A study published Monday in the journal JAMA Network Open found that a higher daily step count is associated with fewer depressive symptoms. And taking more steps isn’t the only move you can make toward better mental health, Choi said. “Step count is a nice proxy for physical activity, which has been consistently shown to have beneficial effects on depression risk,” she added.

It is only the sixth time that a no confidence vote has been called in the country of 83 million people, Europe's most populous and the continent's largest economy. The confidence vote was needed because in post-World War II Germany, the constitution does not allow the Bundestag to dissolve itself. Scholz called the confidence vote after weeks of infighting with his coalition partners on a 2025 budget and Germany's future economic policy prior to Lindner's firing. However, it is unlikely the group would be able to govern because other parties have refused to align themselves to the far-right, despite Germany’s parliamentary system traditionally producing coalitions. Facing pressure from both the right and the left, French Prime Minister Michel Barnier resigned earlier this month after he lost a confidence vote which collapsed his government.

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers urged President Joe Biden in a letter Monday to commute the sentences of people who are affected by disparities in sentences for offenses involving crack and powder cocaine. The move effectively closed the disparity in federal sentencing between the two forms of the drug. Lawmakers, though, are urging Biden to use clemency powers to commute sentences of people affected by the sentencing disparity before Garland’s guidance. Sentencing Commission argued "reduced the disparity between crack and powder cocaine sentences, reduced the federal prison population, and appears to have resulted in fewer federal prosecutions for crack cocaine." The bill, which was re-introduced last year after the 2021 legislation stalled in the Senate, would end the cocaine disparity.

Now, freeze-dried mouse sperm, stored aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in a radiation protection box, could help give us a better understanding of mammals’ ability to procreate off Earth. In 1997, he and another academic developed a novel method that they used to clone the world’s first mouse from adult cells. And he and his team pioneered a freeze-drying method used to send mouse sperm to the ISS, where it was stored in a freezer for up to six years. From that study, they determined that freeze-dried sperm could stay viable for 200 years in space. When it comes to mice, the freeze-dried mouse sperm Wakayama is currently storing aboard the ISS will return to Earth in 2025 for study.

With weeks to go before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, the Biden administration is still taking steps to deliver sweeping student loan forgiveness to millions of Americans. The U.S. Department of Education has submitted its so-called "Plan B" for student loan cancellation to the Office of Management and Budget for review. "OMB review is the last step" before the policy is published in the Federal Register, said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Once the rule is published, the Education Department could begin reducing or eliminating people's loans, Kantrowitz said. "The Biden administration continues to seek student debt relief even in the waning days of his tenure as president," Kantrowitz said.
