Techies fled from San Francisco during the pandemic, and its resurgence stalled for a while. It's just south of Japantown, mere blocks from San Francisco City Hall, and north of the Mission District. Someone even said it would be "irresponsible" to not work on generative AI in San Francisco. There aren't any skeptics in the space yet, and the majority of generative AI investments land in the Bay Area. The FAA's outage was the second major air travel disruption in less than a month and drew bipartisan criticism. Later Wednesday, Canada's air navigation agency said its similar notification system experienced a brief outage, but said no flights were delayed as a result. Zoom In Icon Arrows pointing outwards FAA system failure created mass cancellations across the U.S. on Jan. 11th, 2023. FlightawareWednesday's FAA issue added to concern from Washington from both Republicans and Democrats, particularly about technology that the complex U.S. air system, the world's busiest, relies on. More than a third of Delta's and United's mainline flights were delayed, while about 50% of American's were running late.
Flight cancellations eased further on Monday but disruptions from severe winter weather across the U.S. lingered at the tail end of Christmas weekend. From Wednesday through Saturday, about a quarter of Southwest’s flights were canceled, and two-thirds were delayed, according to FlightAware data. On Monday, more than 1,700 flights were canceled and 2,200 more were delayed, down from nearly 3,200 canceled flights and 7,700 delayed U.S. flights on Sunday. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Alaska Airlines were among the other carriers affected by the weather. More than half of U.S.-based airlines’ flights arrived late from Thursday through Saturday, with delays averaging 81 minutes, according to FlightAware.
More than 3,000 flights were canceled early Friday as a bitter winter storm engulfed parts of the US. Disruptions are set to continue, the National Weather Service warned. The National Weather Service said early Friday that the US would experience a "historic winter storm" with more than 240 million people under winter weather warnings or advisories. Around a third of the flights to and from Denver International Airport were canceled and around a quarter to and from Chicago O'Hare International Airport were canceled, FlightAware data shows. Other airports, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Reagan National Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, had a large proportion of their flights delayed, although fewer than 10% were canceled.
American Airlines is dropping Mesa Air , citing concerns about its partner's financial and operational problems, an enormous blow to the regional airline that was struggling with increasing costs and the industry's pilot shortage. "American and Mesa agree the best way to address these concerns is to wind down our agreement." Large carriers like American, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines routinely contract regional airlines to fly many shorter routes and they account for roughly half of departures, though that number varies by airline. American plans to concentrate its flying with its wholly owned regional subsidiaries like Envoy and PSA, as well as an independent regional carrier SkyWest . The final Mesa flight for American will be on April 3 though American is slashing Mesa flights in March, Kerr said in his note.
A tornado touched down south of Shreveport, damaging several homes and knocking down trees and power lines, according to the sheriff's office. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth said there may have been 12 tornadoes, which will be confirmed by storm surveys. The severe weather in Texas occurred as a major winter storm was also pummeling Louisiana, with more than 10 million people under winter weather warnings or advisories across the Rockies and the northern Plains states. High winds toppled big-rig trucks Tuesday morning in Parker and Wise counties in Texas, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center. More than 18 million people from Texas to Mississippi are under threat of severe storms Tuesday, including tornadoes. In Mississippi, the Meridian Public School District – which serves over 4,900 students – announced they will be closed Wednesday due to the threat of severe weather. The Lawrence County and McComb School Districts also announced they were closing Wednesday due to the threat of severe weather. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency also noted the severe weather expected in the state and asked residents to prepare. “With severe weather expected throughout Mississippi tonight and tomorrow, please review your severe weather preparedness checklist to make sure you are ready for the storms,” the agency said in a message on Twitter.
Airport workers across the country are rallying and walking off the job Thursday to draw attention to their current working conditions and legislation that could improve them. Workers at 15 U.S. airports, including ones in Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and Phoenix, plan to participate in on-site rallies. Formal strikes — which could disrupt operations — are planned at Boston's Logan International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and the Newark Liberty International Airport. The rallies are in support of the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act, introduced in June by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. It would set a minimum wage of $15 for airport service workers, as well as ensure the workers have paid time off, holidays, adequate health care and other benefits.
Airport service workers are planning a day of action on December 8 to demand better conditions. Airport service workers are gearing up for a day of action, rallying, picketing, and marching to demand better conditions on the job. Airport service workers, such as janitors, security guards, and baggage handlers, will call on Congress to pass the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act. "Airport service workers all across this country help make our airports run. Now, airport service workers are the latest essential group to ask for more.
A fuel pump caught fire at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday, forcing a ground stop at one of the nation's busiest hubs, officials said. "A fire occurred this morning at the DFW Airport fuel farm located on the west side of the airport," according to an FAA statement. By 12:42 p.m., DFW said the fuel pump was working again — but that overall operations would still be behind schedule for much of the day. "The airlines’ fuel contractor has restored operations at their facility, and they are in the process of sending fuel to aircraft," the airport statement said. DFW served 62.6 million passengers last year, making it the second-busiest airport with only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport handling more traffic, according to Airports Council International.
American Airlines pilots' union on Wednesday said its board of directors rejected a tentative agreement for a new contract, the latest in a series of setbacks in labor talks across major U.S. airlines. The Allied Pilots Association, which represents roughly 15,000 American Airlines pilots, said its board voted against the tentative deal 15-5. The rejection comes a day after United Airlines pilots turned down a deal that would have included roughly 15% raises. The Covid-19 pandemic had put labor talks on hold as airlines focused on making it through a massive drop in travel demand. "We cannot vote to approve a [tentative agreement] that does not adequately address the quality-of-life items of our line pilots," union representatives based at American's Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport hub said in a note to pilots before the vote.
