Richard Behar Courtesy: Lizzie CohenYou probably haven't heard Bernie Madoff's name in awhile, but that doesn't mean the infamous fraudster's story is over, or the pain he inflicted. Irving Picard, an 83-old court-appointed trustee, still spends his days trying to claw back money from the those who benefitted from Madoff's Ponzi scheme, and to reduce the staggering losses of others. In prison, he'd typically wake up in his cell at around 4 a.m., make coffee in bed with an instant hot water machine, then read, or listen to NPR until breakfast. Biscuit Basin – located about 2 miles northwest of the famed Old Faithful geyser in Wyoming – was shuttered for the rest of the summer out of concern for visitor safety, according to park officials. This map shows the major thermal features in Biscuit Basin at Yellowstone National Park. Officials say Grand Loop Road, which surrounds Biscuit Basin and other notable sites in the park, remains open to vehicles. Biscuit Basin and other popular geysers have experienced similar explosions in the past, officials said. Additionally, a small hydrothermal explosion occurred from Wall Pool, in Biscuit Basin, in 2009, according to officials.

“Hydrothermal explosions are violent and dramatic events resulting in the rapid ejection of boiling water, steam, mud, and rock fragments,” according to the US Geological Survey. “Porkchop Geyser, in Norris Geyser Basin, experienced an explosion in 1989, and a small event in Norris Geyser Basin was recorded by monitoring equipment on April 15, 2024. Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface.”Large hydrothermal explosions occur on an average of every 700 years, the USGS says. “Although large hydrothermal explosions are rare events on a human time scale, the potential for additional future events of the sort in Yellowstone National Park is not insignificant. Based on the occurrence of large hydrothermal explosion events over the past 16,000 years, an explosion large enough to create a 100-(meter)- (328-ft-) wide crater might be expected every few hundred years,” it added.

The results kind of surprised me, but I'm glad I know how to make the best frozen lasagna. The oven is still my go-to method, but I'd use my air fryer again. I wanted the air fryer to be my favorite, largely because it's the quickest method. The toaster oven was also a fine cooking method, but I don't see why I'd use it instead of my standard oven. Overall, the biggest lesson I learned is that there are no circumstances where you should ever microwave a frozen lasagna.

Before I get to President Biden, let me tell you about my love for a different presidential candidate. In 1972, when I was 13 years old, I knocked on doors to canvass for George McGovern, the Democratic senator who wanted to end the Vietnam War. When more sober-minded Democrats pushed to nominate former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who had the virtue of being electable, the McGovern faithful fought back and Humphrey’s bid collapsed. At the time of the 1972 Democratic National Convention, McGovern was down 20 points in a Harris poll. But we cheered McGovern and believed in him — until Nixon won that November by a 23-point landslide, carrying 49 states.

Ron DeSantis, bestowing Mr. DeSantis with the brute-force promotional heft that only he could deliver. But on Tuesday, Mr. Murdoch, the recently retired global media titan, was in Milwaukee to take his place among the rank-and-file Republican faithful. And with that, he became one of the most prominent one-time Trump detractors to line up behind the former president and join a convention that has doubled as a resounding show of Republican unity. Mr. Murdoch, 93, has not been a regular at conventions. But his appearance is also another extraordinary turn in his contorted relationship with Mr. Trump, whose unshakable hold over the audience of Mr. Murdoch’s major cable network, Fox News, has kept Mr. Murdoch yoked to the former president for the better part of the past decade.

The majority of people with checking accounts (73%) take advantage of the option, according to a 2023 Bankrate.com survey. But if regulatory costs go up for banks, free services like checking may go away, at least if they follow Chase’s lead. Marianne Lake, the head of Chase Bank, told the Wall Street Journal last week that Chase might stop offering free checking and other free banking services. “Consumer banking is predicated on banks providing services for free to consumers such as checking accounts, debit cards and electronic bill paying. Or, if those costs do rise, maybe some banks might decide for various reasons not to eliminate free checking.

Post-debate panicAfter a bruising 90-minute debate that underscored President Biden’s single-biggest weakness — concern about his age — Democratic donors exchanged panicked texts and emails with one question: What’s Plan B? The 81-year-old Biden’s halting, shaky performance against a confident (if sometimes misleading) showing by Donald Trump has set off alarm among Democrats with just seven weeks before the Democratic National Convention and four months before the November election. Some party faithful who were suppressing their doubts about Biden are now privately lobbying Democratic leaders and scouring rule books to figure out how to change the presidential ticket. “Disaster,” one unnamed Democratic donor told CNBC after the debate, reflecting the mood among the party’s moneyed class. Other reactions included “absolute train wreck” and “game over.” “Do we have time to put somebody else in there?” Mark Buell, a well-known Democratic donor, told The Times.

Even as the court is sometimes finding wider-than-expected majorities for relatively limited outcomes, the nine justices are regularly in conflict over the meaning of decisions. A number of lower-profile cases have also sparked deep doctrinal divisions, even when the final vote count is lopsided. “It does seem, at least anecdotally, unusual to have this many separate opinions in cases with relatively lower stakes,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. The Supreme Court earlier this month tossed out an appeal from anti-abortion doctors challenging expanded access to the abortion pill mifepristone. At large events all over the world, the scenes of extreme heat stress are starting to look familiar. And lines of the faithful — whether they seek religion, music, ballot boxes or sport — sweating under slivers of shade. And in many ways, that heavy toll was just the latest sign that crowd control and heat waves fueled by climate change are on a dangerous collision course. During India’s recent election, dozens of poll workers died on the job. Even as heat kills more people today than any other extreme weather event, there is still a dangerous cultural lag.

More than 1,300 people died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, Saudi authorities announced Sunday. All but 31 of them were unauthorized pilgrims, according to two officials in Cairo. Egypt has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said. Those agencies left pilgrims in limbo in Mecca and the holy sites in scorching heat, the newspaper said. AP journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat, especially on the second and third days of the Hajj.
