Now, Hyundai Motor Group is adding another amenity to that list: a bigger and better glove compartment. The newly designed glovebox is modeled on overhead bins in airliners, Hyundai Motor Group said Wednesday. The dashboard invention was the gold medal winner in an internal contest at Hyundai Mobis, the auto parts division of Hyundai Motor. For example, Toyota eschews a glove box entirely in its electric vehicles, the Toyota BZ4X and Lexus RZ 450e. Why it’s called a glove boxToday’s glove box is the direct descendant of storage bins in early automobiles that were usually in the floor or under the seat.

CNN —Thanks to a combination of new models, more production and new tax laws, electric vehicles are no longer just for the wealthy. Currently the “days supply” of electric vehicles – a measure of the number units on dealer lots relative to how quickly they sell – is now twice that of new vehicles overall. The biggest bargain among electric vehicles currently, whether you lease or buy, happens to be one that’s going away soon. Goodyear Tire to expand board in settlement with Elliott

The firm urged the company to refresh the board, sell its stores and conduct an operational review. On Tuesday, Goodyear said it would establish a strategic and operational review committee. Elliott, which has a history of taking board seats at companies including Twitter and eBay, had previously criticized the tyre-manufacturer for mismanagement and lagging behind its rivals, Michelin and Bridgestone. "We have been encouraged by Goodyear's openness to taking actions necessary to realize its full potential," Elliott executives said in a statement on Tuesday. MEXICO CITY, July 19 (Reuters) - The United States and Mexico reached an agreement to remedy violations of workers' rights at a Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co (GT.O) plant in the Mexican city of San Luis Potosi, both countries said on Wednesday. The Mexican government has committed to carry out a number of measures under the agreement, the U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) office said in a statement. Goodyear must also inform workers of their labor rights and respect union activity, the USTR said. Mexico will carry out periodic inspections of the plant, and if warranted, could impose sanctions on people, labor organizations or the company, the USTR said. The remediation plan comes after a petition from a Mexican independent union, which found Goodyear was offering employees fewer benefits than an industry-wide agreement required.

The orcas may be protecting their young from boats, or they may think damaging rudders is fun. Experts have two very different theories for the behavior, and they still can't agree on which one is more likely. The orcas are trying to protect their youngA pod or orcas, or killer whales, with a baby orca among them. None of these techniques has been particularly effective, López told Insider. GTOA is consulting with the Portuguese government to try to develop "acoustic deterrents" that could keep the orcas away from the boats, López said.

Why killer whales won’t stop ramming boats in Spain

The reason why certain whales are taking such a forward interest in boats is still unclear, but experts have a couple of theories. A pod of killer whales (Orcinus orca) swims together in the Strait of Gibraltar in August. The encounter usually ends once the killer whales break the rudder or the boat comes to a complete stop. “The official recommendation is not to do anything at all, turn off the engine or lower the sails and be as uninteresting to the killer whales as possible. “But this very vulnerable little population of killer whales depends on our love for them.

Noise deterrents are being developed to scare orcas away from boats, a Portuguese trade association said. The association said sailors in the area are "afraid" to take their boats into Portuguese waters. Alfredo López of the Grupo de trabajo Orca Atlántica, which is collaborating with the Portuguese government, told Insider the work is in the very early stages. Noise deterrents typically work by emitting pulses of high-frequency sound to scare away sea creatures from an area. While types of acoustic deterrents exist, none are specifically designed to be used for orcas and sailboats, he said.

10 Things in Tech: Apple's big metaverse push
  + stars: | 2023-06-05 | by ( Hallam Bullock | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
This week, Apple is preparing to do what no tech firm has managed yet: make the metaverse cool. Apple is ready to enter its metaverse era, but the rest of the world might not be. Some people think it's unwise to ramp up efforts to push into the metaverse — especially at a time when the metaverse is said to be headed to the industry's graveyard of failed ideas. However, it's also unwise to bet against Apple — a company whose epic feats in tech have earned its leaders cult-like status. It's quick, stylish, and high-tech, Insider's Tim Levin writes, but it falls short in range and cargo space.

After a record-breaking year in 2022, Bentley Motors reported surging profits in the first quarter due in large part to car customization, CEO Adrian Hallmark said. Bentley reported its best-ever first quarter, with operating profits up 27% to 216 million euros, or about $232 million. The reason: Wealthy buyers are spending more to personalize their cars with special paint colors, leather, stitching and details. "Customers are choosing one of our 62 paint colors, the 43 leathers we offer and lots of options," Hallmark told CNBC. Bentley's Mulliner Edition department at the company's Crewe factory is turning out record numbers of one-of-a-kind Bentleys with special paint colors, metal finishes and embroidery.
But Michelin, Continental and Pirelli (PIRC.MI) told Reuters they are pursuing alternatives to 6PPD, with Michelin and Continental adding collective industry action may be necessary to find solutions. Continental said its dandelion tyres were developed to find a sustainable form of natural rubber, and addressing 6PPD was a separate focus. The worst-performing rival tyres Michelin has tested so far emit around 8 kg per year. Michelin and Continental said they are already focused on making their tyres more durable - Michelin cut its tyre emissions 5% between 2015 and 2020, Roget said. "The advent of the EV is the time to make this change," to improve tyres," Enso's Erlendsson said.

LONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Former Formula One champion Jenson Button wants to drive a Hypercar at Le Mans next year and says he would be up for a full season of the world endurance championship if the right opportunity comes along. The Briton will be taking part in the 24 Hours race at the Sarthe circuit on June 10-11 this year as part of a special NASCAR entry with seven times NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller. Johnson, 47, has never been to Le Mans while Button, 43, endured a short-lived debut in 2018 with the Russian-backed SMP team. The World Endurance Championship (WEC) has seven rounds, including Le Mans, while the North American IMSA series has 11 but is nearer to home. "I’m running out of items, especially in a major professional setting," said the Californian, who was never able to race Le Mans previously due to calendar clashes with NASCAR and IndyCars.

AWD EVs have an extra motor, which consumes more energy and decreases range. Two extra drive wheels help increase traction and mean an AWD EV will be more capable and confident in snow and other slippery conditions. Thanks to that boost in horsepower and torque, AWD EVs tend to accelerate much quicker than ones with front- or rear-wheel drive. Ford rates the entry-level Mustang Mach-E at 250 miles for RWD models and 226 miles for AWD ones. AWD gas vehicles are also less fuel efficient than their 2WD counterparts, but it isn't a big deal beyond the added emissions and gas costs.

Companies Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co Follow(Reuters) - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co (GT.O) convinced an Ohio federal judge on Friday to throw out a $64 million jury verdict over its alleged theft of trade secrets related to self-inflating tires. A jury decided last year that Goodyear misappropriated five of the 12 trade secrets Coda accused it of misusing. But Lioi said Friday that four of the five secrets – related to Coda's design, development and placement of self-inflating tire pumps – were not specific enough to be considered protectable trade secrets. Lioi said Coda's fifth alleged secret, related to developing a functional self-inflating tire, was "no secret at all" because the concept was not new in 2009. The case is Coda Development SRO v.
