Pennsylvania Battle Re-Enactors Up in Arms Over Fighting Ban

A new rule in Pennsylvania that will require re-enactors of a 1763 battle to lay down their weapons is drawing fire from a local historical society, the latest skirmish in the re-enactment world, which has been diminishing as hobbyists get older and sensitivities about restaging historical events have grown. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission said last month that it will no longer permit re-enactments on the 23 sites it owns in the state that involve the exchange of fire from weapons, the taking of casualties and hand-to-hand combat, “or any other form of simulated warfare or violence between opposing forces.” The commission said it made the change to align with National Park Service policy.
In exchange for as little as a few thousand dollars in contributions to the nonprofit, these people received easy access to events where Supreme Court justices would be. Supreme Court Historical society trustee Jay Sekulow, center, represented President Trump during the latter's impeachment trial in 2020. Anti-abortion advocates cheer in front of the Supreme Court after the decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores was announced in 2014. Alito did not respond to a request for comment on his involvement in the Supreme Court Historical Society. Supreme Court justices, though, aren't even required to stay within those weak guardrails because no code of ethics governs justices' behavior.
New York‘Tell me what you eat,” the 18th-century French lawyer and gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin famously said, “and I will tell you who you are.” “‘I’ll Have What She’s Having’: The Jewish Deli,” the terrific exhibit that opened last month at the New-York Historical Society, makes a credible case for an alternative view: “Tell me who you are, and I will tell you what you eat.”
How an arcane 96-year-old law stopped the rail strike

The Railway Labor Act was passed in 1926 as one of the very first labor laws in the nation. Because of the law, the House was able to vote Wednesday to impose unpopular contracts on four rail unions whose members have already rejected the terms, followed by a vote by the Senate vote late Thursday that did the same. The Railway Labor Act, passed in 1926, is the reason Congress could intervene this week to block a strike by freight railroad unions. But under the Railway Labor Act, management can fall back on hopes that Congress will give them the deal it wants. When he served in the Senate, Biden voted against an earlier effort to impose a contract on the rail unions to keep them on the job.
Conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Saturday strenuously denied any involvement in leaking the outcome of a 2014 ruling in a lengthy statement issued in response to a New York Times report. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority that strongly favors religious rights and frequently rules in favor of conservative Christian interests. Gayle Wright told the Times she did not obtain or pass along any information to Schenck, who has since become a supporter of abortion rights. Chief Justice John Roberts announced in May that he had launched an investigation of the leak but there has been no update since. Meanwhile, liberal members of the court have suggested that the court risks undermining its legitimacy by abruptly unraveling decades of precedent.
A view of the U.S. Supreme Court building on the first day of the court's new term in Washington, U.S. October 3, 2022. Schenck said the ruling was also shared with a handful of advocates, according to the report. The Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision was a victory for conservatives, much like the Supreme Court's recent 5-4 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the historic ruling that established the constitutional right to abortion in the U.S. in 1973. In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the court ruled that it was a violation of religious freedom for family-owned businesses to be required to pay for insurance that covers contraception. Representatives for the Supreme Court and Chief Justice John Roberts didn't immediately comment.
WASHINGTON, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A New York Times report of a former anti-abortion leader's claim that he was told in advance about the outcome of a major 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case involving contraceptives triggered calls on Saturday for an investigation of a court still reeling from the leak of a landmark abortion rights ruling. Rob Schenck was quoted by The Times as saying he was informed weeks before the public announcement of the 2014 ruling shortly after two conservative allies had dinner at the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and his wife. Alito said in a statement that any allegation that he or his wife leaked the 2014 decision was "completely false." Alito had called the Roe leak, which was confirmed when the ruling was announced in June, a "grave betrayal." Schenck said one of the Wrights then told him that Alito had authored the Hobby Lobby opinion and that it would be in its favor, The Times said.
Jell-O GirlEarly Jell-O advertising depicted women as inept, needing the help of a simple recipe like Jell-O. Jell-O released flavors such as seasoned tomato, celery, mixed vegetable and Italian salad, and Jell-O salads were a colorful way to use leftovers in side dishes. In 1955, the company introduced the slogan “A Jell-O salad makes the meal.”“The Jell-O salad really hits the American sensibility and palate perfectly. Constance Bannister Corp/Getty ImagesBut as more Americans traveled and global cuisines entered the mainstream, the simplicity of Jell-O salads became a downside. “Upscale becomes the new mainstream and Jell-O salads moves into a niche,” Shapiro said.

A demon cat is said to appear near the grounds of the US Capitol, the White House Historical Association says. Long considered a prophecy of coming tragedy, the first reported sighting of the demon cat was in the United States Capitol in 1862, during the Civil War. From then on, it was seen in the Capitol building basement before national emergencies, according to the White House Historical Association. "I can put enough pieces together to know where the legend came from," Livengood told Atlas Obscura. The White House Historical Association did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Divers recovered a 3,000-year-old dugout canoe last week from Lake Mendota in Madison, Wis., marking the latest such find for a Wisconsin Historical Society archaeologist, who discovered a roughly 1,000-year-old vessel in the same lake last year. A 3,000-year-old Native American canoe recently pulled out of a Wisconsin lake is helping historians draw a firmer link between the Ho-Chunk Nation and the Great Lakes region. The vessel, recovered from Lake Mendota in Madison last week, was carbon dated to 1,000 B.C., which surprised even the historians at the Wisconsin Historical Society. It is the oldest canoe ever found in the region, according to the historical society.

A payments system without cash is one dependent on banks that are prone to financial crises, systems failure, and cyberattacks. The digital chips promise you government-issued dollar bills, and that promise is empty if you can't get those from the ATM. Despite how crucial it is to maintain an inclusive, multimodal payments system with nonbank and non-digital options, our payments system is being driven toward a monoculture. Ads for digital payments don't say, "Enjoy the speed, convenience, surveillance, cyber-hacking, exclusion, and critical infrastructure weaknesses that our platform brings," yet that is what lies beneath the surface-level slickness of digital payments. The world's most vulnerable people rely on the already existing, physical cash system, and our priority should be to protect that system.
