Trump chooses U.S. Covid policy critic Bhattacharya to lead NIH
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Dr. Jay Bhattacharya speaks during a roundtable discussion with members of the House Freedom Caucus on the COVID-19 pandemic at The Heritage Foundation on Thursday, November 10, 2022. The NIH has been in the crosshairs of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the NIH. The NIH director oversees 27 institutes and centers that conduct early stage research on everything from vaccines for emerging pandemic threats to targets for new drugs. Bhattacharya, a Stanford health policy professor and doctor, was an outspoken critic of the U.S. government's Covid-19 policies during the pandemic. Francis Collins, the NIH director and Fauci's boss, defended Fauci in a July 2020 interview with STAT News, saying it was "unimaginable" to consider firing Fauci, as some Republicans had demanded.

Elon Musk, whose Starlink satellite constellation is the biggest, wields power in the new Trump administration. SpaceX's Starlink and other mega-constellations of satellites could damage the atmosphere in ways we don't yet understand, scientists say. About 100 scientists signed a letter in October asking the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates satellite launches in the US, to pause mega-constellations. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying 56 Starlink internet satellites launches from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Without an environmental review, it's unclear what the impact of SpaceX's Starlink plans will be.

To look at the short list of names Donald Trump is hoping to appoint to the country’s leading public health roles, it’s easy to see that Covid-19 has remade the country and its ideological arrangements — but perhaps especially the Republican Party. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, is the most conspicuous example — a reflexive anti-establishment agitator who has trafficked in conspiracy theories about the origins of AIDS, 5G and especially the dangers of common vaccines. Kennedy has called the Covid vaccines, which have probably saved more than 20 million lives globally, “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” and as recently as during his own presidential campaign, he suggested that the coronavirus might be an “ethnically targeted” bioweapon that preferentially spared Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. But the others named for top public health posts, though not transparent cranks, are also Covid contrarians whose most important qualification for these positions are their crusades against the public health establishment during the pandemic period: Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health, and Johns Hopkins’s Marty Makary to run the Food and Drug Administration. Dave Weldon, Trump’s pick to oversee the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was a vocal vaccine skeptic long before the pandemic.

Volkswagen said on Wednesday that it was disposing of its stakes in its facilities in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region, exiting an area now known for China’s crackdown on predominantly Muslim ethnic groups there. Volkswagen had a joint venture assembly plant in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, as well as two test tracks in the region, maintaining the largest and most visible presence in Xinjiang of any multinational company. The United States and a growing number of European countries bar imports from Xinjiang because of evidence of forced labor there. The assembly plant did not just become a political liability for VW — it was also a money loser, because it was designed to make gasoline-powered cars. That has left manufacturers like VW, the market leader in China until recently, with considerable unneeded production capacity.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the US Department of Health and Human Services sent a shudder through the global health community. The US is the world’s largest funder of global health programs, according to the nonprofit health policy and research group KFF. Global health is really strategic investment,” del Rio added, saying he hoped Kennedy would find a way to maintain those investments. About half of the nation’s global health budget is spent on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, according to KFF. Worldwide, measles cases rose 20% from 2022 to 2023, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization.

Is bald Reddit the nicest place on the internet?
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( Oscar Holland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The internet isn’t as nice a place as it used to be. Reddit’s r/bald is a 143,000-strong community (comprised mostly of, presumably, bald men) offering advice, support and encouragement to those who’ve taken, or are considering taking, “the plunge” by shaving off their thinning hair. “If there was a top 10 of bald glow ups, you’d be in there somewhere,” reads one of the 13,000 replies. Friends and loved ones may tell us how great we’d look bald but, sadly, we often care more about what strangers (rather than people whose opinions really matter) think of us. There are other ways in which the platform’s design encourages courteous behavior among bald men and beyond.

London CNN —Volkswagen has sold its plant in Xinjiang — a Chinese region beset by accusations of human rights abuses — citing “economic reasons.”“There is no business case for (the plant),” said a spokesperson, noting that it produced combustion engine vehicles until 2019 and, since then, has effectively operated as a distribution center for models produced in other factories. The Volkswagen spokesperson told CNN that SAIC-Volkswagen sold the plant, located in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi, to SMVIC, a subsidiary of Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, but declined to disclose the value of the sale. The sale comes after governments and human rights groups have, for years, accused China of using forced labor and committing other abuses, such as mass detentions, in Xinjiang against the Uyghur Muslim minority group. Volkswagen has faced criticism from rights activists for owning a plant in the region, but it has said there are no signs that forced labor has taken place in the facility. When asked to comment on the FT article, a spokesperson for Volkswagen told CNN that “Volkswagen always adheres to the legal requirements in its communications.

WASHINGTON — A former FBI informant whose false claims about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden were at "the heart" of the Republican impeachment inquiry against the president has now been indicted on tax charges. Alexander Smirnov, the former FBI informant charged with lying to the FBI about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, has now been indicted on 10 separate tax-related charges. The charges against Smirnov, who had been a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010, were brought by David Weiss, the special counsel on the Hunter Biden case, which resulted in convictions on gun charges in June and tax charges in September. Before Smirnov was indicted, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said his claims were "the heart" of Republicans' impeachment inquiry against the president. Prosecutors said Smirnov was "actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials" in Nov. 2023.

The death of a 2-year-old western lowland gorilla at a Canadian zoo earlier this month was found to be the result of human error, the zoo announced. The care team member — intending to separate Eyare from other gorillas for an individual training session — accidentally activated the wrong door, striking the young gorilla, who sustained traumatic head injuries. The zoo said that they immediately launched a formal investigation into Eyare's death and removed the gorilla care team member responsible from the workplace following the incident. That member will be "reassigned to another area of the zoo and will undergo further staff training for that area." The zoo said they are also exploring the idea of transitioning to alternative door and control designs, instead of continuing to use hydraulic doors.

TEL AVIV — The Israeli government failed in its “primary duty to protect its citizens” in the lead-up to and during the Oct. 7, terrorist attacks, according to an Israeli civilian report released Tuesday. Some 1,200 people were killed and 250 taken hostage during the attacks as Hamas fighters infiltrated Israel from southern Gaza and launched thousands of rockets. The Israeli report also identified a "major cause" of the Oct. 7 tragedy as a "glaring failure" by Israeli intelligence branches. Over 18,000 people have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in Mexico’s contentious new selection process, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each of the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Some critics argue that the current justice system, which is riddled with nepotism, corruption and a lack of accountability, needs to be changed.

The United Nations’ mission to Afghanistan said Tuesday that the ruling Taliban had arbitrarily detained journalists 256 times since their takeover three years ago and urged authorities there to protect the media. In a reply accompanying the report, the Taliban-led foreign ministry denied having arrested that number of journalists and added that those arrested had committed a crime. Journalists in Afghanistan worked under “challenging conditions”, the U.N. mission (UNAMA) and the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a statement. It described the U.N. report as being “far from actual realities” and said security forces were working to protect journalists. The foreign ministry said the arrest figure was “exaggerated” and detentions took place subject to law.

SYDNEY, Australia — Google and Facebook-owner Meta Platforms urged the Australian government on Tuesday to delay a bill that will ban most forms of social media for children under 16, saying more time is needed to assess its potential impact. Google and Meta said in their submissions that the government should wait for the results of an age-verification trial before going ahead. The age-verification system may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off. “In its present form, the bill is inconsistent and ineffective.”The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or children, to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. ByteDance’s TikTok said the bill lacked clarity and that it had “significant concerns” with the government’s plan to pass the bill without detailed consultation with experts, social media platforms, mental health organizations and young people.

Human remains were found submerged in a Georgia pond inside a vehicle similar to the one that belonged to a New York Couple who disappeared in 1980, authorities announced. One human bone was discovered in the submerged Lincoln Continental on Friday, according to a Saturday statement from the Glynn County Police Department. “The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle that Charles and Catherine Romer were believed to be driving when reported missing in April, 1980,” the police department said in a Facebook post. Law enforcement back then expressed concerns about potential foul play against the couple from Scarsdale, New York, partly because Catherine Romer was wearing about $81,000 worth of jewelry. The pond was being drained, police said, to determine if there are additional remains.

CNN —Millions more senior citizens and lower-income Americans could obtain coverage for costly anti-obesity drugs under a proposal being unveiled Tuesday by the Biden administration. Some Medicare enrollees could see their out-of-pocket costs drop by as much as 95%. The incoming Trump administration may not view expanding coverage of anti-obesity drugs as favorably. About 3.6 million Medicare enrollees with cardiovascular disease could be newly eligible for Wegovy, according to a KFF analysis released in April. At the heart of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat on Monday to slap China with new tariffs is a bitterly recurring issue: the flow into the United States of the potent opioid fentanyl, created using chemicals made in China. In September, Chinese officials expanded the list of so-called precursor chemicals used in making the drug, imposing more oversight. It was a rare instance of cooperation from China, which has otherwise stonewalled the United States on issues including nuclear arms control, support for Russia and human rights. China is the main source of chemicals used to make fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that kills tens of thousands of Americans a year. Much of the flow into the United States is from drug cartels in Mexico who mix the precursors and smuggle the finished product across the border.

The weeks heading into year-end often mark a bullish time for stocks, and smaller companies especially might be poised for outperformance. With that in mind, Jeffrey Hirsch, editor-in-chief of the Stock Trader's Almanac, believes investors should buy small caps from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving this year and hold them until Jan. 3rd, 2025. The tendency for small caps to outperform large caps from mid-December through January, combined with the so-called Santa Claus rally right around Christmas, can bolster small-cap growth stocks, Hirsch said. That rally "rhymes with the post-2016 election move," according to John Hancock Investment Management co-chief investment strategist Emily Roland. He's really focused more on the food companies, eating healthier, vaccine companies and just making sure they're held to the same standards."
