His fate will not only depend on whether sufficient Republican senators will defer to the president-elect. That dilemma is especially acute since concern among Republican senators helped derail the Gaetz selection last month. So far, only a small minority of Republican senators have raised questions about Hegseth. But several Republican senators said they hoped such steps would be taken, especially in the case of Hegseth. CNN’s Manu Raju asked North Dakota Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer whether standards had changed since those days.

Chad Chronister, President-elect Donald Trump's selection to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration, said Tuesday that he would withdraw from consideration for the post. "Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration." Trump had tapped Chronister to be DEA administrator, a role within the Department of Justice that requires Senate confirmation, over the weekend. While Scott called Chronister an "incredible pick," some Republicans bristled at his selection for the top DEA role and welcomed his withdrawal. In November, Gaetz, R-Fla. withdrew his name from consideration to serve as attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations, which he denied.

In today’s edition, national political correspondent explains why Republicans may not be able to bank on Donald Trump's coalition moving forward. The GOP’s post-election challenge: Turning Trump voters into full-fledged RepublicansBy Steve KornackiEven with their success, this election revealed a challenge for Republicans going forward: The “Trump coalition” and the “GOP coalition” are not quite the same. That was in Maine in 2020, when voters re-elected Republican Sen. Susan Collins while backing Democrat Joe Biden for president. The first involves voters who were motivated to turn out for Trump, but then skipped all of the other races on the ballot. The other factor the GOP will need to address involves Democratic defectors — traditionally Democratic voters who have essentially made an exception for Trump.

The 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s will be deposed Wednesday after a judge ruled he was competent to be questioned about the allegations. They alleged that their coaches and trainers were aware that Bomba was subjecting basketball players to unnecessary prostate examinations and did nothing to stop him. Indiana University is represented by the Indianapolis-based Barnes & Thornburg law firm, university spokesperson Mark Bode wrote in an email. Bomba had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. The accusations that the university turned a blind eye to allegations that a team doctor was sexually abusing players echo a scandal involving a team doctor at a rival school.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Defense Department, Pete Hegseth, is in peril as Senate Republicans grow increasingly concerned over allegations of drinking and reports about his treatment of women. Given Republicans' slim Senate majority in the next Congress, Hegseth, a former Fox News host, can afford to lose only three GOP votes, assuming all Democrats vote against him. Hegseth did not respond when he was asked for comment on those allegations Tuesday evening at the Capitol. Another Trump pick to fill out his Cabinet dropped out of contention last month amid opposition from Senate Republicans. Several Republican senators have continued to downplay the allegations, saying they support Trump’s prerogative to pick his own Cabinet.

An 8-year-old boy has died after a statue fell on him outside the luxury Arizona Biltmore hotel, the Phoenix Police Department said. The boy's death was announced Monday, five days after he was struck in the head by the statue and hospitalized. Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday why the statue came apart and how the boy came to be hit by it, but they ruled out foul play, police said. The Biltmore hotel, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is part of a 39-acre resort spanning the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with views of palm trees and mountain ranges. The statue that collapsed was one of 19 "solemn sprites" sculptures on the grounds of the resort, KVOA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tuscon, Arizona, reported.

Donald Trump could use Joe Biden’s pardon of Hunter Biden for his own gain, some worry. When the Pittsburgh Steelers made the midseason decision to switch starting quarterbacks, the move wasn’t exactly celebrated. Releasing Wilson cost the Broncos $85 million combined against their salary cap this season and next — the biggest cap penalty ever. The Broncos still had to pay Wilson $39 million this year after they cut him, minus whatever salary he made if he signed with another team. That allowed Pittsburgh to scoop him for a bargain one-year, $1.21 million contract, with Wilson getting $37.79 million more from the Broncos. After having averaged 20.7 points per game with Fields, Pittsburgh is scoring 28.7 with Wilson.

In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise.
