REUTERS/Hollie Adams/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Britain said on Wednesday it would start work on setting up new rules specially designed to prevent a big insurance company collapse from crashing the financial system. But no such specifically tailored regime currently exists in Britain to deal with failures in the country's insurance industry, which is the fourth largest in the world. The European Union is in the process of approving its own set of rules for handling insurance company failures. In Britain, insurance company collapses currently come under modified UK company insolvency arrangements, which the finance ministry said may be less effective for an industry with 2.7 trillion pounds ($3.45 trillion) in assets. The timing of the new regime is unclear given that legislation is needed and Britain is likely to face national elections next year.

In Tangier, Morocco, near the arched entry gate of the 10th-century Kasbah wall, small shops and houses line narrow streets. The rhythm of daily life includes the call to prayer five times a day, the buzz of motorbikes whizzing by and sea breezes offering relief from the sun. It is also here, high above the Strait of Gibraltar, that a vine-covered house with a storied past sits on a lush 2.5-acre site, its verdant gardens sweeping down to the sea. Now the house has been given its next life. Its name is Villa Mabrouka, which means “house of luck” in Arabic.

Grey whales in Mexico are approaching tourist boats to get help from humans, The Dodo reported. A video shows a whale-watching captain picking parasites off a whale's head as it spins around. The whale has repeatedly come to the captain to get its head picked, he told The Dodo. It shows a grey whale approaching the small tourist boat as the captain, identified as Paco Jimenez Franco, starts picking whale lice off its head. Speaking about his first one-on-one encounter with the whale, Franco said: "Once I removed the first one, she approached again so that I could continue to do so."

Her team found that 63% of slightly damaged boats didn't follow protocol, compared with 36% that did. Roughly half of the damaged boats followed protocol, and the other half didn't. The protocol didn't seem to have an effect. "In very severe damage, when towing is required, we don't find significant evidence to follow or not follow our protocol," she said in the webinar. But the leading ideas are curious young orcas or defensive behavior by orcas that have been harmed before, González said in the webinar.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

The orcas may be protecting their young from boats, or they may think damaging rudders is fun. Experts have two very different theories for the behavior, and they still can't agree on which one is more likely. The orcas are trying to protect their youngA pod or orcas, or killer whales, with a baby orca among them. None of these techniques has been particularly effective, López told Insider. GTOA is consulting with the Portuguese government to try to develop "acoustic deterrents" that could keep the orcas away from the boats, López said.

Why killer whales won’t stop ramming boats in Spain

The reason why certain whales are taking such a forward interest in boats is still unclear, but experts have a couple of theories. A pod of killer whales (Orcinus orca) swims together in the Strait of Gibraltar in August. The encounter usually ends once the killer whales break the rudder or the boat comes to a complete stop. “The official recommendation is not to do anything at all, turn off the engine or lower the sails and be as uninteresting to the killer whales as possible. “But this very vulnerable little population of killer whales depends on our love for them.

Orca pod attacks Ocean Race boats near Gibraltar

Reuters —The crew of the Ocean Race’s Team JAJO endured several heart-stopping minutes on their approach to the Strait of Gibraltar on Thursday when their boat came under attack from a pod of orcas. “This was a scary moment,” Team JAJO skipper Jelmer van Beek said. Impressive to see the orcas, beautiful animals, but also a dangerous moment for us as a team. Authorities have noted a steady increase in interactions between orcas and vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and Portugal, with more than 20 incidents in May alone. Earlier this week, an orca repeatedly rammed into a yacht in the North Sea off Shetland, in the first such incident in northern waters.

A rare pod of orcas washed up dead on a beach in Chile late last year, according to LiveScience. It was only the second time in recorded history the Type D orcas had been found stranded. It's the first mass stranding of these killer whales in 67 years and only the second event of its kind in recorded history, according to LiveScience. Type D orcas have one of the highest levels of inbreeding of any mammalLittle is known about Type D orcas, since they tend to live in especially turbulent and rough seas in the Southern Pacific where few boats venture. The researchers found an almost identical genetic code between Type D orcas in Chile and the skeleton of a Type D that was beached in New Zealand.

The result left France top with 12 points, six ahead of second-placed Greece, who had Konstantinos Mavropanos sent off in the 69th minute after Mbappe's 55th minute spot kick. "We wanted to follow up on our win against Gibraltar, in front of our crowd," said midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, referring to France's 3-0 win on Friday. It came after earlier opportunities for Mbappe and Kingsley Coman but the offensive trio hit a brick wall. Vlachodimos parried Mbappe's spot kick but it had to be taken again as the keeper had left his goal line too early. After Saturday's win over Gibraltar, France have now scored nine goals and kept clean sheets in all four qualifying games.

A man who has been tracking sightings and attacks said there's "one incident every day, on average." In some cases, there's been more than one reported attack in a single day in June, so far. The map shows 10 attacks since June 1 and an additional 12 orca sightings in the same time period. For example, on June 3, there were four identified orca attacks and on June 8, there were two. Footage shows an orca swimming off with a destroyed rudder after killer whales attacked a catamaran. The boat was sailing in the Strait of Gibraltar in April, an area where orcas have been targeting boats. Recently-posted footage appears to show one of the killer whales swimming off with one of the severed rudders. A pod of orcas attacked a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar, ripping off both of its rudders. The sailor said it felt as though the orcas were throwing the yacht around "like a rag doll." There have been 20 incidents of orca attacks in the Strait of Gibraltar in the past month alone. He also said the killer whales moved in a way that seemed "choreographed, almost, like synchronized swimming," according to the radio broadcast. Insider's Isobel Van Hagen previously reported on an incident last month in which a pod of orcas rammed a yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar.

A pod of orcas rammed a yacht off the Spanish coast, destroying the rudder and piercing the hull. The crew was forced to make a Mayday call for assistance when the boat began to fill with water. Earlier this week, a pod of orcas rammed into the Mustique, destroying the yacht's rudder and piercing the hull. In an Instagram post on Saturday, Boyes added that interactions with orcas can be "quite terrifying." Boyes urged that more research into the "beautiful creatures" needs to be done, especially as the attacks are increasingly common.
A traumatized female orca could be behind the increased killer whale attacks on boats. A traumatic event may have triggered a change in White Gladis' behavior, experts told LiveScience. While most orca interactions with boats are harmless, there has been a spike in aggressive behavior towards boats since 2020, biologist Alfredo López Fernandez told LiveScience. Janet Morris and Stephen Bidwell were on an already-bumpy ride when the crew spotted the killer whales on May 2 in the Strait of Gibraltar. as a pod of killer whales began banging into their 46-foot boat, per The Times.
A sculpture on Jeff Bezos' new $500 million megayacht has tongues wagging: Is it his girlfriend? Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, were recently spotted on the yacht for the first time. A sculpture on Jeff Bezos' new megayacht has people wondering whether it's his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez. Bezos and Sanchez, who went public with their relationship in 2019, were first spotted on the new $500 million superyacht earlier this week off the coast of Spain. The yacht made its maiden voyage in April when it left Oceanco's facilities to travel to Gibraltar on the way to Bezos.
A shirtless Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, have been spotted on his new $500 million yacht. The 417-foot vessel had stirred controversy when it nearly required a historic bridge be dismantled for it to pass. Residents threatened to egg the yacht; the vessel was then quietly towed to another shipyard to avoid a scene. The billionaire Amazon founder was seen shirtless as he sunbathed on the $500 million yacht with his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, along the coast of Spain on Monday, according to Page Six. Check out the photos of Bezos and Sanchez on the yacht on Page Six.
Orcas keep attacking sailboats off the coasts of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. One sailor shared his encounter with killer whales, after a pod of orcas sank a boat last year. Orca attacks have sometimes immobilized sailboats, but local media said that, in this instance, it caused so much damage that the vessel started to sink. The passengers, who were sleeping at the time of the attack, were traveling from Lisbon to the Algarve, per the local media outlet Portugal Resident. And that number comes from a collaboration of scientists collecting reports, not from local media outlets.
