In defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final in straight sets – a straightforward 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory against one of the sport’s greats – Alcaraz became the first Spaniard to successfully defend his Wimbledon crown, a feat not even Rafael Nadal had managed. Not even the “Big Three” of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic had won as many grand slams at such an age. Nadal was 22 by the time he had won four, Federer 23 and Djokovic 24. Extraordinary tennisThe match started in Technicolor, a 14-minute opening game which ended with Alcaraz breaking Djokovic. Perhaps the achievement of reaching a major final after suffering a meniscus tear during the French Open should not be lost in the aftermath of this contest.

CNN —The 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final is set: Jasmine Paolini will battle Barbora Krejčíková for the right to lift the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time in either of their careers. Paolini has already made history by becoming the first Italian woman to make the Wimbledon final and is seeking her maiden grand slam title after falling short in the French Open final last month. Paolini recently went on a surprise run to the French Open final, upsetting former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals and defeating 17-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva in the semis. American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way. Paolini a French Open finalist, defeated by Iga Swiatek; Keys a US Open finalist in 2017, and a Slam semifinalist five more times.
