The Lindaburys' debt to Atrium Health from 2009 grew over time to include almost $100,000 in interest charges. Americans owe $220 billion in medical debt, according to KFF, a nonprofit health policy research, polling and news organization. Research conducted by the Urban Institute found that medical debt is more common in the South and among people in low-income ZIP codes. In 2021, the institute found that three North Carolina counties were among the 10 U.S. counties whose residents held the most medical debt. Recognizing the burden that medical debt places on consumers, some states have moved in recent years to remedy the problem.

Oil prices inched lower on Friday as investors focused on a forecast of ample supply and shrugged off expectations of higher demand next year from Chinese stimulus measures, while eyeing another Federal Reserve interest rate cut next week. Supply is expected to exceed demand growth forecast of 1.1 million bpd, IEA said in its monthly oil market report, raising its demand forecast from 990,000 bpd last month. Three of Canada's biggest oil producers forecast higher production in 2025. Building on record production in the U.S., Goldman Sachs expects Lower 48 shale oil production to grow by 600,000 bpd in 2025 although the growth could slow if Brent falls below $70 a barrel. Chinese crude imports grew annually for the first time in seven months in November, driven by lower prices and stockpiling.

Why the dinner party is a declining art

CNN —Until a few months ago, the thought of hosting a dinner party filled me with dread. Over the next several decades, women entered the workforce at a rapid pace, leading to the decline of the formal dinner party, Julier says. Illustration by Leah Abucayan/CNN/Adobe StockToday, by several accounts, the dinner party is all but dead. A dinner party, whether you’re attending or throwing it, requires you to be “on” and fully engaged for a sustained length of time. Roberts’ account reminded me of the role that the dinner party played in my own upbringing.

On Sunday, after 13 years of civil war that fractured the country, the regime came crashing down. Rebel fighters declared Damacus “liberated” in a video statement on state television, sending Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia. The congregational prayers – seen as the pinnacle of the Islamic week – were the first since the fall of the Assadregime. There's a growing fear among market commentators the Fed will make a policy mistake. AdvertisementFrederic Mishkin, a former Fed Governor, said that cutting interest rates with inflation still above target could produce a harmful setup for the economy. Economists have warned that the Fed cutting rates too early could risk reigniting inflation. It could also risk inflation expectations becoming unanchored, which could prompt stagflation, a situation in which growth is sluggish while prices remain stubbornly high. AdvertisementDarrell Cronk, the chief investment officer of Wells Fargo's wealth and investment arm, said the Fed's decision to potentially cut interest rates in December could be a "mistake down the road."

WASHINGTON — Key House and Senate lawmakers are demanding top federal law enforcement officials immediately brief them about mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey and New York, as the White House downplayed any potential threats to national security or the public. But lawmakers say that they — and the public — need more information after weeks of sightings in New Jersey and other states. “But the public deserves to know more, and it’s up to the FBI and Homeland Security to brief the public immediately. For weeks, residents have been spotting and taking videos of drones, which officials have described as commercial-grade devices and not typical “hobbyist” drones. "We’re going to try to get answers, and we’ll go from there.”So far, an all-member House briefing on the drones has not been scheduled, though some individual members have been briefed.

Several subsequent studies trying to reproduce the results have found no link between vaccines and autism. Oil prices were little changed in early Asian trade on Thursday as forecasts of weak demand and a higher-than-expected rise in U.S. gasoline and distillate inventories stemmed gains from an additional round of European Union sanctions that threatened Russian oil flows. OPEC cut its demand growth forecasts for 2025 for the fifth straight month on Wednesday and by the largest amount yet. Weak demand, particularly in top importer China, and non-OPEC+ supply growth were two factors behind the move. However, investors anticipate a rise in Chinese demand, after Beijing unveiled plans this week to adopt an "appropriately loose" monetary policy in 2025, which could spur oil demand. The Kremlin said that reports of a possible tightening of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil suggested the administration of President Joe Biden wants to leave a difficult legacy for U.S.-Russia relations.

Online history can only tell us so much — but our reactions to it tell us a lot about society. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Luigi Mangione's internet footprint is that there's so much. European markets are heading for a mixed open as regional investors await the last monetary policy decision from the European Central Bank (ECB). The central bank is heading for its final interest rate cut of the year on Thursday, with economists expecting a 25-basis-point rate cut rather than the "jumbo" 50-basis-point move that was previously expected. The ECB is also due to release its quarterly macroeconomic projections on growth and inflation. The Swiss National Bank is also due to announce its latest monetary policy decision Thursday. The figures showed that consumer prices rose 0.3% month on month and grew at a 12-month rate of 2.7%, in line with economists' estimates.
