Dec 1 (Reuters) - Canada's Brookfield Asset Management (BAM.TO) said on Friday it had raised $28 billion for its largest-ever fund, wagering on infrastructure assets the company believes would benefit from a shift to "deglobalization", given recent geopolitical tensions. Brookfield said the fund has already deployed 40% of its capital in six investments including renewable, transport, data center and telecom tower assets. The company, which manages over $850 billion in assets, said it had also raised $2 billion for related co-investment vehicles. Besides "deglobalization", Brookfield's latest fund will also focus on infrastructure assets tied to digitalization and decarbonization, the company said. The company had raised $20 billion for its previous global infrastructure fund in 2020.

That was the vision of Joan Kroc, billionaire philanthropist and heiress to the McDonald’s fortune of her husband, Ray. And today, 20 years later, 26 grand, state-of-the-art Kroc centers have opened in places as varied as Ashland, Ohio; Guayama, Puerto Rico; and Quincy, Illinois. Half was to be earmarked for the construction of recreation centers, with the other half deposited into endowments to support them. In the two decades since Kroc’s bequest, quantifying the precise impact on all of the communities served by the Kroc centers is difficult. She explained that Joan Kroc meant for the place to be accessible to all — that beauty was part of her plan.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Ratings agency Moody's (MCO.N) is creating a unit to research and rate private credit, the firm said on Monday. The global private credit market, with more than $1.3 trillion in assets under management, makes up about 12% of the alternatives market, investment firm BlackRock said in a recent report. Private credit is largely owned by buy-and-holdinvestors such as pension funds, endowments, foundations and insurance companies, the report said. "The rapid growth of the private credit market in recent years has introduced new challenges and opportunities for investors, who are looking for fresh analysis from a trusted source," said Moody's president Michael West. The private credit group will have a team of more than 50 analysts in different geographies looking into private credit in institutions such as business development companies, collateralized loan obligations, insurance and asset management companies.

Goldstone was referring to a type of business-development company, an investment vehicle widely used in the private-credit market. The vehicle Condor allocated to is a slice of BlackRock's $81 billion private-credit business, which is part of the wider $317 billion alternative-assets platform. 'Size matters'In the summer, BlackRock executives teased out their focus on private credit and fixed income broadly during an investor-day presentation. BlackRock's string of private-credit developments adds up to a long-term bet that this dynamic will continue. "That, in essence, is the paradox of private credit."

Yale University’s endowment gained 1.8% for the fiscal year ending June 30. Photo: Tim Tai for The Wall Street JournalThe hangover from the bursting of the startup bubble is weighing on big U.S. university endowments, with write-downs in their growth and venture-capital investments driving a second straight year of weak returns. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reported a loss of 2.9% and Duke University, a loss of 1% for the fiscal year ending June 30, while endowments at Yale and Stanford gained 1.8% and 4.4%, respectively. The median return for endowments and foundations of more than $1 billion was 5.6%, according to a preliminary estimate from Cambridge Associates.

But the lost donations might not hurt the schools as much as you might think — at least when taken in isolation. The donors blasting Penn also have given sums that, by any standard, are enormous. Schools could battle a reputational blowUnless the pile-on keeps coming, which it very well might, these schools' bottom lines could be just fine. "As prominent donors withdraw support, other donors may take that as a signal of the loss of institutional focus on education, and these many smaller donors may decide that they too should withdraw support," he added. BOSTON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Harvard University's endowment fund, the world's largest university endowment, posted a small investment gain that bested several other top U.S. universities' returns but saw the value of the fund shrink as more was paid to university operations. Harvard Management Co said on Thursday that it earned a 2.9% return in the fiscal year that ended June 30, leaving the total endowment at $50.7 billion. A year earlier it lost 1.8% amid tumbling markets but the endowment ended at $50.9 billion. Returns from these schools are watched closely because they pioneered putting money into hedge and private equity funds. Rival Yale University returned 1.8% while the University of Pennsylvania returned 1.3%.

Donors often give for specific purposes — facilities, faculty research, technology on campus, athletics, scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. The Wexner Foundation said it’s breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ attacks. Lawrence Summers, the former president of Harvard and US Treasury Secretary, has criticized the “morally unconscionable” student statement and Harvard leaders’ response. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues. Organizers of the Palestine Writes festival denied that it embraced antisemitism, according to UPenn student newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian.

By clinging to legacy admissions, colleges are not only undermining claims of advancing equality but may be shooting themselves in the financial foot. 'A weak and sad excuse'The legacy preference has always been a dance of public intentions and private subtext. While the rationales for preserving legacy admissions have evolved, the propensity to obfuscate them hasn't. Harvard's massive $50 billion endowment makes it pretty clear: the school doesn't need to keep legacy admissions anymore. When Wesleyan announced it was dropping legacy admissions Roth was adamant that it was the right move.

Instead, people like Ken Kencel — CEO of Churchill Asset Management, a private credit division of asset management giant Nuveen — held court. In the next decade, he predicted that private credit shops and direct lenders could fill in the holes in the asset-based lending space, as well as home and auto loans. Private credit — or alternative credit or direct lending — is a subsect of finance that has grown rapidly thanks to higher interest rates and distressed banks. Higher interest rates are forcing institutions — the pensions and endowments that make up hedge funds' biggest investors — to rethink their portfolios. But while the Bridgewater founder had the rapt attention of the room, it was at a direct lending panel a couple of hours later when an ambitious audience member pitched himself to the private credit executives onstage.

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Apollo Global Management (APO.N) and Blackstone (BX.N) both emerged from private equity’s primordial swamp. That spread comprised nearly three-quarters of Apollo’s $3.1 billion in profit available to be doled out to shareholders in 2022. That turbo-charged the fees Blackstone reaps from managing funds, which contributed 59% of $6.6 billion in profit available to shareholders last year. Apollo’s earnings from its insurance business are awarded an even more meager 10 times. This doesn’t form the closed loop like that between Athene, Apollo and its various specialist lenders.

Tokenizing real-world assets on a blockchain is one of the buzziest topics of the year, and this time it isn't just coming from financial incumbents like Citi, JPMorgan and Northern Trust, it's coming from crypto native players, too. As the world of crypto becomes more connected to the broader financial market, the appetite for tokenizing real-world assets, or RWA, is coming from smaller participants as well. Kraken Ventures' Stuti Pandey said since tokenization's last hype cycle, RWAs have benefited from changes in economics, technology and credibility. "Over the past few years, interest rates have been very depressed and that has favored very high growth, high risk assets," she said. Now that rates are down, it's actually these real-world assets that have interesting yield."

Europe, often a few years behind when it comes to startup trends, is also starting to produce its own solo GPs. After a record-breaking 2021, bigger VC funds in Europe have generally found it more challenging to raise their next funds. I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. Today the average merit-aid discount at private colleges is $23,000 — leaving the student to cover the remaining $30,000 or $40,000. At four-year public colleges, tuition now accounts for 52% of operational revenue, versus 48% from state funding. To make college more accessible, we need to make greater public investments — at both the state and federal levels — in higher education. James S. In New York City, debates over affordability often center on the proliferation of opulent high-rise developments. But in the boroughs, deep-pocketed investors are buying up hundreds of smaller buildings, prompting a new set of concerns in the city’s deepening housing crisis. Over the past few years, private equity firms have quietly spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying apartments in neighborhoods like Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg in Brooklyn and Ridgewood in Queens, property records show. Private equity firms — which typically invest money on behalf of pension funds, endowments or other large sources of wealth — focus on assets, like businesses or housing, that they can buy relatively cheaply but that have big profit potential. Their expansion into the housing market across the nation has prompted scrutiny in Congress about whether the trend is amplifying America’s affordability problems.

REUTERS/Patrick WerrCAIRO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - A historic neo-Islamic ministry in central Cairo was engulfed in flames on Saturday, only days after its employees had moved to premises in a new capital city under construction in the desert 45km east of Cairo. The main part of the building was built in 1898, with wings added on either side in 1912 and 1927. Most of the ministry's employees moved to the new capital, away from the clutter and chaos of Cairo, in late July. Some former ministry buildings are to be repurposed under Egypt's Sovereign Fund, a process the government hopes will draw badly needed investment and help regenerate central Cairo.
