SHANGHAI — ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is China’s richest person, with personal wealth of $49.3 billion, an annual rich list showed Tuesday, although counterparts in real estate and renewables have fared less well. Zhang, 41, who stepped down in 2021 as chief executive of ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, becomes the 18th individual to be crowned China’s richest person in the 26 years since the Hurun China Rich List was first published. He overtook bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan, who slipped to second place as his fortune dropped 24%, to $47.9 billion. Despite a legal battle over its U.S. assets, ByteDance’s global revenue grew 30% last year to $110 billion, Hurun said, helping to propel Zhang’s personal fortune. The number of billionaires on the list dropped by 142 to 753, shrinking more than a third from its 2021 peak.

ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming for the first time has emerged as China's richest person, according to a list compiled by Hurun Research Institute, leaving behind Nongfu Spring Chairperson Zhong Shanshan who has topped the rankings for three years. Midea founder He Xiangjian and CATL's CEO Zeng Yuqun took fifth and sixth places on the list. "The Hurun China Rich List has shrunk for an unprecedented third year running, as China's economy and stock markets had a difficult year," said Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun report chairman and chief researcher. The current rich list predominantly comprises entrepreneurs from the technology, consumer electronics and new energy space, from what used to be dominated by real estate developers, Hoogewerf noted. "The stories of the individuals on the Hurun China Rich List tell the story of the Chinese economy," he said.

Huang, 33, writes spicy romance novels, many featuring billionaire love interests, like Alex Volkov in "Twisted Love" or Dante Russo in "King of Wrath." Huang also said she worked with alpha readers who read portions of her novel as it was in progress and provided feedback. She told BI that alpha readers are particularly popular with self-published authors, though traditionally published writers could benefit from them, too. Huang has a "core group" of alpha readers who have been reviewing drafts of her books since mid-2021 or early 2022. Nvidia could be positioned for even more growth ahead, according to Bank of America. Analyst Vivek Arya reiterated his buy rating on the chip giant and raised his price target by $25 to $190. That would add to the monstrous rally it has already seen this year, with shares surging more than 176% in 2024. To be sure, a Bloomberg report earlier Tuesday that the U.S. government was considering a cap on AI chip exports to certain Persian Gulf nations may also have dampened industry sentiment. Investors are sensitive to any updates on AI chip demand, given the dramatic rise in the stocks of Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and others over the past two years. Bottom line Artificial intelligence is alive and well, according to TSMC, which has emerged as the most valuable window into AI demand other than Nvidia itself. With Big Tech earnings in the coming weeks, it's particularly nice to see the AI chip trade stabilize after the ASML debacle. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said some investors are missing market opportunities because they are too focused on what the Federal Reserve will do next when it comes to interest rates. "I'm not saying the stock market will never go down when the Fed's easing," he said. But Blackstone reported an impressive quarter, and the stock reached a new all-time high, up more than 6% by the close. He also referenced the turbulence this week in the semiconductor space — triggered by a bad quarter from Dutch chipmaker ASML on Tuesday — saying investors' Fed worries may have scared them out of expensive stocks. "Everyone who's obsessed with the Fed's next foray is basically investing with blinders on, and as a result, they're missing out on some of the greatest moves I've ever seen in my life," Cramer said.
