Liverpool deserved to lose, says Klopp
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 10 (Reuters) - Liverpool were second best in virtually all the decisive moments against Toulouse on Thursday and fully deserved their 3-2 Europa League defeat, manager Juergen Klopp said. "It was well deserved to lose because they won pretty much all the decisive challenges, battles," he told reporters. It was the second disappointing result in a week for Liverpool after Sunday's draw at Luton Town but Klopp said there had been no lack of intensity from his team. Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was denied a late equaliser due to handball, a decision Klopp protested with the referee. "I only saw the video back now and for me it's not a handball," Klopp said.

West Ham lost 2-1 away to the Greek side a fortnight ago but their win at the London Stadium put them level on nine points with second-placed Freiburg, who crushed bottom side Backa Topola 5-0. "If I was being honest, I don’t think we made enough chances or opportunities and I need to look to see why that was the case," West Ham manager David Moyes said. The West Ham fans then held their breath late on as the visitors nearly equalised when Mady Camara's close-range header struck the post when he should have scored. Marseille secured a second victory with their win in Athens thanks to goals from Chancel Mbemba and Ismaila Sarr. Arsenal cruise to 2-0 win against Sevilla

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a routine 2-0 defeat of Sevilla to take a big step towards qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds on Wednesday. Europa League champions Sevilla were desperately disappointing and managed only one shot on target, with the last kick of the game, as their last-16 hopes receded. Lens and PSV have five points while winless Sevilla are bottom with two points. Arsenal got their wish as the technology that caused Arteta's angst at Newcastle was redundant and Sevilla offered virtually nothing to cause alarm. "We knew we had to get three points and we did it," Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said.

NAPLES, Italy, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Union Berlin's David Fofana scored a second-half equaliser against the run of play to snatch a 1-1 Champions League draw at Napoli on Wednesday and snap a 12-game losing run, but it was not enough to keep the German side's knockout hopes alive. The draw left Napoli in second place in Group C on seven points, two behind leaders Real Madrid who face Braga, on three points, later on Wednesday. "This feels really good," said Union captain Christopher Trimmel. They did break the deadlock before halftime when a deflected shot bounced off Politano's chest and into the goal. Napoli had 18 corners to the Germans' five but despite late pressure and a string of chances they failed to score again.

Atalanta fans take detour to salute their ex-player Ilicic

Ex-players can come in for many different forms of treatment from their former fans, but Josip Ilicic, who spent five years at Atalanta, is still very much in the hearts of the club's supporters. Ilicic left the club in August, 2022, his contract terminated by mutual agreement, after the player had struggled for some time with mental health issues. Ilicic joined his former club NK Maribor a month after leaving Atalanta, and the fans from Bergamo arrived at the club's training ground on Thursday morning to surprise the 35-year-old Slovenian. Two buses arrived, carrying 120 fans who had left Italy at midnight, and there were handshakes, hugs and chants for the beloved player, and plenty of photos taken with a visibly emotional and happy Ilicic. The fans left him a present of the banner they had used on that farewell night in Bergamo last year, and Ilicic also confirmed he will be present at Atalanta's game with Sturm Graz later on Thursday night.
