BEIJING, Dec 4 (Reuters) - The biggest pig breeders in China, consumer of fully half the world's pork, seem to have bitten off more than they can chew. More huge losses are expected next year, putting China's pig enterprises under pressure to slim down their breeding herds and sell off farms, many of which are sitting empty. But now, especially given the companies' high debt levels, the analyst said: "It's hard for them to borrow any money from the banks." That follows a 17% surge in the first nine months of this year at China's 15 big market-listed breeders even as they reported 200 billion yuan in combined net losses. China's agriculture ministry has warned of heavier losses for the sector in early 2024 than a year ago and urged pig producers to cut output.

To lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit: that's the most important factor, experts said. AdvertisementIf you want to lose weight, it can be confusing to know where to start. But do you need to count calories to lose weight? A balanced meal incudes carbs, protein, fat, and fiber. "But if someone has a healthy relationship with food, they really shouldn't have to be more precise than tracking calories, protein and fiber."

Vegan diets may lead to better heart health and slower aging, suggests a new study of twins. 22 pairs of twins tried either vegan or omnivore diets to control for factors like genetics. While vegan diets may be harder to stick to, you don't have to be strictly plant-based to benefit. One member of each pair of twins was randomly assigned a vegan diet, eating exclusively plant-based foods with no meat, eggs, dairy, or other animal products. However, the vegan participants self-reported that they weren't as happy with their food, which could account for the extra weight loss.

The jury ruled last week that the egg producers used various means to limit the domestic supply of eggs to increase the price of products during the 2000s. The damages verdict was reached Friday in the Northern District of Illinois. According to federal antitrust law, the damages are automatically tripled, bringing the total to over $53 million. Court documents on the verdict were not readily available Friday evening, but statements from the manufacturers' attorney and one of the egg producers confirmed a total of about $17.7 million. Email messages sent to the United Egg Producers and United States Egg Marketers representatives were not immediately returned Friday.

MOSCOW (AP) — The shelves at Moscow supermarkets are full of fruit and vegetables, cheese and meat. But many of the shoppers look at the selection with dismay as inflation makes their wallets feel empty. The bank now forecasts inflation for the full year, as well as next year, to be about 7.5%. Maxim Blant, a Russian economy analyst based in Latvia, sees that as an indication that prices will continue to rise sharply. That keeps the cost of imports high, even as import possibilities shrink due to Western sanctions.

CNN —Eating higher amounts of ultraprocessed food raises the risk of being diagnosed with multimorbidity, or having multiple chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, a new study found. “This paper reports a 9% increase in risk of multimorbidity to be associated with higher intake of ultraprocessed food,” Sanders said in a statement. In the United States, a 2019 study estimated some 71% of the food supply may be ultraprocessed. Sugary and artificially-flavored drinks and ultraprocessed meats like hot dogs were significantly linked to the development of ccancer and other disease. When ultraprocessed foods were examined by subgroups, not all appeared to be associated with developing multiple chronic conditions, said lead author Reynalda Córdova, a postdoctoral student in pharmaceutical, nutritional and sport sciences at the University of Vienna.

Foods that improve brain function and mood
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( Andrea Kane | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Each episode will focus on one of those states — the distracted brain, the frightened brain, the depressed brain and others — to spotlight what is going on in our heads and how it affects our bodies. But it’s not so easy to know what to eat for brain health, or even how to measure it. Many of us have been told that foods such as blueberries, salmon, nuts and leafy greens are so-called brain foods. Nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo has built a career around figuring out which foods improve brain function and positively influence the way we feel. What can you do to nourish your brain and boost your mood?

CNN —Virtually absent from most present-day Western diets, seaweed and aquatic plants were once a staple food for ancient Europeans, an analysis of molecules preserved in fossilized dental plaque has found. Previously when researchers uncovered evidence of seaweed, they explained its presence as a fuel, food wrapping or fertilizer. In Europe, by the 18th century, seaweed was regarded as a famine food or only suitable for animal feed. And of those, 26 samples revealed that seaweed or aquatic plants had been on the menu. The scientists said they hoped that their research would highlight the potential for including more seaweeds and freshwater plants in present-day diets.

CNN —Eating greater amounts of ultraprocessed food and drinks, especially if those items are artificially sweetened, may be linked to the development of depression, according to a new study. Ultraprocessed foods include hot dogs, sausages, French fries, sodas, store-bought cookies, cakes, candies, ice cream and many foods containing artificial sweeteners. For one, there is a known link between ultraprocessed foods and chronic inflammation, Chan said. For example, studies have linked ultraprocessed foods colorectal cancer in men and heart disease and early death in both men and women. In addition, the study is observational, which means that researchers can only find an association between the onset of depression and the intake of ultraprocessed foods.

Simply Good Foods ' diverse product offering could provide it an edge over market competitors, according to Morgan Stanley. The firm upgraded Simply Good Foods to an overweight rating from equal-weight on Monday, simultaneously bumping up its price target to $40 from $37. Shares of the food and beverage company have plunged almost 11% since the start of the year, creating an "attractive buying opportunity," analyst Pamela Kaufman wrote. The analyst also cited Simply Good Foods' above-average topline growth within the packaged food industry. "SMPL's solid topline growth outlook is an increasingly scarce asset in a group that is facing slowing topline growth and should support its valuation premium," she said.

Biodiversity credits could be key to funding the conservation of the Earth’s ecosystems, but setting up a functioning market to buy and sell these payment tokens won’t be easy. The World Economic Forum is working on bringing together stakeholders, but admits that a scaled-up market is still some way in the future. It follows the lead of so-called voluntary carbon credits that allow firms to buy credits to offset their own emissions. Those global carbon credit markets are now worth some $2 billion, up from $200 million five years ago, according to environmental-finance data provider Ecosystem Marketplace. “I feel a bit of ‘carbon envy’ when I look at the carbon markets,” Cornell’s Tobin said, noting that biodiversity markets lack a universal metric that can apply to every project, unlike carbon markets where each credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide.

An Easy, Summery Tomato Pasta That’s Ready for Fall
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( Alexa Weibel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The recipe involves, essentially, three simple steps: Boiling the pasta, roasting ingredients on sheet pans, then tossing them all together. Because deliciousness often hinges on attention to detail, you’ll collect some of the starchy pasta water to scrape up the caramelized bits, or sucs, on the bottom of your baking sheets. Finally, you’ll toss the sauce with the pasta, vigorously dispersing the tomatoes and coating the crisp beans and filling your noodles’ nooks. You may be tempted to cut down on the precious pool of olive oil that this recipe requires, but do try to resist. Built with budget in mind, this simple pasta wouldn’t taste quite so lavish without it.

The impact of new weight loss treatments is being felt well beyond the health-care industry . During the second quarter, which beat expectations , shoppers were still focused on health and wellness, CEO Doug McMillon said Thursday. Some companies already bar weight loss medications from their insurance plans to keep costs down. Executives said it was tied to an increase in specialty drug use for weight loss and diabetes. Eli Lilly's Mounjaro hasn't yet been approved for weight loss, though some people are taking it off label for that reason.

Groups connected to the meat industry have said for years that plant-based meats aren't healthy. But it also counters one of the most common criticisms of plant-based meats from the animal meat industry – that these products are highly processed and unhealthy to eat. The Center has ties to the meat industry, according to Fast Company. In its own ads and messaging, the Center said that plant-based meat was "ultra-processed" and that the products posed health risks. The ad comes as Beyond Meat, Impossible, and other plant-based meat makers deal with a slump in sales.

Why Americans are obsessed with peanut butter
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Natalie Rice | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +9 min
Skippy was the leading peanut butter brand in the U.S. until 1980, a title that now belongs to Jif. Pond, that became the first brand to commercially develop peanut butter in 1920, sparking the way we eat peanut butter today. "We've launched certain innovations specifically in Asian markets to help enable that type of cooking use for peanut butter. Domestically, Americans eat an average of 4.25 pounds of peanut butter per capita, a figure that increased temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the National Peanut Board. As the family came together in the middle of the day, we saw that it introduced this love and affection for peanut butter to children who will hopefully carry that love and affection for peanut butter into [their] lifetime," he added.
