United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain greets UAW autoworkers, at the Stellantis Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, to mark the beginning of contract negotiations in Sterling Heights, Michigan, U.S. July 12, 2023. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 9 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union is leveraging the power of social media to attract public support in demanding substantial wage increases for hourly workers as a deadline looms with the Detroit Three automakers. On Friday, he said the UAW was prepared to strike all three companies if no deals are reached. "What we've seen is the new president of the UAW taking an offer from the automakers and throwing it in a wastebasket on social media. This week, the UAW released a video in an effort to save a shuttered Stellantis plant in the northern Illinois town of Belvidere.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union on Friday rejected wage and benefit offers from all three Detroit automakers, raising tensions just six days before a strike deadline for 146,000 employees. Union President Shawn Fain told workers in a Facebook Live appearance that he filed proposals from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis in a wastebasket. Stellantis offered wage increases in each year of a new four-year contract totaling 14.5%. To handle inflation, Ford offered cost of living pay that he called severely deficient, while GM and Stellantis offered lump sums. All companies kept tiers of wages for factory workers but lowered the number of years needed to reach full pay, he said.

Unlike prior union leaders, Fain is attempting to negotiate with all three automakers at once, refusing to select a "target" company to focus on while extending deals at the others. He's also been far more confrontational with the automakers compared to previous union leaders, at times launching personal attacks on executives. "I think there's a reasonable chance they strike Stellantis first and then give a couple more days for Ford and GM to give a better offer." The union could use that work stoppage as a warning to GM and Ford to finalize their deals, he said. DETROIT — United Auto Workers has filed unfair labor practice charges against automakers General Motors and Stellantis to the National Labor Relations Board for not bargaining with the union in good faith or a timely manner, UAW President Shawn Fain said Thursday night. The union did not file a complaint against Ford Motor , as Fain said the company responded to the UAW's demands with a counterproposal he heavily criticized. "GM and Stellantis' willful refusal to bargain in good faith is not only insulting and counterproductive, it's also illegal," Fain said during a Facebook Live. "That's why today, our union filed unfair labor practice charges, or ULPs, against both GM and Stellantis with the National Labor Relations Board." Regarding Ford's recent proposal, Fain called it "concessionary."

DETROIT – United Auto Workers members overwhelmingly granted union leaders authorization to strike during ongoing contract negotiations with General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis , if warranted. That's in line with support during negotiations four years ago, when 96% of workers who voted supported authorization for a strike. The "strike authorization vote" is part of the union's constitution and viewed as a procedural step in the negotiations. Our goal is to bargain good agreements for our members," UAW President Shawn Fain said Friday during a Facebook Live. The UAW president has rattled automakers with combative rhetoric, delivered via Facebook Live videos, including one where he threw contract proposals from Stellantis into a trash can. U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday urged the automakers and the union to come to a "fair agreement." The three automakers have signaled such a move would add billions in liabilities and make their unionized U.S. operations uncompetitive. Fain said the union's analysis concluded that the automakers could fund defined-benefit plans for roughly the same cost as current 401(k) savings plans. Walkouts at the Detroit Three could benefit Tesla (TSLA.O) and other non-union automakers including Toyota Motor (7203.T), Honda Motor (7267.T), Nissan Motor (7201.T) and Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Anderson said.

He said the union has no plans to extend the current contracts to allow for bargaining to continue without a strike, which was previously common practice. The leader of the United Auto Workers on Tuesday adamantly defended lofty demands for the union's members who work for the Detroit automakers, while calling recent contract proposals from Stellantis "trash." Fain laid out reported changes to the contract involving holiday and vacation days, absenteeism, 401(k) contributions, profit-sharing payments and other proposals that he described as "concessionary." "Stellantis' proposals are a slap in the face. Contract talks between the union and automakers usually begin in earnest in July ahead of mid-September expirations of the previous four-year agreements. Fain also criticized Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares for not meeting with union leaders to open the negotiations.
