Though he had spent the last four decades mastering his craft, “The Resurrection Window” made Quagliata nervous. The power of light and glass struck him in the 1960s, soon after he left Rome to become an artist in the United States. “I kept thinking: What I would do with red glass, with blue glass?” Quagliata said. In “The Resurrection Window,” Christ’s skin is yellow.

Two experts explain how long it could take until fusion power plants are possible. Fusion plants could theoretically produce almost 4 million times as much energy as burning coal or oil — with none of the carbon emissions. It's what Andrew Christlieb, who is part of a US Department of Energy fusion project at Michigan State University, calls "step zero." The US Department of Energy's Fusion Energy Sciences program has a $763 million budget for 2023, which could grow to over $1 billion next year. Achieving commercial fusion power in two decades won't be quick enough to address many countries' goals of adapting clean energy and limiting global warming by 2035.

Youth unemployment in China hit a record high of 21% in May. It's a problem not only for China's economy — it could hurt the US, as well. China's economy is on shaky ground as it emerges from very strict lockdown pandemic measures. That's compared to the US youth unemployment rate of 7.4% in May. "The stakes are high for correcting these imbalances, given how important the youth population is to China's economy," the note said.

Now, in the wake of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, Israel appears to be preparing to invade Gaza. At the center of these mounting tensions is Iran, which has been engaged in a shadow war with its chief regional rival, Israel, for years. It also gives Tehran leverage as its proxy groups develop political wings, helping Iran play kingmaker in local and national politics in Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and elsewhere. As the conflict intensifies, there are growing concerns that Israel may be headed toward a more direct confrontation with Iran. CNN —Cataclysmic events like the Hamas onslaught on Israel trigger profound political shocks and strategic transformations that no one could predict at the time. They unleashed extraordinary political forces inside nations like the United States and Britain, creating conditions that are still influencing society and elections. The Jewish state is no stranger to rocket attacks from Gaza or Lebanon or bus and suicide bombings. Republicans, led by ex-President Donald Trump, pounced on the Hamas attacks, seeking to saddle Biden with the blame over his attempts to defuse a US confrontation with Iran. So the war in Israel and Gaza will resonate far more widely than a cursed corner of the Middle East.

Softbank also owns 65% of the GreenBox venture, which launched with $100 million in investment by the two companies. But not as many investors know about Softbank's "other" big AI investment, Wilmington, Mass.-based software and robotics maker Symbotic , which Walmart has taken a big stake in itself. Symbotic teamed up with Softbank to build GreenBox in order to preserve its own capital, Cohen told analysts. In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said. For Behn, what Bly and Bisland did remains incredible and deserve to be remembered as much as Verne's story.

Safe to say that nobody would mistake this image for a Salle painting. Salle’s style has changed over the years, which made capturing his essence a little more challenging for an algorithm. Tokyo CNN —The iconic Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli, which created internationally beloved films including “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away,” has been sold to Nippon TV after failing to find a successor for its legendary co-founder and director Hayao Miyazaki. “With director Hayao Miyazaki now 82 years old and producer Toshio Suzuki also 75, Studio Ghibli has long been struggling with the issue of their successors,” the statement said. Nippon TV and Studio Ghibli have long worked together, with the former broadcasting Ghibli films on air, investing in Ghibli movie productions, and even helping fund the Ghibli Museum, the statement said. Under the new arrangement, Nippon TV will become the largest Ghibli shareholder with 42.3% of the voting rights. Since its founding in 1985, Studio Ghibli has been known for its hand-drawn animation, sticking to old-school, painstaking frame-by-frame methods.

A protester holds a portrait of Mahsa Amini during a demonstration in support of Amini, a young Iranian woman who died after being arrested in Tehran by the Islamic Republic's morality police, on Istiklal avenue in Istanbul on Sept. 20, 2022. Roughly one year ago, the death of a young Kurdish Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini in police custody lit the fuse that would set off months of protests that rocked Iran and its hardline government, creating the greatest challenge to its rule in decades. Amini, just 22 years old, was arrested for allegedly improperly wearing her hijab, the headscarf women are required to wear under Iran's highly conservative Islamic Republic. Iranian authorities claimed no wrongdoing and said Amini died of a heart attack; but her family, and masses of Iranians, accused the government of a cover-up. The protests spread across the country and evolved from being focused on women's rights to demanding the downfall of the entire Iranian regime.

Using low-quality USB-C chargers could make it easier to accidentally fry your phone. This is because some USB-C connectors don't have safeguards for electricity surges. This is the first time a new iPhone charger will be launched in over a decade. Apple recommends that iPhone owners use Apple chargers or other brands that meet certain safety regulations. MFi phone chargers have to pass safety regulations to make sure that users are not at risk while charging their devices.

But just seven years after dropping the atomic bombs, the United States detonated an even more powerful nuclear weapon: the hydrogen bomb. A hydrogen bomb, also known as a thermonuclear bomb, can create explosive force hundreds or even thousands of times greater than an atomic bomb. That extra challenge is why it took scientists longer to build a hydrogen bomb than the atomic bomb. Some physicists, including Oppenheimer, who were concerned about the far greater destructive potential of hydrogen bombs compared to atomic bombs, opposed their development. Hydrogen bomb tests were incredibly powerfulOn November 1, 1952, the US detonated the first hydrogen bomb at Enewetak atoll in the Marshall Islands.

I was a bit puzzled when I watched, because I happened to know that Rabi wasn’t a resident at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. But the film was historically accurate: Rabi did visit Los Alamos on occasion, and was present for the Trinity bomb test. Why wasn’t Rabi at Los Alamos? But the truth is that he was involved in another secret project applying cutting-edge science to the war effort, M.I.T.’s Radiation Laboratory, which basically worked on advanced radar. All of this was made possible not just by America’s economic might but also by its cultural and social openness.

You would be hard-pressed to find a more unhealthy example of obsession than that of the narrator in Maud Ventura’s MY HUSBAND (HarperVia, 260 pp., $28.99), a cautionary tale about marital claustrophobia translated from the French by Emma Ramadan. “I think of my husband all the time; I wish I could text him all day,” says the woman, a beautiful mother of two who lives in an elegant house in the Parisian suburbs. But she restrains herself. “I know I have to control myself in order to love.”
