The committee is investigating Shein over concerns that Uyghur forced labor is being used in its supply chain and has gone undetected because of the de minimis provision. The committee has not yet drawn conclusions about forced labor in Shein's supply chain. When asked about claims of forced labor in Shein's supply chain, Claure told CNBC he doesn't "believe those allegations are correct." However, forced labor can still show up in other parts of the supply chain, said Chloe Cranston, the head of thematic advocacy programmes at Anti-Slavery International. In 2022, 11% of audits turned up "zero tolerance violations," including child labor, forced labor and wage violations, and 28 suppliers were terminated as a result, according to the company.

The report reflects the uneasy state of new construction, with builders facing the strain of high mortgage rates and increased costs for building materials. “To keep buyers interested, many builders have been offering upgrades or buying down mortgage rates, but rising home prices coupled with mortgage rates approaching 8% means there will be fewer buyers in the market to entice,” Bright MLS Chief Economist Lisa Sturtevant said. It is the week’s second report on the state of the new housing market. On Tuesday, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index revealed that builder confidence fell for the third consecutive month in October. "Today’s September housing starts report reflects the fragility of the real estate market,” said Travis Hodges, managing director at insurance broker VIU by HUB.

(AP) — Arkansas lawmakers on Thursday voted to audit the purchase of a $19,000 lectern for Gov. The Republican Party of Arkansas reimbursed the state for the purchase on Sept. 14, and Sanders’ office has called the use of a state credit card for the lectern an accounting error. Sanders’ office said it received the lectern in August. Sanders’ office has not said what features contributed to the lectern’s seemingly high cost. The lectern's purchase was uncovered by Matthew Campbell, a blogger and attorney who has sued Arkansas State Police and claimed the agency withheld documents about Sanders' security and travel.

Russia is likely moving naval operations away from Crimea amid Ukrainian attacks, UK intel said. Russian naval aviation is attempting to assert Russian dominance over the Black Sea, the MOD added. AdvertisementAdvertisementA UK intelligence assessment said that some of Russia's naval operations in the Black Sea have been relocated following recent Ukraine attacks on its Crimean base. The UK's Ministry of Defence said on Monday that the threats had likely pushed some of Russia's Black Sea fleet activities to move to the port of Novorossiysk, on Russia's western coast. Russia abandoned Snake Island, in the northwestern Black Sea, early in its full-scale invasion, but has continued with attacks on it.

A key Russian submarine suffered "catastrophic" damage in a recent Ukrainian attack, UK intel said. The loss is significant, the MOD said, as it's one of four cruise-missile-capable subs in Russia's Black Sea Fleet. It could take "many years" before the submarine can return to service, the UK MOD said. The UK MOD added that "the complex task of removing the wreckage from the dry docks" will also place the facility out of use for many months. "The demilitarization of the Russian Black Sea fleet is a real long-term guarantee of security for regional trade routes and the "grain corridor," he added.

The US may send the Army Tactical Missile System to Ukraine, two officials told ABC News. The US has long been reluctant to send ATACMS, also known as the Army Tactical Missile System. Ben Hodges, a retired US general, previously told Insider that ATACMS would allow Ukraine to reach targets beyond Russia's defensive line and destroy headquarters and logistics sites. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long argued that his forces need the ATACMS to fight Russia. The US has resisted granting ATACMS to Ukraine, worrying that Russia's President Vladimir Putin could escalate the conflict.

The US is leaning towards sending Ukraine the ATACMS long-range missile, per a new report. ATACMS — a shortening of Army Tactical Missile System — has been one of Ukraine's most pressing requests, because its long range would open up Russian targets too distant to easily attack. The ATACMS is a long-range guided missile with a range of around 300 kilometers, or 190 miles, per its manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The "ATACMS' pinpoint accuracy helps minimize collateral damage," Jim Gribschaw, a director at Lockheed Martin said of the missile. Being an aging nation also means becoming a nation of caregivers, one that requires a new system of support. For most older Americans, care will come from unpaid family members or friends, who contributed around $600 billion worth of free labor to the economy in 2021, according to AARP. Drone attacks on airfields in Russia are likely forcing it to reshape its air defense, UK intel said. Airfields and other locations deep within Russian territory have been pummeled in multiple strikes by exploding drone attacks in recent weeks — with one flurry, on the night of August 29, striking five separate locations. In August alone 25 places in Russia came under drone attack, the UK MOD said, even penetrating the defenses around Moscow. "Russia will have to consider the addition of further air defence systems to airfields that it considers to be at risk from UAV attacks," the UK MoD said. Russia has blamed the attacks on Ukraine, which generally doesn't claim responsibility for attacks on Russian soil.

Videos of an apparent artillery ambush have emerged and show Russian forces taking heavy hits. A retired US Army general said Russians were making "opening day mistakes" 18 months into the war. Russian forces have made similar mistakes repeatedly in the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces, of course, are not infallible, and mistakes have jeopardized operations, including the opening phase of the ongoing counteroffensive, according to experts who visited areas near the front.
