California is banning legacy admissions at private colleges and universities, ensuring that some of the country’s most selective schools will not favor applicants with familial or monetary connections to the schools. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed AB 1780 into law, prohibiting legacy and donor preferences in admissions at private, nonprofit institutions. Schools including Stanford University, the University of Southern California and Santa Clara University will now join the California State University system and other public institutions in the state that have long-banned legacy preferences. This is about making sure we’re leveling the playing field.”The law will affect schools with among the highest rates of legacy admissions — Stanford, USC and Santa Clara. In 2022, legacy admissions accounted for about 14 percent of Stanford and USC’s enrollment and about 13 percent at Santa Clara, according to Ting’s statement.

Though the S & P 500 is up more than 20% in 2024, Evercore ISI sees a patch of volatility ahead as the November presidential election approaches — and the firm has stocks to play either outcome. Evercore ISI thinks that automotive components manufacturer Aptiv could rise in the event of a Harris/Walz win. Evercore ISI called the bank "a flight to quality name," saying it was in a competitive position despite an uncertain backdrop. If Trump wins, Charter Communications is one stock that could benefit from a "potentially benign tax environment" and a pickup in M & A activity, Evercore ISI said. Supermarket operator Kroger could also outperform due to its ability to pass through higher prices to consumers, according to Evercore ISI.

Following that attack, Japan’s foreign ministry told Japanese schools to review their safety measures, Kamikawa said. At a regular news conference Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the case was being investigated. WASHINGTON — To hear Republican nominee Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance tell it, he wasn’t trying to eliminate the Affordable Care Act as president. “Obamacare was lousy health care. Vance added: “It illustrates Donald Trump’s entire approach to governing, which is to fix problems.”Both Trump and Vance are misrepresenting the facts. As president, Trump fought to repeal and undo the ACA using executive action, legislation and lawsuits. “Which means no actual plan.”“And 45 million Americans are insured through the Affordable Care Act,” she said.

US Census Bureau data found the enrollment rate of high school graduates at 61.4% in October 2023 was slightly down from 62% in 2022. Indeed, even as some Gen Zers don't think college is the best path for them, recent data has shown that college continues to provide long-lasting benefits when it comes to careers and earnings. In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however. Poon, who is the author of “Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations about Race, Affirmative Action, and Family,” said that with race masked in the admissions process, concerns around biases are actually more prevalent. And it’s going to be difficult to determine, for example, why there were drops in Asian American enrollment at some schools as well.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the share of Americans who were absent from work because of child care difficulties matched the all-time record for August. At the same time, employment in child care services has not been nearly enough to match the demand, according to Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, who highlighted the statistic in a note following Friday’s job report. The issue largely stems from the havoc created by the pandemic, which prompted many child care facilities to shut down, Pollak said. Consumer payments for child care are up at least 32% since 2019, a recent Bank of America study found. Child care advocates say that almost 10% of the state’s day care sites or home-based programs have shuttered since the pandemic.

As end-of-summer travel lines back up at TSA airport checkpoints in the U.S., one overseas airport is going all-in on a biometric passenger experience. The Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi will involve biometric sensors at every airport identification checkpoint by 2025. Airport security and travel experts have generally cheered the move. "Facial recognition is the future, and we will start to get intelligent with airport security and focus on the traveler rather than the items they bring. Among the concerns expressed are what type of data someone would need to give during the biometric enrollment process, and whether biometric security processes will be used to track movements throughout the airport, or if biometric data will be used outside the airport.
