CNN —Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was ejected from Wednesday’s 120-118 win over the Detroit Pistons for “two unsportsmanlike technical fouls,” before the ‘Greek Freak’ gave some fans quite the unique experience. He had received the initial technical foul in the first quarter for using profanity towards the referees. “And he was ejected from the game, per rule, because two unsportsmanlike technical fouls, you are ejected from the game.”The official National Basketball Association (NBA) rulebook says: “If a player blatantly taunts an opponent, a technical foul shall be assessed. The ejection also drew headlines given the NBA’s recent commitment to ensuring its star players are on the court as much as possible. Before his ejection, Antetokounmpo contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Global Payments (GPN.N) raised its annual profit forecast and beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter profit on Tuesday, as strong consumer spending drove growth in its merchant-focused business. Global Payments now expects annual adjusted profit of between $10.39 and $10.45 per share, up from a prior range of $10.35 to $10.44 per share. That has helped companies like Global Payments, whose fees are strongly correlated to spending volumes. Peer Fiserv (FI.N) last week also raised its full-year profit forecast after its quarterly earnings nearly doubled. Excluding one-off items, Global Payments earned $2.75 per share in the third quarter.

Morning Bid: Big Tech reports as bond yields recoil

The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

When it comes to picking stocks, Hannah Gooch-Peters of asset management firm Sanlam Investments UK avoids chasing trends. She said she believes investors need to look beyond the "Magnificent Seven," referring to Apple , Amazon , Alphabet , Meta , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla — tech stocks that have made massive gains this year. Sanlam's $5 billion-plus Global High Quality Fund invests in global stocks with a "high quality bias." The companies her firm picks have rather low capital expenditure as a percentage of their sales, she said. It also has a "mortgage-signing technology service which is "really, really exciting," she said.

The market has been a fertile stock picking environment for mutual funds and hedge funds this year, and Goldman Sachs said it found a handful of stocks loved by both cohorts. It then compiled the "Hedge Fund VIP basket," consisting of 50 stocks that most frequently appear among the 10 largest holdings of hedge funds, and the "Mutual Fund Overweight basket," consisting of 50 stocks in which mutual funds are the most overweight. Goldman found that there are six "shared favorites" among hedge funds and mutual funds last quarter, including Cigna , Fiserv , Uber , Workday , Visa and Mastercard . An equal-weighted list of shared favorites has generated an annualized return of 14%, compared to 13% for the S & P 500. That said, both hedge funds and mutual funds benefited from the broader cyclical rally, given their increased exposure to cyclical sectors such as energy stocks, Goldman said.

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis listens to a question from the audience at a campaign town hall meeting in Newport, New Hampshire, U.S., August 19, 2023. In Trump's absence, candidates are expected to launch a fusillade of attacks on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as competitors try to displace him as Trump's top challenger, according to strategists and aides to rival campaigns. DeSantis is seen as vulnerable after a summer slide in the polls, which have left him languishing more than 30 points behind Trump in the race. "He's going to be a punching bag," said Brian Darling, a Republican strategist and former senior aide to U.S. Still, Trump's no-show doesn't mean he won't be a major presence in the debate, which kicks off at the Fiserv Forum at 9 p.m.

Here are six takeaways from the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate:Taking shots at RamaswamyWith Trump absent from Wednesday’s debate, the the early target of most of the debate participants was not DeSantis or South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott or any candidate who has ever held elected office before. DeSantis clarified: “Well, statewide.” Asked if he would support a federal six-week abortion ban, DeSantis talked about his electoral victory in Florida. And no one clearly stated they would sign a six-week federal abortion ban – even if they’d approved such laws as governors. At one end of the spectrum stood Haley, who sparred with Pence over the possibility of passing a federal ban. Ahead of the debate, Republican strategists argued that this was the approach Scott wanted to take because it’s his authentic self.

WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Eight top Republican presidential contenders will take part on Wednesday in the first debate of the 2024 primary election cycle. All major Republican candidates will be present with one major exception: former President Donald Trump. They are also required to sign a pledge certifying that they will support the eventual Republican nominee. In some cases, during previous primary campaigns, poor performances have sunk candidacies, while strong performances have launched minor candidates into the top tier. Several more are likely, with an October debate likely to occur in Alabama, according to a person familiar with the operations of the Republican National Committee.
