Haiti clearly holds a place in the heart of Ohio’s Republican Gov. He’s been to the country at least 25 times with his wife, he said at a news conference Monday in Springfield. He respects the Haitians who have come to the US legally and found work in Springfield. Further, DeWine said the Haitians found Springfield because business owners there were having trouble finding workers after the Covid-19 pandemic. Like DeWine, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has also tried very hard to correct the record on the role Haitians are playing in Springfield.

The Haitian Times, an online publication, has covered Haiti and the Haitian diaspora around the world since it was founded in 1999. Springfield, Ohio, was already on the Haitian Times’ radar well before the conspiracy theories began. The Haitian Times covered the comments aggressively — describing them as racist and false. The day after the debate, The Haitian Times published an article reporting that Haitian immigrant families in Ohio were “under attack” amid the intense swirl of false claims. Springfield’s city manager told the publication that it could not guarantee the safety of its staff, Haitian Times founder Garry Pierre-Pierre told CNN.

At least 33 bomb threats have been made in Springfield, Ohio, since false claims — which were pushed by former President Donald Trump and his running mate — surfaced about Haitian migrants eating people’s pets, the governor said. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” Trump said at the debate. Haitian migrants have been granted Temporary Protected Status by the U.S. government because of unrest in Haiti, including violent gangs ruling the streets.

Read previewAround 200,000 Haitians living in the US are on Temporary Protected Status, including many of those living in Springfield, Ohio, who have been targeted by former President Donald Trump and others with baseless claims about eating pets. Trump has already called for mass deportations from the town, saying last week: "We're going to start with Springfield and Aurora." "Once a country is designated, each individual covered by the designation must apply separately for TPS status," she said, noting that existing TPS holders must also renew their paperwork with each redesignation. However, if Trump wins, Leblang told BI this is far less likely. Indeed, it already was once before when Trump sought to end TPS for certain countries during his last administration.

Mike DeWine on Sunday decried former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating dogs and other pets as "garbage," but stopped short of directly condemning the former president and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for spreading the false claims. There’s no evidence of this at all,” DeWine said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” when asked whether it’s responsible for Trump to push those false claims. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has slammed the false claims and urged the public, especially prominent public figures, against amplifying them further. “Springfield is a beautiful community, and your pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio,” Rue told MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” last week. We don’t need this misinformation.”Vance on Sunday pushed back on claims that the fringe online conspiracy of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets is false, claiming that he has heard concerns from constituents on the matter.

CNN —Donald Trump wanted to spend this week attacking one of Democratic rival Kamala Harris’ biggest political vulnerabilities. The promotion of the claims overshadowed a series of speeches aimed at the economy and blaming Harris for border security failures. However, during Tuesday’s debate, Trump’s attacks on Harris over immigration veered into the outrageous, as he falsely claimed that migrants are eating dogs and cats in Springfield. Democratic National Committee rapid response director Alex Floyd on Friday highlighted Trump’s relationship with Loomer and other controversial allies. During Tuesday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump repeated unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants “are eating dogs and cats … eating people’s pets” in Springfield, Ohio. “The fact that Donald Trump wants to double down on something so ridiculous just breaks my heart again,” Smith said. The rumor follows years of insults hurled at Haitians and Haitian Americans, including unfounded claims of cannibalism, and Trump’s hostility toward Haitian immigrants during his administration. “I work every day with Haitian immigrants, and no one works as hard as them,” he said. “It’s really unreal.”On social media, Haitians have expressed disgust about the depiction, while others “won’t even entertain something so crazy,” Smith said.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio town at the center of a culture war over debunked claims about Haitian migrants was forced to close its City Hall on Thursday after receiving a bomb threat, the city announced on its website and social media channels. The bomb threat "was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield,” the city said. The city’s mayor, Rob Rue, indicated Thursday that the threat included complaints about Haitian migrants in the city, according to the Springfield News-Sun. Springfield has recently been thrust into the national political culture war as conservative influencers and Republican politicians have repeated a debunked claim that immigrants from Haiti have been stealing and eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats," he said.

Former President Donald Trump, during Tuesday’s presidential debate, pushed the baseless claim about Haitian immigrants in Ohio eating dogs and other pets. "They're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats," Trump said during an answer to a question about immigration. "They're eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame." Baseless rumors have spread on social media for days claiming that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are abducting and eating pets. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue repeated Tuesday that the city had no documented cases of immigrants eating pets.

The White House warned Tuesday that debunked claims about Haitian immigrants harming household pets could spill over into anti-immigrant violence, as Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance vowed to keep spreading the rumor. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in a briefing with reporters that the false claims about immigrants were a “dangerous” variety of conspiracy theory. So, it needs to stop.”The rumor that Haitian immigrants are abducting and eating pets has spread widely on social media and has focused on Springfield, Ohio, a city with a large population of recent immigrants. The baseless claims have been described as racist because of the implication that Haitian immigrants, most of whom are Black, have barbaric practices or are incapable of living peacefully among white neighbors. Vance posted Tuesday on X that “a child was murdered by a Haitian migrant” and he said other local resources including health care and housing were becoming overwhelmed by demand from new arrivals.

Police in Springfield, Ohio, said Monday they had received no credible reports of immigrants harming pets, contradicting a claim by Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance. They added that they had no information to support similar assertions about immigrants squatting or disrupting traffic. There is a long history of conservative politicians and pundits denigrating Haitian immigrants in particular, including with baseless allegations of cannibalism, according to historians who have studied the former French colony. “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us,” Cruz wrote on X, as a caption on a photo of cats. “Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program,” the website says, referring to a federal humanitarian program for migrants.

For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. In the predawn hours on a Sunday in late July, members of one of Haiti’s largest armed gangs attacked the town of Ganthier, about 25 miles east of the capital and on a road that the authorities say is used to smuggle weapons. When police reinforcements arrived in armored vehicles hours later, officers found the streets deserted, the gang members having left after destroying Ganthier’s police station and torturing and killing several residents, according to the town’s mayor and the police. “The whole town of Ganthier is emptied; there is no one left,” the mayor, Jean Vilonor Victor, told The New York Times. Weeks after the arrival of a United Nations-backed international security force in Haiti, the gangs who have brought the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other regions in the country to their knees show no signs of letting up.
