NEW YORK (AP) — It may not be too “appeeling,” but the price tags of some bananas are rising by a few cents. Trader Joe's recently upped the price for a single banana to 23 cents, a 4-cent — or 21% — increase from the grocer's previous going rate for the fruit that had remained unchanged for over 20 years. In contrast to other foods more heavily impacted by inflation, bananas have stayed relatively affordable over time — with average global prices never exceeding more than about 80 cents per pound (0.45 kilograms). Still, banana prices have seen some jumps in recent years. In the U.S., the cost of a pound of bananas averaged at about 63 cents last month.

New York CNN —Food prices have gone a bit bananas — and that includes a famously priced 19-cent fruit at Trader Joe’s. The snack-heavy grocer told CNN on Monday that it recently increased the price of the banana to 23 cents, a more than 20% increase. The 19-cent banana is a well-known deal at Trader Joe’s — so much so that it’s ranked as the favorite piece of produce by the company’s customers. However, CBS News reported that experts from the World Banana Forum in March warned that climate change and rising temperatures can drive up banana prices. Trader Joe’s noted it has been able to lower prices for some of its other produce, such as raw almonds, romaine hearts, organic tri-color bell peppers, and green onions.

One of Trader Joe's most popular products has just gotten its first-ever price increase. The popular grocery store chain recently raised the price of its individually-sold bananas by roughly 20%, to 23 cents from 19 cents. Trader Joe's bananas have cost 19 cents apiece since the chain first started selling them individually back in 2001. The never-changing price tag became a selling point for the fruit, with signage at some Trader Joe's locations boasting about the store's refusal to increase the cost of potassium-rich produce. The 19-cent bananas have proved so popular over the years that they recently made the Trader Joe's Product Hall of Fame.

Some of the 800 new locations will be store conversions from its now-complete acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, with a “significant number” of those locations — largely located in the Southeast — ditching their respective names and being remodeled into an Aldi. Approximately 50 stores will be converted later this year, with a majority of those reopening under the Aldi name in 2025. However, the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets names won’t completely disappear: Aldi said that a “meaningful amount” of locations will retain that branding. Aldi’s newest plan brings its store count to nearly 3,000 US locations, a notable expansion but still trailing against its rivals. If their merger is approved, Kroger and Albertson’s will have about 4,500 locations and Walmart, the nation’s largest grocer, has nearly 5,000.

Walmart expanded its same-day delivery offering to allow shoppers to get online purchases dropped off earlier in the morning. With same-day deliveries, the three retailers are not only trying to outmatch one another on convenience. With Target's announcement this week, Walmart, Target and Kroger will all have paid membership programs with home deliveries as one of the benefits. Kroger has used online delivery to break into new regions of the country, including Florida, without opening a single grocery store. Walmart and Target both beat Wall Street's sales expectations for the holiday quarter, but said shoppers are still very value-focused.

Starting last year, profitability became a more consistent story for the largest online grocery marketplace in North America, with millions of monthly active orderers and Instacart+ members. The company says it has now delivered over one billion orders across its 85,000-store network encompassing 1,500 retail partners. "There were a lot of questions about whether Instacart would be just another pandemic fad," CEO Fidji Simo told CNBC . Simo, who took the top role at the company in 2021 and launched the Instacart Health delivery service in 2022, has made health care a personal passion. "Patients often go through years-long diagnostic odysseys, bouncing around from specialist to specialist with no one looking at the whole picture," Simo wrote on her LinkedIn.

Don't expect Instacart to replace its gig worker shoppers with robots anytime soon. Instacart CEO Fidji Simo says the company can deliver faster and more efficiently using its human shoppers. That's a contrast with companies like Kroger, which have built warehouses to automate order picking. Kroger has a network of warehouses that it built with British grocer Ocado, where robots and some humans assemble orders, for instance. Human workers still drive to customers' homes to deliver the orders.

Even Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was only a two-hour drive from home — where the diverse terrain and charming village are world-famous and Winter Olympics-worthy for good reason. The ride in a private taxi to Niseko, Hokkaido took around two hours. Here are five reasons Niseko offered a better experience than Whistler, but why I would still choose the North American ski resort over the Japanese ski destination. Even if the snow in Whistler isn't as consistent, it surpasses the Japanese ski town for many reasons. We will probably make our way back to a different ski resort in Japan while living in Asia.

Last March, Emily Schildt opened Pop Up Grocer on a Bleecker Street corner in the West Village, selling artfully packaged condiments, beverages and other products made by small, emerging brands in a pay-to-play business model. Customers can buy artisanal hot sauces or zucchini chips from brands like Peepal People and Van Van that pay a fee to be on the shelves. Typically 150 to 200 brands are on display at a time, and some are replaced on a quarterly basis. One 27-square-foot space in the West Village, an affluent neighborhood in Manhattan, was recently listed for $5,000 a month. But some ambitious entrepreneurs are experimenting with business models, like charging shelf fees or selling wholesale to make ends meet.

OK, you’re thinking that you’ve had more thrilling news from the grocer on banana prices. People there were a tad piqued by the Democrats’ decision to move the first official party vote to South Carolina. Despite all that rancor, Phillips, who, unlike President Biden, was on the ballot, got about 24,000 votes to Biden’s nearly 80,000 write-ins.

An Israeli strike on the Syrian capital on Saturday destroyed a building used by the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, killing at least four Iranians, Syrian and Iranian state media reported. Iranian state television said four advisers from the Revolutionary Guard had been killed in the strike in Damascus, without identifying them, adding that Israel was behind the strike. Last month, an Israeli airstrike on a suburb of Damascus killed Iranian general Seyed Razi Mousavi, a longtime adviser of the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in Syria. Iranian and Syrian officials have long acknowledged Iran has advisers and military experts in Syria, but denied there were any ground troops. Earlier this month, a strike said to be carried out by Israel killed top Hamas commander Saleh Arouri in Beirut.

Supermarket chain Kroger's proposed acquisition of rival Albertsons is now expected to close in the first half of Kroger's fiscal year 2024 instead of early this year. Kroger, Albertsons and C&S Wholesale Grocers said they are in "active and ongoing dialogue" with the Federal Trade Commission and individual state attorneys general, according to the joint statement. In a bid to close the proposed $24.6 billion deal, Kroger agreed in September to divest 413 stores and eight distribution centers to C&S for $1.9 billion. With regulatory approval, the merger may require C&S to purchase an additional 237 stores from Kroger and Albertsons, Kroger said last year. Washington state's attorney general filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the proposed merger, calling it "harmful" for shoppers and workers.
