The exodus of major advertisers adds to the business challenges Elon Musk faces in managing X. Photo: Carlos Barria/ReutersApple and several major entertainment companies stopped advertising on Elon Musk’s X after the social-media network’s owner described an antisemitic post this week as “the actual truth” and again lashed out at the Anti-Defamation League. Among those pausing ads on the social-media platform are Disney , Warner Bros. Discovery , Paramount Global , NBCUniversal and its parent Comcast and Lions Gate Entertainment , people close to those companies said.

Social media’s antisemitism problemThe rise in antisemitism since the outbreak of war in the Middle East has ignited a clash between Wall Street donors and universities, and divided some workplaces. Now, the pressure is building on social media platforms, particularly Elon Musk’s X and TikTok, with advertisers, celebrities and influencers pulling spending and confronting executives about the proliferation of hate speech. He posted to X his support for white nationalist conspiracy theories that Jewish communities were spreading hatred. Yaccarino was brought in to win back advertisers after Musk bought Twitter last year and culled many content moderators. More than a dozen Jewish celebrities and creators, including the actors Sacha Baron Cohen, Debra Messing and Amy Schumer, confronted TikTok executives this week.

Elon Musk acquired Twitter, now renamed X, in a deal valued at about $44 billion last year. Photo: Avalon.red/Zuma PressA federal judge denied X Corp.’s request to modify or terminate a consent order between the social-media company acquired by Elon Musk last year and the Federal Trade Commission over how the platform handled users’ information. In a decision Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson in the Northern District of California said his court lacked the power to grant X relief from another tribunal’s orders. The judge also denied X’s request to stop a deposition of Musk by the FTC.

New York CNN —Nonprofit online watchdog the Center for Countering Digital Hate on Thursday hit back at Elon Musk’s X in a motion to dismiss the social media company’s August lawsuit. CCDH claims that X’s lawsuit is “riddled with legal deficiencies” and attempts to punish the nonprofit for its First Amendment protected speech, according to its Thursday filing in the Northern District Court of California. X and a lawyer representing the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on CCDH’s Thursday filing. In its complaint against CCDH, X alleges it has lost “at least tens of millions of dollars” in advertising revenue. “Instead, X Corp. has ginned up baseless claims purporting to take issue with how the CCDH Defendants gathered data that formed the basis for their research.”

New York CNN —IBM on Thursday announced it had suspended advertising on Elon Musk’s X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after an ad for the computing giant appeared alongside pro-Nazi content. The accounts remained active on X Thursday afternoon, hours after the report was published. No brands had specifically targeted the pro-Nazi accounts identified in Thursday’s report for their advertisements, nor did the company intentionally place their ads there, the spokesperson said. Full stop.”IBM is not the first company to part ways with X after its ad appeared next to hateful content. Musk’s X has also come under fire for reinstating the accounts of users who were previously banned on the social media platform, including far-right and neo-Nazi figures.

Isaiah Samad was looking for an alternative to Twitter earlier this year, growing tired of the “hot takes” and “rage bait” that he felt had grown too common on the site. After signing up for Meta Platforms’ Threads when it launched in July, he noted a more welcoming, positive atmosphere on the app and eventually deactivated his account on X, previously known as Twitter.

NewsGuard identified seven accounts it describes as “misinformation superspreaders,” which have shared widely debunked claims about the conflict. Verified users are also eligible to receive payments from the platform, financially incentivizing posts from the users who are actively spreading misinformation. The group said 186 of the 250 posts were sent by premium X accounts. Soon after NewsGuard published its report Thursday, Musk posted on X that the company “should be disbanded immediately.” CNN has reached out to X and Musk for further comment. In May, there was a brief dip in the stock market after verified accounts on X shared fake images of a purported “explosion” near the Pentagon.

What the Israel-Hamas war means for defense stocks
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN —When war breaks out, defense companies tend to make money. That means aerospace and defense stocks tend to rise during geopolitical unrest. Defense stocks typically rise after military conflicts but soon lose those gains. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the iShares defense ETF surged by 5%, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman’s shares jumping about 20%. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

New York CNN —After Elon Musk hinted last month that X could start charging all users, the company (formerly known as Twitter) announced a test of such a system. The test will apply only to new web accounts, and the fee will be waived if users sign up for X’s $3.99 per month premium subscription service. New users in the testing region who opt out of premium and the annual subscription will only be able to read posts, watch videos and follow accounts — but not interact on the platform. X says it has removed “hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts,” taken down thousands of posts since the attack on Israel by Hamas and ramped up Community Notes, its program that allows users to fact check other users’ posts. “X is… addressing identified fake and manipulated content during this constantly evolving and shifting crisis,” X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in a letter to EU Commissioner Thiery Breton last week.

The NLRB alleged that X fired Yu after she attempted to organize other Twitter workers who were upset about Musk's sudden change to the company's work requirements. Five days later, Yue was fired and told that she was violating an unspecified company policy, the legal document said. The NLRB alleges that X has "been interfering with, restraining, and coercing employees in the exercise of the rights guaranteed" under national labor law. "After 12 amazing years and 3 weeks of chaos, I'm officially fired by Twitter," Yue said in a tweet on Nov. 15. WATCH: Elon Musk has "cut off the good guys, empowered the bad guys" on X

London CNN —X says it has removed “hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts” and taken down thousands of posts since the attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group. “X is… addressing identified fake and manipulated content during this constantly evolving and shifting crisis,” she added. The platform had “assembled a leadership group to assess the situation” shortly after news broke about the attack, Yaccarino said. It had also responded to more than 80 “take down requests” from EU authorities to remove content. “Community Notes” — which allow X users to fact check false posts — are visible on “thousands of posts, generating millions of impressions,” she wrote.

CNN has requested comment from Musk and X on the posts related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Community notes allow users on X to fact-check false posts on the platform. While notes were appended to both of these false posts, they often come after a false post has been viewed thousands – or in some cases millions – of times. “In times of war, social media becomes a propaganda battlefield; there is always an element of disinformation and exaggeration,” said Emerson Brooking, senior resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab. He said other platforms that have little or no guardrails including the social media messaging app Telegram are also hotbeds of misinformation, but X is unique given Musk’s behavior.

Those companies and organizations include Amazon, Samsung, the Denver Broncos, Cox Communications, STARZ, The Wall Street Journal, The Michael J. But that it apparently also believes it is appropriate to monetize the outlet’s vicious hate speech says volumes not only about the company’s ethics, but its supposed commitment to brand safety. X must be well aware that it is pairing advertisements with racist content, given that the NFL made noise about this very problem last week. In a Thursday night statement, X effectively acknowledged it has more work to do to make the platform safe for brands. Some of the brands whose advertisements appeared on VDARE’s account expressed strong displeasure on Thursday when they became aware of the situation.

Elon Musk’s X is a black hole of value
  + stars: | 2023-10-03 | by ( Jennifer Saba | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
NEW YORK, Oct 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - X is still worth something, but not for the people running it. loadingDespite Musk’s big pronouncements about pushing into subscriptions, X has historically relied on advertising, which contributed over 90% of revenue when it was a public company. Put it all together, and X isn’t just worth less than Musk paid for it, but likely less than its debt. Put that on the same enterprise-value-to-sales multiple as Snap, which is down to a mere 3 times, and X is worth around $8 billion. Like a financial black hole, X threatens to consume most of whatever value it once had.

Environmental groups slammed Elon Musk's X app, formerly known as Twitter, in a report Wednesday ranking social media platforms on their approach to climate change misinformation. Before Musk bought Twitter last year, the app said it banned advertisements that "contradict the scientific consensus on climate change." In a statement responding to the climate scorecard, YouTube said: "Our climate change policy explicitly prohibits the monetization of content that denies the existence of climate change, as well as ads that promote these claims. Debate or discussions of climate change topics, including around public policy or research, is allowed, but when content crosses the line to climate change denial, we stop showing ads on those videos. In general, our systems also don't recommend or prominently surface content that includes climate change misinformation."

New York CNN —Elon Musk’s X Corp., the parent company of the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Friday sued California’s attorney general over the state’s new content moderation law. The law requires social media companies to post their terms of service online and submit a semiannual report to the state attorney general outlining their content moderation policies and practices. It added that the law could place an “undue burden” on social media companies such as Musk’s X, which is headquartered in California. “California will not stand by as social media is weaponized to spread hate and disinformation that threaten our communities and foundational values as a country,” Newsom said in the statement. The law “‘compel[s]’ X Corp. to ‘speak a particular message,’ which necessarily ‘alters the content of’ its speech,’” in violation of its First Amendment rights, the company alleges in the complaint.

During a lengthy sit-down interview with CNBC’s Sara Eisen, Yaccarino described the one-time bird platform as if everything were not only swell, but in a better position since Musk’s chaotic takeover and reign. But perhaps an even more preposterous claim from Yaccarino came when Eisen pressed her on brand safety and hate speech appearing on the platform since Musk’s takeover. Yaccarino celebrated Coca-Cola and State Farm marketing their products on Twitter/X, as she underscored the platform’s commitment to brand safety. Under Musk’s watch, the platform has welcomed back white nationalists, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaccine activists, and various other extremists with open arms. Alas, it is no wonder that conspiracy theories and hate speech are flourishing on the platform.
