CNN —More than 1.5 million years ago, two different species of ancient human crossed paths on a lakeshore, perhaps locking eyes with each other. The researchers found 12 hominin tracks in a line, suggesting they were made by the same individual. “There’s one long trackway with 12 (hominin) footprints in it. We hypothesize that those more humanlike footprints are more likely Homo erectus just because the rest of their anatomy is so human,” Hatala said. Shown here is a fossil footprint hypothesized to have been created by Homo erectus, a species of ancient human.

Federal ethics laws require those senior government jobs in the Cabinet and beyond to divest their individual stock holdings, lest anyone be tempted to abuse their position of power to juice their personal investments. “The rule of thumb is, recuse or divest,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president for communications at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. “The more complex your assets are, the harder it can be to divest from them. Although the president isn’t subject to conflict of interest laws, most presidents have adhered to them anyway to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Given Trump’s own disregard for ethics rules, it’s not clear how, or even whether, his Justice Department would enforce the criminal conflict of interest laws that his Cabinet picks are subject to.

Kinga Krzeminska | Moment | Getty ImagesIreland goes to the polls on Nov. 29, with center-right parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael once again expected to form the nucleus of the country's next government. On the flipside, there are concerns in Dublin that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will look to clamp down on U.S. companies paying taxes in Ireland, instead of in America. Political angleThe country's two biggest parties look once again on track to form a government, despite some travails for Fine Gael as the campaign winds down. The latest Irish Times/Ipsos B&A poll of Nov. 25 shows support for Fine Gael falling six points to 19% over the last two weeks, while Fianna Fáil's backing now stands at 21%. It is nevertheless unclear what policy changes can be expected, given the sway that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are likely to have in a potential government.

This surge means that coffee prices across the board — from fancy beverages made from Arabica beans to robusta-fueled instant coffee — are almost sure to cost more for the everyday consumer. On Wednesday, the global benchmark for arabica coffee — March 2025 arabica coffee futures — ended 4.6% higher on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) at $3.2305 per pound, after hitting their highest level since 1977. Food giant Nestlé, the world's largest coffee maker, said last week that it will hike prices to deal with the rise in coffee prices. Coffee drinkers are already paying more: Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show coffee prices for urban consumers rose sharply from July 2021 to February 2023. Speculators jumping into the coffee marketGiven the confluence of factors pushing up coffee prices, non-commercial speculators, such as funds, are joining the market.

Each time, when the West finally accepted Ukraine’s requests, Russia’s most catastrophic threats did not materialize. Although Putin said the attack was “a response from our side” to the Biden administration’s decision on longer-range weapons, Russia has not needed a pretext for such strikes in the past. By providing Ukraine with ATACMS but only allowing it to strike parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia, “we sent Russia the message: ‘You know what? The decision to fire slightly longer-range Western weapons is a difference of degree, not of kind. By law, Russia considers these territories its own, and warned of dire consequences if Ukraine targeted them with Western weaponry.

They calculated each person’s Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) score, with higher scores denoting more regular sleepers. The team then tracked incidents of cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure and stroke over eight years and found that irregular sleepers were 26% more likely to suffer one of these events than those with a regular sleep cycle. Irregular sleep means the variations in the time someone goes to sleep and wakes up. However, it was an observational study and, as such, can only establish a link rather than cause and effect: we can’t know for sure if irregular sleep patterns caused the increased risk. But even those irregular sleepers who got the recommended amount of sleep had a higher risk of suffering a major cardiovascular event.

“Frozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening,” a TSA spokesperson confirmed to CNN by email. What to do if your frozen bottle starts to melt? Ultimately, the best advice is to not pack any foods or frozen liquid items into your carry-on luggage that you would be upset to throw away. Some travelers question why someone would bother to freeze a bottle of water before their flight given most airports now have free refilling stations. “While I’ve never personally brought a frozen water bottle through security, there are times when this travel hack makes sense,” he told CNN.

AdvertisementThe rate of AI model improvement appears to be slowing, but some tech leaders say there is no wall. A fierce debate over whether improvements in AI models have hit their limit has taken hold in recent weeks, forcing several CEOs to respond. Others, including Marc Andreessen, say AI models aren't getting noticeably better and are all converging to perform at roughly similar levels. His first major global brouhaha since winning reelection posed the following questions that will help define the character of his second term. There’s no guarantee that Canada, Mexico and China will back down immediately. Trump’s trade war rhetoric is a reminder that in his worldview, the United States has few friends — only adversaries against whom it can choose to win or lose. The prime minister therefore has a huge incentive to avoid a trade war that could cause havoc in the Canadian economy. Initial reaction to Trump’s broadside against Canada and Mexico suggests that many observers see his outburst as a negotiating tactic.

— Thanks, Marek We do two things right off the bat after identifying a stock that we might want to buy. Remember, as an investor, you want to know every little aspect of every company whose stock you buy or think about buying. Financial statements In addition to understanding a company from a high level, we can't take a position before analyzing the financial statements and getting a sense of the health of the company in question. All three are incredibly important, however, of the three, the balance sheet is going to be the one to look at first. Knowing what shape the balance sheet is in gives you a better sense of the company's outlook.

EasyJet on Tuesday said it made a record £3.59 billion ($4.5 billion) from charging passengers for flight add-ons such as extra baggage in the full year to October, as the budget airline's CEO criticized a recent Spanish fine over the practice. Many airlines have stripped back what they include in their flight fares in recent years, instead relying on cashing in more from individual add-ons, as competition to offer ultra-low cost base fares intensifies. "We completely disagree with that, we think it goes completely against European law and European law's going to trump that," easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Tuesday. "It's a highly unfair idea that you should not be able to offer products and services targeted for those people who want to use that. Demand for AI agents is giving birth to a new class of startups and VCs hungry to invest in them. It was a topic of conversation at the Evident AI Symposium in New York on Thursday. To take AI agents a step further, technologists and startup investors are fueling a shift to so-called multi-agent systems that coordinate several AI agents to complete more complex tasks more autonomously. Well, that's still being worked out, according to a number of tech executives at the Evident AI Symposium Thursday. Heitsenrether, speaking at the Evident AI conference, told the audience that, over time, she expects AI to be seamlessly embedded in an employee's workflow.
