Mount Everest is astoundingly tall at 29,032 feet above sea level, besting its Himalayan neighbors by hundreds of feet. But the world’s tallest peak is still growing, scientists say, thanks in part to the merger of two nearby river systems tens of thousands of years ago. Everest has gained between about 50 and 160 feet as a result of that merger, researchers revealed in a study published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Researchers also say this could explain why Everest is unusually tall, reaching nearly 800 feet higher than its neighbors. “While not entirely revolutionary, these findings are certainly surprising,” Dai said, adding that they could lead to a re-examination of current models of Himalayan formation and evolution.

And then, with the US presidential elections now less than five weeks away, there is the prospect of a second Donald Trump presidency. AdvertisementMark Rutte earned the nickname "Trump whisperer" after placating the former president on US commitments to NATO. According to Prakash, Rutte is "coming into the role from a certain outlook, and that outlook is essentially saying: 'We need to stand with America.'" NATO's deputy secretary-general, Mircea Geoană, told Euronews in July that China, as a direct enabler of Russia's war in Ukraine, threatened the alliance's security. China's slowing crude demand growth and economic struggles are dampening oil market sentiment. Global benchmark Brent crude oil futures were up 0.17% to $71.82 per barrel at 2.14 a.m. This would be a big shift in policy, since Saudi Arabia has been leading OPEC and the group's allies, including Russia, in maintaining oil supply cuts since late 2022. AdvertisementDespite the downside pressure on oil prices, things could change quickly if geopolitical uncertainty rises further in the Middle East. The US may also provide some support to the market as crude oil inventories hit a two-and-a-half year low as of September 20, the latest data available.

He now appears to be seeking to maintain what experts have dubbed a "balancing act" between its relations with the West, Russia, and China. "Even if Turkey does join BRICS, I do not believe it is going to lead to a fundamental redefinition of Turkey's relationship with the West." Iran recently transferred Fath-360 close-range ballistic missiles to Russia, weapons that can blast fortified positions or cities near the frontlines and which could strain Ukraine's air defenses. An Israeli soldier examines part of an Iranian ballistic missile fired at Israel during Iran's direct attack in April. Russia already acquired KN-23 ballistic missiles from North Korea. Consequently, while these close-range ballistic missiles could contribute to some Russian tactical victories, they are certainly no game-changers. On Tuesday, the Russian military launched large-scale naval and air drills in the Sea of Japan alongside China. It's the second time in only three months that the powers have held joint military exercises, with drills held near the southern Chinese port of Guangdong in July. The joint exercises are taking place in the Sea of Japan and Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. Some analysts, though, are pointing to tensions between Russia and China that could weaken the alliance. But for now, the alliance is growing closer, and Thomson said that the US will be watching the latest military exercises between Russia and China closely.

France's challenges are far from over, however, with the country facing acute fiscal challenges and an ongoing threat posed by the far-right National Rally opposition, led by Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen. France this week asked the Commission to extend its deadline of Sept. 20 to submit debt reduction proposals. Analysts say Barnier's political survival therefore "depends on the whims and personal-political calculations of Le Pen." "The great unknown ... is how far Le Pen will be willing to address the most immediate crisis facing Barnier and the country: the painful choices needed to prevent France from plunging into a destructive fiscal crisis by the end of this year," he said. Russian banks are running low on yuan, Bloomberg reported. AdvertisementAn intensifying supply crunch in the Chinese yuan has pressured Russians to embrace a costlier method of securing the needed currency, Bloomberg reported. With the yuan liquidity shortfall doubling, Russian firms have grown increasingly dependent on yuan swaps provided by the Bank of Russia, Bloomberg said, but borrowing the yuan this way comes at a higher rate. This hasn't stopped yuan swap activity from ballooning. But even before the fresh sanctions package took effect this summer, Chinese banks were already halting yuan payments with Russia over fears of Western repercussions.

U.S. crude oil prices traded close to a three-week high Tuesday, after rallying on Monday in anticipation of an attack by Iran against Israel that could play havoc with Mideast production and transportation. Here are Tuesday's energy prices:"These risks remain low-probability events, which helps explain the modest increase in prices," Gloystein wrote. But prices eased slightly Tuesday as a strike by Iran had not yet materialized. Rob Ginsberg, managing director at Wolfe Research, said U.S. crude could rise above a resistance level of $84 per barrel. "Once out, mid to high $90s isn't crazy," Ginsberg said.

More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.
