Barclays has identified a list of global stocks poised to benefit as central banks in Europe and the U.K. prepare to cut interest rates. The European Central Bank and the Bank of England are expected to continue, or begin, reducing interest rates in the second half of this year, continuing into 2025. Barclays economists project that by mid-2025, the ECB's key rate could reach 2.5%, while the Bank of England's rate might settle at 4%. Barclays included the following stocks in its "rate-cut winners basket", among which are: Cellnex Telecom, Royal KPN , Hermes , Zalando , and Siemens Healthineers . While banks are often thought to suffer from lower interest rates, Barclays suggests that any loss in earnings from lower rates could be partially offset by higher lending volumes and reduced provisions for bad loans.

CNN —A fossilized mammoth skull, centuries-old ceramics and Banksy’s famous self-shredding painting are among hundreds of high-value collectibles on show at Sotheby’s ambitious new retail outpost in Hong Kong. With younger collectors seemingly in mind, items on the first floor range in price from 5,000 to 50 million Hong Kong dollars ($640 to $6.4 million). The venture is the latest signal that major auction houses still consider Hong Kong to be their long-term hub in Asia. In June, Hermès also unveiled its expanded retail space in the neighborhood. It has simultaneously sought to grow its footprint in Hong Kong — not only with its newly unveiled Maison, but also a nearby 36,000-square-foot regional headquarters, due to open later this year.

London CNN —The value of some of the world’s best-known luxury companies is plunging as Chinese consumers pull back on spending, with even the most exclusive brands feeling the pain. The rout seems to be accelerating, with those sales tumbling 14% in the second quarter, according to results published late Tuesday. “For now, the (luxury) market remains volatile as investors reassess the once-held belief that luxury brands are a safe-haven investment, shielded from broader economic downturns,” Jochen Stanzl, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, told CNN. “The Chinese market contracted slightly; the market situation in the premium and luxury segment in China remained weak,” the company said. China’s economy grew 4.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of the year, according to official data released last week, missing economists’ expectations and marking the weakest growth since the first quarter of 2023.

But most of Hermès' sales this year in China and Japan were largely from local customers, said Dumas. "Not very many foreigners buy Hermès in Japan, and the Chinese tend to buy in China." The luxury company reported overall sales revenue for the first half of the year of 7.5 billion euros, an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2023.

The secondhand market has become an increasingly important part of the luxury market, rising to $50 billion last year, according to Bain & Company. But there are dangers to buying on the secondhand market: counterfeit products, which the rise in "dupe culture" has only helped to escalate. THE COIN, by Yasmin ZaherHalfway through Yasmin Zaher’s debut novel, “The Coin,” the unnamed narrator, a Palestinian schoolteacher in New York City, arrives at the Hermès flagship store on Paris’s Rue Saint-Honoré to buy a Birkin. “Every year, regardless of poverty, war or famine, the price of the Birkin bag increases,” she explains. (He, in turn, left her millions of dollars that she cannot access except by allowance from her patronizing older brother.) Or with her own rootlessness, her parentless exile from a place in which her family had already been exiled for generations? Rupite, Bulgaria Reuters —Bulgarian archaeologists stumbled upon unexpected treasure this week during a dig in an ancient Roman sewer — a well-preserved, marble statue depicting the Greek god Hermes. Archaeologists pictured with the statue, which was covered with soil in an ancient Roman sewer. There are a few fractures on the hands,” said Lyudmil Vagalinski, who led the team of archaeologists, adding that the statue was a Roman copy of an ancient Greek original. To better understand what makes Ferrari a luxury brand, CNBC traveled to Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, Italy, to interview the company's CEO, Benedetto Vigna. When is a fashion show not just a fashion show? Indeed, the front-row stars are as much an attention-grabbing part of the shows as the shows themselves. In a world of fashion micro-trends, that may be the biggest trend of all. This was especially true this season, as the shows of the five big heritage French brands — Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Dior and Balenciaga — served as de facto calling cards for the Paris Olympics, which is being touted as the most “fashion” Olympics ever. It is no coincidence that two of those brands, Louis Vuitton and Dior, are owned by LVMH, which is a top-line sponsor of the Olympics.

This report is from this week's CNBC's "Inside India" newsletter which brings you timely, insightful news and market commentary on the emerging powerhouse and the big businesses behind its meteoric rise. "This particular product, and broadly speaking, the domestic investor, has driven the upsurge in the Indian stock markets," Mahesh Nandurkar, head of India research at Jefferies, told CNBC. For instance, of the nearly 4,900 actively traded India-listed stocks, 300 stocks had a fall in revenue in the last two consecutive financial years. Foreign investors have historically had a significant influence on local equity markets. For now, the savings directed into equity markets are still a tiny proportion of the overall savings Indians put away annually.

Neighborhood names are also shorthand for your rent or mortgage payments. In 2017, real-estate brokers in the historically Black New York neighborhood of Harlem sparked backlash when they tried to rebrand its south end as SoHa. At their best, new neighborhood names bring people together over a shared sense of pride in their little corner of the world. Along the way, these neighborhood names have veered into parody territory. I'm not saying that neighborhood names should be set in stone — in fact, I think it's natural for them to evolve alongside their populations.

Burberry’s profit slumps by a third as sales in China plunge
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London — British luxury brand Burberry has reported a 34% drop in annual profit after sales fell sharply in China — its biggest market — in the final three months of last year. The company had previously warned that achieving its goal of taking the 168-year-old brand further upmarket, to become the definition of “Modern British Luxury,” had been harder than expected after demand for luxury had slowed. Sales fell 12% in the final quarter, dragged down by a 19% slump in China, and wiping out gains made earlier in the year, Burberry said Wednesday. Sales in London, its home market, declined 17%, which Chief Executive Jonathan Akeroyd blamed on a lack of tax-free shopping for tourists. The world’s largest luxury group, Louis Vuitton owner LVMH, also reported weak sales in its latest quarter as spending on luxury items slowed.
