Jacobs started monitoring changes to her blood sugar with the help of a device called a continuous glucose monitor — an increasingly trendy wearable. Continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs for short, were FDA-approved in 1999 for people with diabetes to keep constant tabs on their blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar level measures how much glucose is in your blood, which comes from breaking down carbohydrates you eat for energy. After reading about how age-related hormone changes can affect blood sugar, she started tracking hers, and noticed a pattern. Research doesn't support the fear that rising blood sugar after a meal is cause for concern in otherwise healthy people.

Annabelle Chih/Getty ImagesA quarantine or, taking things a step further, blockade of Taiwan has long been discussed by Chinese military planners and various officials and experts as an option for China to achieve unification with Taiwan. The first, an all-out kinetic blockade, is the harshest option and is very closely aligned with Chinese military doctrine. CNN —Eating an anti-inflammatory diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables instead of an inflammatory diet focused on red and processed meats and ultraprocessed foods, such as sugary cereals, sodas, fries and ice cream, lowered the risk of dementia by 31%, a new study found. “Following an anti-inflammatory diet was related to lower risk of dementia, even among people with cardiometabolic diseases who are already at elevated risk of dementia,” said Dove, a doctoral student at the Aging Research Center at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, Sweden, in an email. Brain scans of those who followed an anti-inflammatory diet also showed significantly lower levels of brain biomarkers of neurodegeneration and vascular injury, Dove said. carlosgaw/E+/Getty Images/FileWhat is an anti-inflammatory diet? Parts of Canada’s Boreal Forest Are Burning Faster Than They Can Regrow The delicate balance of one the planet’s largest natural systems for storing carbon depends on the humble black spruce tree. The boreal forests are the largest forests in the world, and in Western Canada they evolved to burn once every century or so. What was troubling, Dr. Baltzer noted, is that fire isn’t supposed to make life harder for the black spruce tree. Any imbalance in this tug of war between life and death can threaten the boreal forests’ ability to store heat-trapping carbon. Given how huge the boreal forests are, her research could help shed light on which parts of the ecosystem were most important to protect.

The flooding happens because a smaller glacier near Mendenhall Glacier had retreated — a casualty of the warming climate — and left a basin that fills with rainwater and snowmelt each spring and summer. When the water creates enough pressure, it forces its way under or around the ice dam created by the Mendenhall Glacier and enters Mendenhall Lake and eventually the Mendenhall River, as it did this week. On Wednesday, piles of garbage bags and other items — wood, boxes, sodden insulation and carpeting — dotted the curbs. The city said the water reached some homes outside expected flood areas. Her dad woke her up hours later via FaceTime and alerted her to rising water outside.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. It is the first street to greet many travelers as they arrive at Pennsylvania Station or the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It is the backdrop to any night spent at a Broadway show or Madison Square Garden, or just out on the town. At the best of times, it is the Champs-Élysées of hot dog carts: a grand thoroughfare of vendors, tourists and commuters whose bustle brings the city to life. Pedestrians crowd the sidewalk and overflow into an ad hoc expansion of it, created in 2016 when the city began to cordon off a lane of traffic and paint it gray.

Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

There are cracks forming in the US jobs market

CNN —The pandemic threw the US job market into chaos, but four years later, things finally seem to be back to normal. Most indicators support the idea that the labor market is no longer overheated and could easily maintain a new normal of steady, but slower growth. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 4.1%, according to FactSet consensus estimates. “This is a labor market that’s otherwise moderated,” Nick Bunker, director of North American economic research at Indeed, told CNN. The same goes for the prime-age labor force participation rate, which at 83.7% also is the highest in 23 years.
