Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) members from the General Motors Lansing Delta Plant picket in Delta Township, Michigan U.S. September 29, 2023. Dana said the UAW strikes affected some of its largest light truck programs, including Ford Super Duty, Ranger and Bronco as well as Stellantis' Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. "The longer the UAW strike continues, the greater financial stress there will be across the Tier 2 through Tier 4 supply base," Dana's chief executive James Kamsickas said in a post-earnings call with analysts. Dana expects its full-year sales to be $10.7 billion if UAW strikes through Oct. 31, or $10.2 billion with strikes through Dec. 31. The new GM logo is seen on the facade of the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., March 16, 2021. Though Fain signaled a deal may be close, some analysts expressed worries about the financial impact of the demands on the automakers. The UAW wants workers at EV battery plants to be covered by union contracts, and defined benefit pensions restored for all workers. The strikes and the negotiations with the UAW have weighed on automakers' shares. Since the contract talks began in mid-July, U.S.-listed shares of Stellantis have marginally risen, while Ford and GM shares were down at about 23% and nearly 27%, respectively.

With the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike entering its 36th day and the total economic cost pegged at more than $7 billion, companies are counting the cost of lost revenue amid an uncertain economy and persistent inflation. "The damage from the strikes will last long after UAW members return to work," University of Michigan professor Erik Gordon said. Earlier this week, consultancy firm Anderson Economic Group estimated the economic losses related to supplier wages and earnings of about $2.67 billion through fourth week of the strike. An agreement remains elusive so far and shares of automakers and suppliers have fallen since the strike began on Sept. 15.

American Airlines orders four Embraer E175s for Envoy Air

American's previous deal for seven E175s, announced in June, underscored a U.S. regional aviation market recovering from rough years marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. "We maintain our optimistic view on Embraer, and believe that 2024-25 could translate into a period of a solid pipeline of deliveries." The order will take Envoy Air's fleet of E-Jets to more than 150 aircraft by the end of next year, Embraer said. The United States is the main market for the first-generation E-Jets, which Embraer dubs "the backbone" of that country's regional network. Last month, Embraer also announced a firm order for five E175s from Nigeria's Air Peace.

Canadian autoworkers union Unifor ratifies GM labor deal

The Canadian union, which represents about 4,300 workers at GM in these talks, said 80.5% of its members at facilities in Oshawa, St. Catharines and Woodstock voted in favor of the deal. The deal with GM followed the pattern set with Ford Motor (F.N), which settled with Unifor last month. In the United States, about 9,200 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union have affected two GM assembly plants and 18 parts distribution centers. GM also has furloughed about 2,300 U.S. workers due to the impact of the UAW strike. Unifor has used the "pattern bargaining" approach in its talks, reaching a deal first with Ford and then picking GM as the second bargaining target.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A local Democratic official in Connecticut's largest city invoked her 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination Friday rather than answer questions in court about allegations of illegal ballot box stuffing during a recent mayoral primary. In some of them, a woman resembling Geter-Pataky, who works as a greeter at the City Hall annex, can be seen making repeat trips to an absentee ballot drop box outside the building early in the morning on Sept. 5 and stuffing documents inside. In other videos, it appears she hands other people documents that could be ballots and escorts them to the box. Gomes' attorney in the lawsuit, William Bloss, said the videos prove widespread abuse of the absentee ballot system in Bridgeport. Under Connecticut law, certain family members, police, local election officials or a caregiver can drop off a ballot for an absentee voter.

Oct 10 (Reuters) - Kerrisdale Capital said on Tuesday it had taken a short position on Joby Aviation (JOBY.N) over profitability concerns, sending the electric aircraft maker's shares down nearly 5%. California-based Joby said Kerrisdale has a "vested interest" in lowering its share price. Joby plans to operate like a rideshare app, unlike other electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) peers that intend to sell their aircraft to customers including airlines and logistics firms. Kerrisdale warned of higher operating costs as the company's electric aircraft are likely to offer lower range and power than traditional helicopters. The U.S. aviation regulator in June gave Joby, which is backed by investors such as Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), Toyota Motor (7203.T) and Intel Corp (INTC.O), the nod to flight-test its electric air taxi.

Among the many conspiracy theories that have fueled that belief on the right are those surrounding ballot drop boxes. Users have promoted the investigation as evidence for the persistent, false narratives about widespread fraud connected to ballot drop boxes. Some Republican lawmakers, who had raised concerns about the security of drop boxes during the pandemic, said the Bridgeport videos prove they were correct. In many cases, drop boxes are placed in locations where they can be monitored by election staff or security cameras. “It’s not the ballot boxes that are the problem,” said Cheri Quickmire, executive director of the voter advocacy group Common Cause in Connecticut.

Sept 29 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday expanded its coordinated U.S. strike, this time targeting a plant at General Motors (GM.N) and Ford Motor (F.N) but refraining from an additional walkout from Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. Talks between Ford and UAW negotiators stalled during the week after the two appeared to be close to an agreement, sources familiar with the development said. Under the new legislation, the monitor will conduct inspections and investigations for the 2023 municipal election and the 2024 state election in Bridgeport. The possible electoral fraud incident is already the subject of a state elections investigation and a civil lawsuit filed by the candidate who lost the primary. Republicans in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly insisted Connecticut must take more steps to tighten its electoral laws and ensure confidence in elections across the state. “It's necessary to show the people of Connecticut that we're not going to tolerate people undermining our election process,” said state Sen. The $150,000 for the election monitor had been approved earlier this year for the two-year position, but it was mistakenly sent to the wrong state agency.
