How to repel mosquitoes, according to science
  + stars: | 2023-06-24 | by ( Kate Golembiewski | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Here’s the lowdown on how mosquitoes hunt us, what attracts them, and what scientists recommend for keeping them at bay. The science of mosquito bitesMost of the time, mosquitoes drink plant nectars and juices, and even help pollinate flowers. “How attractive you think you are to mosquitoes might not necessarily correlate with how attractive you actually are to the mosquitoes,” McMeniman said. The itchiness and discomfort from mosquito bites come later when the perpetrator is no longer at risk of getting swatted. No silver bullet exists to protect yourself from mosquito bites, but get a good bug spray and reapply it as needed.

As a high school teacher, I make all my graduating seniors understand how to handle stress. I then teach them how to make a plan to move forward through the stress. Through my years of experience with students, I've realized that the most important thing I can teach seniors is how to listen to and manage their stress. I've learned that students' stress needs to be validatedTheir stress is not something to just bulldoze over or pretend doesn't exist. I also make sure my students understand how to handle their stress and move forwardWhen I teach students to pause, listen, and validate, I notice they then learn how to proceed.

The search area for the missing submersible stretches about two times the size of Connecticut on the surface and goes down as deep as two-and-a-half miles, according to Frederick. We need a miracle – but miracles do happen,” oceanographer and water search expert David Gallo told CNN. However, it remains unclear whether the noises are from the missing submersible, Frederick said. David Marquet, a former submarine captain, described Wednesday what he imagines the five passengers are experiencing in the Titan submersible. OceanGate Expeditions strayed from industry norms by declining a voluntary, rigorous safety review of the vessel, according to an industry leader.

How to practice progressive muscle relaxation
  + stars: | 2023-06-11 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Progressive muscle relaxation is a powerful mind-body relaxation technique that can help you melt away that tension and relieve the stress and anxiety that started it. Progressive muscle relaxation has been shown in numerous studies to help relieve anxiety and stress, and facilitate sleep for those who are highly stressed, including Covid-19 patients and burn victims. This feature makes progressive muscle relaxation an accessible mind-body relaxation practice for anyone, even kids, who might struggle with the inactive aspect of meditation or visualization practices. During this practice, your breath serves as the link between your mind and body, coordinating with each muscle contraction and release. Inhale as you flex your wrists, pointing your fingers downward so that you feel your forearm muscles contract.

The debt deal clears the HouseThe debt-ceiling deal is a step closer to becoming law after its breezy passage in the House last night, making the prospect of a U.S. default all the more remote. Investors expressed relief, sending global markets and U.S. stock futures higher this morning. The bill now heads to a final vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The House vote was always seen as riskier, but the bill’s passage in the upper house is by no means a fait accompli. And some fiscal hawks in his party see the deal as a betrayal.

There is a transcendent quality to the gardens of the Dutch designer Piet Oudolf, which overtake us with the sense that we have arrived at a place where we would like — and very much need — to spend more time. Drawn into the complex textural mosaic of muted colors, we can exhale. And yet, Mr. Oudolf is quick to point out, his work is the art and craft of garden making. It is not ecological landscape restoration. His medium is naturalistic, yes, but it is not nature.

Crude oil continued to tick up, but not at Monday's pace, with Brent a little over $85. Money markets lay 2:1 odds for the Fed to hike by another quarter point over a pause at their next meeting in a month from now. By contrast, the European Central Bank is seen as almost certain to tighten by a quarter point at its meeting around the same time. The Reserve Bank of Australia, for its part, decided to press pause on its year-long rate hiking campaign - as most economists had predicted - amid signs that inflation may have peaked. China has been for the first time keeping at least one nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine constantly at sea, according to a Pentagon report.

It was a long-term deal so I don't think we have to confront that yet, but it's gone terrifically for us, actually. If you don't want to compete, don't come in. Can you talk about the synergy with the Whitney Houston movie — she was a Sony Music artist — or "Gran Turismo," a Playstation game? Do you wish HBO Max's "The Last of Us," which is also based on a Sony Playstation game, had been a movie? A lot of big movies come out of it.
In addition to stress and lack of sleep, it can be caused by the immune system creating an inflammatory response in the brain. As a neuroscientist, I study the causes of brain fog and forgetfulness. Even if you think you're relaxed, your body may be physically tense (e.g., stiff neck, back or shoulder pain). Box breathing is a simple way to help calm your brain. More than that can lead to a depressed mood, and less than that doesn't give the brain enough time to rest and reset.
Professionals deal with work stress in many different ways, from morning walks to motivational mantras. But many people don't know that breathing exercises can also help regulate stress, release anger and reduce anxiety. And according to Zee Clarke, author of Black People Breathe and mindfulness & breathwork expert for BIPOC communities, they can also help professionals mitigate workplace burnout. According to Clarke, the squeeze and release technique is great for lessening that tension and releasing anger. This stress release practice takes less than a minute to do and helps combat anxiety.

Crypto advocate Samuel Armes had an eventful interview with the January 6 committee in July 2022. In the middle of being grilled about who authored the document, Armes ended up on the floor with a leg cramp and then bragged about how much weight he had just lifted. "Sorry, I'm cramping," Armes told Rep. Zoe Lofgren during the virtual interview, per the transcript released on December 23. He acknowledged in the interview with the committee that elements of his plan were used in the lengthier "1776 returns" document he was shown. "I ended up sharing it with her on a Google Drive," he told the committee, referring to Flores.

Economic worries have made this holiday season particularly stressful for some. The holiday season can bring out the absolute worst in some kids. Some parents welcome that break from structure, and that’s OK. “Parents get to decide what works and what doesn’t work with their family,” Dr. Naumburg said. “Gratitude and savoring are the opposite.”Dr. Kurtz recommended starting a simple gratitude practice early in the holiday season. As the holidays unfold, make an effort to savor the season, Dr. Kurtz said.
As a neuroscientist, I use three exercises that take just a few minutes to reset my nervous system and feel calm again:1. Take a deep, long inhale through your nose for five seconds and hold. Sigh a slow, long exhale through your mouth for six seconds. Let your head come back up to its neutral position and shift your eyes to look forward again. The half-salamander stimulates the vagus nerves — a system that controls your heart rate — and triggers a relaxation response in our body.

CNN —Smoking weed while being a tobacco smoker may increase damage to the respiratory system, a new study found. Scans from an additional 57 nonsmokers with no preexisting lung disease, chemotherapy or other history of lung damage were used as controls. Lung damage was greater in those who smoke marijuana and tobacco compared with tobacco-only smokers, a preliminary study found. “We just don’t know if it’s a synergistic effect between the marijuana and the tobacco versus the marijuana alone.”Irreversible damage? In addition, tobacco smokers quickly exhale, while marijuana smokers often inhale and hold their breath to maximize the high, she said.
