CNN —A British Airways flight from London to Tel Aviv made an abrupt U-turn shortly before it was due land in the Israeli city on Wednesday as the airline canceled all flights to the destination amid safety concerns. The airline said it had halted services to and from Tel Aviv as of late Wednesday. “Safety is always our highest priority and following the latest assessment of the situation, we’re suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv,” it said in a statement to CNN. “We continue to monitor the situation in the region closely.” British Airways did not say when flights would resume. What other airlines are doingNumerous other international airlines with connections to Tel Aviv have suspended services as attacks have escalated.

The airline was one of a handful of carriers still operating into Israel. Others, including the big three U.S. operators--Delta, American and United--have already scrapped flying into the country despite no formal closure of the airspace from either the Federal Aviation Administration or its European counterpart. BA's flight from London to Tel Aviv on Wednesday had already begun its approach when the crew decided to turn the plane around. The flight, which typically takes about five hours, is currently over mainland Europe on its way back to London, according to Flightradar24.

U.S. air carriers United Airlines (UAL.O) and American Airlines (AAL.O) suspended direct flights to Israel after the Federal Aviation Administration urged airlines to exercise caution. Many European airlines have also cancelled flights. Norwegian Air (NAS.OL) cancelled its flights from Copenhagen and Stockholm to Tel Aviv this week and Ryanair (RYA.I) cancelled flights through to Wednesday. Lufthansa (LHAG.DE), also among the airlines most exposed to Israel according to Goodbody, cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv through Monday. Hainan Airlines (600221.SS), the only Chinese airline to fly between China and Israel, and other airlines flying from Hong Kong and South Korea cancelled flights to Tel Aviv.
