What We Know About the Global Outage

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, are being disrupted by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users. In many countries, flights have been grounded, workers couldn’t access their systems and, in some cases, customers haven’t been able to make card payments in stores. A series outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark. The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are designed to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines are among the airlines that have issued ground stops for their aircraft due to communication issues, Reuters reported. A spokesperson for Singapore's Changi Airport told BI: "Due to a global outage affecting IT systems of many organizations, the check-in process for some airlines at Changi Airport is being managed manually." On Thursday night, Frontier Airlines issued a ground stop order, saying in a statement: "flight operations are currently being impacted by a major Microsoft technical outage." On Friday, the cybersecurity firm experienced a major disruption following an issue with a software update. CrowdStrike is a cybersecurity vendor that develops software to help companies detect and block hacks. Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket fails during routine mission

The launch vehicle carried 20 satellites for SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already operates via more than 6,000 satellites that have been deployed via dozens of launches. “During tonight’s Falcon 9 launch of Starlink, the second stage engine did not complete its second burn. As a result, the Starlink satellites were deployed into a lower than intended orbit,” according to a statement from SpaceX. Musk added that the Starlink satellites were deployed into orbit, but they may be too near Earth to remain there for long. It’s not clear what this mishap means for the future of SpaceX’s Falcon 9.

SpaceX Rocket Fails, Breaking Apart in Orbit
  + stars: | 2024-07-12 | by ( Kenneth Chang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sustained a rare but catastrophic failure Thursday night, disintegrating in orbit during the deployment of the company’s latest batch of Starlink internet satellites. In a posting on X two hours after launch, Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX, reported that the rocket had suffered a “RUD” — rapid unscheduled disassembly — while in orbit. It remained uncertain whether SpaceX could salvage the 20 Starlink satellites jeopardized by the rocket malfunction. This is the first failure of a Falcon 9 rocket since 2016, when one exploded on the launchpad during the loading of propellants for an engine firing test. Between that explosion, which destroyed an Israeli satellite, and the malfunction on Thursday, SpaceX had enjoyed a streak of more than 300 successful Falcon 9 missions.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 is pictured launching satellites to orbit in space after it lifted off from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, U.S., in this screenshot obtained from a handout video released on July 12, 2024. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is grounded, pending an incident investigation, after an inflight failure — a rare misfire for the company's workhorse vehicle. The mission, known as "Starlink Group 9-3," launched from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday evening and was carrying 20 satellites bound for low Earth orbit. But the rocket's upper second stage failed to reignite its engine as planned and was destroyed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed. Falcon 9 is grounded until the Federal Aviation Administration signs off on SpaceX's investigation of the incident, the federal regulator confirmed.

But they may not yet be enough to make a difference on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated in a discussion this week on what Ukraine needs, comparing the jets to the US-made Abrams tanks that Ukraine got last fall. "The problem with F-16," the Ukrainian president said, "is the number and the dates." The US sent only 31 M1A1 Abrams in total, and they were delivered to Ukraine months after British and German tanks. Washington-based startup Gravitics has signed a $125 million contract to expand Axiom Space's planned space station, the latest deal in the burgeoning private market for orbiting habitats. Axiom is one of several companies building private space stations as NASA plans for the International Space Station to end its time in orbit. Already, Axiom has modules of its space station being built by Italian aerospace contractor Thales Alenia. CNN —A Chinese rocket crashed after being accidentally launched during a ground test Sunday, its company Space Pioneer said in a statement. The crash happened when the first stage of the Tianlong-3 rocket detached from its launch pad during a test, due to structural failure. “Due to the structural failure of the connection between the rocket body and the test platform, the first-stage rocket was separated from the launch pad,” Space Pioneer, also known as Beijing Tianbing Technology, said. Space Pioneer, a leading company in the commercial rocket sphere, specializes in liquid-propellant rockets. In April 2023, it successfully launched its Tianlong-2 rocket, making the company China’s first commercial launch operator to send a liquid carrier rocket into space and successfully enter orbit, according to state media.

CNN —Forecasters will soon be able to see real-time mapping of lightning activity on Earth and keep a closer eye on solar storms unleashed by the sun thanks to a new weather satellite. The weather satellite lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:26 p.m. What sets GOES-U apart from other satellites is that it’s carrying a new capability to keep an eye on space weather. The coronagraph will provide continuous observations of the solar corona, or the hot outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, which is where space weather events originate, said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA’s Office of Space Weather Observations. The instrument’s capabilities will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue warnings and watches one to four days in advance and “mark a new chapter in space weather observatoions,” Talaat said.

Spaceflight veterans Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station aboard the Starliner on June 6. It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months. But the situation makes for a moment of uncertainty and embarrassment that joins a long list of similar blunders by the Boeing Starliner program, which is already years behind schedule.
