Researchers discovered the stash in Notion, an 80-acre fortified city that was occupied from about the sixth century BC to the first century AD. “No one ever buries a hoard of coins, especially precious metal coins, without intending to retrieve it. One gold coin would have been the equivalent of a month’s salary for a mercenary soldier, according to the University of Michigan. Those were known as Persian silver sigloi, 20 of which would equate to one gold coin. Because of the gold coin’s high value, “it was far more efficient to store wealth in gold coins than in silver,” he added.

I’m not a natalist for economic reasons — though I do think aging societies can create economic problems. And I agree with my colleague Jessica Grose that there is too much panic among natalists about declining birthrates. Sacrificial love is not exclusive to parents, of course, but it flows naturally from decent people when they have kids. It has more promise as a cultural cause, but even then it is often scolding and even malicious. When JD Vance rants, for example, about “childless cat ladies,” he’s not engaged in a coherent cultural argument.

Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook. It's just picking up on the way gay people present themselves on dating sites — which, not surprisingly, is often very different from the way straight people present themselves to potential partners. Kosinski thinks AI's ability to make the kind of personality judgments he studies will only get better. According to public announcements, the firm has made four acquisition deals so far in 2024, exactly even with Nvidia's 2020 deal total. Nvidia declined to discuss its acquisition strategy for this report, citing a quiet period before it announces earnings on August 28. In May, Nvidia agreed to acquire Deci AI, another Israeli startup that makes tools for developers to build AI models, for $300 million. In July Nvidia competitor AMD announced an agreement to acquire Silo AI, a Finnish AI startup, for $655 million.
