Wall Street is notorious for its long hours and stressful lifestyle, particularly at the junior level, where grunt work abounds. They'd work hard and play hard, with an enviable social life like in all the Wall Street movies she'd seen. But Wall Street workers say that the nature of finance — the office politics and uniquely competitive cohort — can create a work culture that exacerbates feelings of loneliness. Some of the loneliness comes from this — it's all new, it feels bad, it's scary, and they don't feel like they can talk to anyone. But that doesn't mean people working on Wall Street can't do anything to mitigate their loneliness.

"Your whole year boils down to a 15 to 30-minute conversation," explained compensation consultant Alan Johnson. And that will result in some difficult conversations when bonus numbers start getting passed out early next year, said Johnson. This year, Johnson's New York-based compensation consulting firm, Johnson Associates, expects bonuses to be largely down from last year. The only exceptions would be for equity underwriting, retail and commercial bankers at large institutions, and wealth management. Scroll down for more on Johnson Associates' 2023 bonus report, including its predictions for M&A advisory, underwriting, sales and trading, private equity, and commercial banking.

Last week, Goldman Sachs inducted 608 employees into its exclusive "MD" club. But the investment bank still made a strong showing. Close to half of the new MDs work for Goldman's all-important global banking and markets (GBM) division, which houses the investment bank. Plus, it's one step removed from partner, which is the highest title at the prestigious investment bank below the C-Suite. Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

There are plenty of terms to describe Wall Street power brokers — but none of them matters quite so much right now as the simple phrase "managing director." Wealth management, which has been an area for growth across Wall Street, may prove an exception. "Two years ago, everybody was in the war for talent," said Alan Johnson, a Wall Street compensation expert at Johnson & Associates. Getting a promotion to managing director is tremendously important for the people who are vying for the role. "Once you become an MD, you're going to be making a lot more money.

The way Dan Miller told it, his startup Spora Health was crushing it, providing high-quality care to "thousands" of people online. The startup had secured at least one big contract, with Apple, according to three former Spora employees and another source close to Spora. Four of them told Insider they either no longer worked with Spora or hadn't seen Spora patients in a year. Two doctors listed on Spora's website as "featured Spora providers" also told Insider that they no longer worked for the startup. Another former clinician said she only ever treated a handful of Spora patients.

Citadel, a hedge fund, and Citadel Securities, its sister market-making firm, were founded by billionaire Ken Griffin in 1990 and 2002. This work-hard, play-hard culture is evident in the firms' training of new employees, including its most junior ranks. They also had a Q&A with Peng Zhao, the CEO of Citadel Securities, who touched on how to prioritize time and find ways to be a leader, among other topics. The training program hasn't always been quite this involved. Fan lives in New York and will be based in Citadel Securities' Manhattan office.

Third-quarter earnings season kicked off on Wall Street with JPMorgan and Citigroup reporting that headcount is up. In announcing third-quarter earnings, JPMorgan said headcount was up 7% over this time last year to 308,669. And the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about whether dealmaking — and therefore investment banking hiring — will come back next year. The investment bank, which was recently bought by Swiss rival UBS, said it currently has more than 2,000 staffers in that location. At Citi, investment banking fees were down 18% over last year, although underwriting fees have improved as companies look to sell more debt and stock.

The pandemic pushed financial giants to embrace a more casual dress code that many other corporations had begun to embrace. Making mistakes doesn't feel great, but they can provide some lessons you might not have learned otherwise. We asked this year's rising stars of Wall Street to open up about the biggest missteps of their careers so far and what they took away from them. Some shared their rookie errors — like slamming their laptop shut after forgetting to save their first big pitch deck or duplicating a trade — while others gave more reflective answers about how early career mistakes impacted their paths. We've got to iterate and change how we do things, and I think that's helped our team's process a lot. So my mistakes also brought me here, and everything that has been a mistake is always a learning experience.

As for today's edition, we're looking at how AI could upend the job of the junior banker, and the effect that'll have on Wall Street's traditional career path. But this crucial piece of Wall Street's ecosystem could be upended by the rise of artificial intelligence. Goldman Sachs partners are leaving — some 202 during David Solomon's five years as CEO by Insider's calculation. In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. Of the former Goldman executives that Insider interviewed, here are the most cited reasons they gave for leaving Goldman. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Goldman Sachs partners are paid well by any standard: $950,000 in base salary and often multiples of that in annual bonuses.

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, former Goldman Sachs partners explain what led them to leave their prestigious positions within the bank. A recent Insider investigation by Dakin Campbell and Emmalyse Brownstein found that at least 202 partners have left the firm during CEO David Solomon's volatile five-year tenure. And while Solomon's strategic missteps were a key talking point for many, not all the former partners bashed the CEO. Goldman Sachs' summer internship program is harder to get into than Harvard. This summer Goldman hosted 2,970 interns, about 500 of whom were placed in the investment bank, according to stats provided by Goldman. Some rising juniors are also part of the internship classes, however, including Stephenson, who applied for her first Goldman internship during her freshman year of college. Last summer, Stephenson took the subway to work, which had its share of problems. According to Friedland, there's no "busy work" or "shadowing" and the senior bankers rely on the interns to do real work.

In a post on Instagram, Handler offered 100 things he wished he had known before becoming Jefferies's CEO in 1990. He has become one of the most active Wall Street CEOs on social media. Now, Julian Salisbury is leaving Goldman Sachs after 25 years without a replacement. In a memo Friday, CEO David Solomon thanked Salisbury, chief investment officer of the bank's asset and wealth management division, for his "contributions to Goldman Sachs, our clients and our people." Also leaving the bank is Takashi Murata, co-head of Asia Pacific private investing and global co-head of real estate within Goldman Sachs' asset management unit. Nachmann's memo said Richard Spencer will become EMEA head of Real Estate and Nikhil Reddy will become Asia Pacific head of Real Estate. That's part of the virtuous ecosystem of Goldman Sachs," he added.
