CNN —Federal regulators granted SpaceX its long-awaited license to move forward with a fifth uncrewed test launch of Starship, the most powerful rocket system ever constructed. The FAA had been expected to hand down a license for this test launch weeks ago. SpaceX has also publicly denied reports that the company violated wastewater regulations with the deluge system, which SpaceX says uses potable water. A shelter-in-place advisory has been extended for an entire Georgia county Monday after chlorine was detected in the air, emitting from a chemical lab where there was a fire the day before. A chemical fire ignited on the roof of the BioLab plant in Conyers, Rockdale County at 5 a.m. Sunday after a sprinkler head malfunctioned “causing a mixture with a water-reactive chemical,” Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said. Rockdale County extended the shelter-in-place recommendation for residents in an early Monday morning update. Officials did not confirm the chemical involved in the release Sunday, but the county said air quality surveys conducted by the Environmental Protection Division and the Environmental Protection Agency detected chlorine in the air coming from the lab. The county also announced that all government facilities will be closed Monday, and advised businesses to close operations until the shelter-in-place is lifted.

Extreme temperatures are driving travelers to seek cooler destinations. From January to June 2024, flight searches increased 705% to Lapland, Finland, according to Expedia. The online travel agency said flight searches are also up to Canada, specifically Banff (65%) and Lake Louise (55%), its data showed. "We live in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles where we experience extreme heat for most of the summer, reaching highs well above 100," she said. "We want to be comfortable when we are traveling to experience all a city has to offer and take a break from the extreme heat at home."

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

Three EPA whistleblowers told ProPublica on Thursday that their complaints were the subject of the reports (which redact employee names). Agriculture is responsible for more than 10% of global carbon emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. But while agriculture is a massive carbon offender, it could now be part of a solution, as startups are trying new ways of using nature to save itself. Startups like Lithos, UNDO Carbon and California-based Eion are experimenting with several types of carbon-absorbing rocks that can accomplish what lime does while permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere at the same time. "We apply a rock dust onto farms, and that helps farmers condition the soil or make the soil better for improvements," said Anastasia Pavlovic, CEO of Eion. "Then over time, that manages to secure and sequester carbon, permanently removing it from the atmosphere."

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Recycling has not kept pace with plastic production, which has doubled over the past 20 years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation boarded a vessel managed by the same company whose cargo ship caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to a statement published Saturday. NBC News has reached out to the owner of the vessel Grace Ocean Private Limited, and its operator, Synergy Marine Group for comment. NBC News has also reached out to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland and U.S. Coast Guard for comment. A spokesperson for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would not comment further on the matter. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River.
