Trajal Harrell’s Dance Card Is Full
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Laura Cappelle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Harrell’s imagination was shaped, he said, by his “very idyllic Southern upbringing” in Douglas, as part of a well-to-do Black family. He came of age in the ’50s, and managed to buy land,” Harrell said. My grandparents were always using metaphors, like: ‘There’s more than one way to skin a cat.’”The academically gifted Harrell was pushed to be ambitious by his college-educated parents. After years as a freelance choreographer, in 2019, Harrell was invited to form a permanent dance company at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, one of the German-speaking world’s most high-profile theaters. What if there had been like a community of people to support her?,” said Harrell, who studied with the feminist thinker bell hooks at Yale.

A Falcon 9 rocket is displayed outside the Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) headquarters on January 28, 2021 in Hawthorne, California. The U.S. Department of Justice sued SpaceX on Thursday, alleging Elon Musk's space company discriminated against refugees and asylum seekers in its hiring practices. The lawsuit says between 2018 and 2022, SpaceX "wrongly claimed" that export control laws limited its hiring to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. The DOJ has been investigating SpaceX since June 2020, when the department's Immigrant and Employee Rights Section received a complaint of employment discrimination from a non-U.S. citizen. Fabian Hutter, whose complaint about SpaceX led the DOJ to open its discrimination probe, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC.

The U.S. Department of Justice sued SpaceX on Thursday, alleging Elon Musk's space company discriminated in its hiring practices against refugees and people granted asylum in the U.S. The lawsuit says between 2018 and 2022, SpaceX "wrongly claimed" that export control laws limited its hiring to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Clarke added that the DOJ's investigation found "SpaceX recruiters and high-level officials took actions that actively discouraged asylees and refugees from seeking work opportunities at the company." That lone hire came about four months after the DOJ notified SpaceX of its investigation. Read the DOJ's lawsuit below:

Chinese arms sales in the Middle East have increased by 80% over the past decade, a result of Beijing's expanding relationships there and its willingness to deliver arms faster and with fewer stipulations than Washington. FAYEZ NURELDINE/AFP via Getty ImagesMiddle Eastern countries, led by the Arab Gulf states, have for decades been major buyers of US-made weapons. Chinese arms sales to the region are "substantial and expected to continue to increase," said Ahmed Aboudouh, an associate fellow at Chatham House. "But it's just one factor among many, including varying threat perceptions of Iran among the Arab Gulf states as well as varying levels of trust between the Arab Gulf governments themselves." It has been a hundred years since D.H. Lawrence published “Studies in Classic American Literature,” and in the annals of literary criticism the book may still claim the widest discrepancy between title and content. Not with respect to subject matter: As advertised, this compact volume consists of essays on canonical American authors of the 18th and 19th centuries — a familiar gathering of dead white men. Some (Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman) are still household names more than a century later, while others (Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, Richard Henry Dana Jr.) have faded into relative obscurity. My point is that nobody ever read them like Lawrence did — as madly, as wildly or as insightfully. “Studies in Classic American Literature” is as dull a phrase as any committee of professors could devise.

Courtesy of Jacob OrthOrth's video looks roughly similar to early renderings of autonomous pods that The Boring Company shared in 2018. Actually, the reason we curate the shows ourselves is not because we want to control how people think, but quite the opposite. I do not have any political reasons why I would want the show this way, or that way. I think it’s important that people get a totally different idea on what we are working on. It has a focus on health care, because that is something in our work that has never really been presented. We have done three other hospitals based on its success, in terms of how doctors, how patients, speak about it.

REUTERS/Alexandria Sage/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - California state air regulators and truck and engine manufacturers said on Thursday they had reached an agreement on state emissions rules that will give companies more flexibility to meet requirements. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said the "Clean Truck Partnership" with the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) includes new flexibility for manufacturers to meet emissions requirements while reaching state goals for reducing emissions. Newsom said "today truck manufacturers join our urgent efforts to slash air pollution, showing the rest of the country that we can both cut dangerous pollution and build the economy of the future." California said Thursday it agreed to modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations for which manufacturers will provide offsets to maintain California emission targets.

Silicon Valley is bracing for what it fears will be an "extinction event" threatening the survival of hundreds of startups. Tom Loverro, a investor at 40-year-old Bay Area venture capital firm IVP, has been loudly warning for months on Twitter and in media interviews about a coming "mass extinction event" for startups. The total volume of venture capital investment into US startups has slumped for six consecutive quarters, according to data firm Pitchbook. Even a last-ditch slashing of the startup's prospective valuation — a "down-round," in Silicon Valley parlance — didn't whet investors' appetites. Over the past year, many startups that rely on Silicon Valley funding have been steeling themselves for the slowdown to avoid similar fates.

CNN —Jennifer Lawrence is setting the record straight about speculation she and Liam Hemsworth had a “secret fling” while he was with Miley Cyrus. Here’s the backstory: Lawrence costarred with Hemsworth in the “Hunger Games” franchise in which their characters, Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen and Hemsworth’s Gale Hawthorne, were romantically involved. When Cyrus released her song “Flowers” earlier this year, many of her fans believed the lyrics were about her split from Hemsworth. Given that the franchise released between 2012 to 2015, there was speculation that Cyrus was suggesting Hemsworth had been unfaithful to her with Lawrence. During a recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Lawrence was asked if the music video was “referencing a secret fling” she had with Hemsworth.

But Washington has proved to be wary of selling those countries US-made stealth fighter jets. That leaves the Gulf states with various non-US options, which don't look all that promising — at least not any time soon. Signage is displayed outside a permanently closed Bed Bath & Beyond retail store in Hawthorne, California, on May 1, 2023. Bed Bath & Beyond will live on in name only after Overstock.com won an auction for the failed home goods retailer's intellectual property and digital assets, according to court records filed early Thursday. In a rare move, Bed Bath chose to run a separate sale process for its Buy Buy Baby chain, considered the crown jewel of its assets. Buy Buy Baby assets garnered interest from buyers even before Bed Bath filed for bankruptcy in April. The auction for Buy Buy Baby's assets is slated to take place on Wednesday.

Why Do We Brand the Summer?

Feral Girl Summer is over and Married Girl Summer has arrived. Summer is coming, and with it the yearly onslaught of attempts to label a season that has not yet happened. Welcome to your Amy March Girl Summer. Many of these declarations are not meant to be taken seriously, and plenty will not succeed (see: Hot Vax Summer and, less consequentially, The New York Times’s endorsement of the Dirty Shirley). “No summer ever came back, and no two summers ever were alike,” wrote Nathaniel Hawthorne, who died 155 years before he would have been able to listen to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer.”

A journalist argues that Musk could use The Boring Company to make public transportation cheaper. This includes solving traffic by moving transportation underground through car tunnels or building a successful hyperloop. And Musk has often been explicit that traditional public transportation options, like subways, would not be a part of his vision. The Boring Company has also put its controversial hyperloop plans to the side. The Boring Company did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Randy Korgan, director of the Teamsters' Amazon division, said the union is "coordinating nationwide" with Amazon workers. So far, only one Amazon warehouse in the U.S. has voted to join a union. She told Insider she trained the NASA astronauts for SpaceX's first crewed mission to the ISS. I've been passionate about sending humans into space since I was eight years old, so becoming a mission operations engineer at SpaceX in 2009 was a lifetime achievement for me. Out of the 20 employees in the mission operations team, I was the only trainer. NASA selected SpaceX as one of the partners for the program, and six years later, SpaceX sent its first crewed mission to the ISS. Two NASA astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, launched on the Crew Dragon spaceship — and I had the privilege of training them for the flight.

Companies that do secure human-testing approval typically conduct at least two rounds of trials before applying for FDA approval to commercially market a device. "Everybody in the industry was saying: 'Oh my God, they're going to run straight into a brick wall,'" Ludwig said of Musk's bid for FDA approval. For example, NeuroPace, which makes the brain implant to treat epilepsy, received final FDA approval in 2013 – 16 years after the company's launch. Beyond grants, it provides access to government experts who advise on how to gain FDA approval and commercialize a device. Musk's emails to Neuralink staffers often come from his SpaceX address, said two people who reviewed them.
