Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn said he's getting concerned about the stock market after a strong rally and has added sizable downside protection to his portfolio. Between January and June, the S & P 500 popped 15.9% for its best first half since 2019. Einhorn, 54, believes inflation remains a big risk even though data has suggested easing price pressures. Recent inflation readings have shown a noted deceleration and the tailwind from higher rents is likely to dissipate, causing core inflation to fall further," Einhorn said. "Even so, we believe inflation is stickier and more entrenched than the market is currently appraising."

Are you referring to the S & P index itself, or one of the variations, and which symbol(s)? Thanks, Doug W. There are many exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S & P 500 . The top three by assets under management, in order from largest to smallest, would be the State Street Global Advisors' SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , BlackRock's iShares Core S & P 500 ETF (IVV) , and the Vanguard S & P 500 ETF (VOO) . As mentioned in the question, there are lots of ETFs that track the S & P 500, so by no means are these three the only games in town. Volume usually does pick up outside of normal trading hours when an event takes place, such as an earnings release.

The quickly expanding world of buffer funds now has an option for investors who want 100% downside protection. The Innovator Equity Defined Protection ETF (TJUL) was introduced on Tuesday, the latest in the firm's defined outcome suite of funds. This one is designed to give investors full downside protection over a two-year period, in exchange for capped upside participation of roughly 16.6%. Money market funds have seen huge inflows this year, suggesting many investors are still reluctant to to take on risky investments. The fund is essentially a three-pronged options strategy, using flex options.

Many investors appear comfortable betting on stocks to continue rising after a surprising strong first half, according to fund flow data. Investors even plowed $1.9 billion into the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ) , which is up almost 40% so far this year. The flows are notable because investors have been somewhat reluctant to put more money in stocks this year despite the rally. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) and the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) also saw inflows this week, so some investors are still hedging their bets on stocks. With investors starting to chase the recent rally, all major regions except Europe saw inflows.

The fund puts an equal amount of money into each stock in the S & P 500 and is rebalanced quarterly, diluting the effect of the biggest companies. "Despite what many consider the market's limited participation, the A/D index for the S & P has reached an all-time high [recently]. Goldman Sachs filed last week to launch two similar funds: the Goldman Sachs U.S. Equity Premium Income ETF and the U.S. Tech Index Equity Premium Income ETF. Some other funds that use some form of a covered call strategy similar to JPMorgan's approach with equity linked notes are already on the market. The JPMorgan funds both have an expense ratio of 0.35%. However, even a fund that did exactly that would likely not be an option for some financial advisers until it had an established track record, giving the JPMorgan funds a big head start. The competition is coming even as the rally for growth stocks has dulled some of the allure for the JPMorgan funds.

A U.S.-based hedge fund is predicting a hard landing scenario for stock markets despite a steady decline in inflation, with the S & P 500 falling into a bear market. "Livermore views the path forward as the most likely scenario for markets is a hard landing," Neuhauser said in notes to CNBC. The hedge fund manager added that despite this "soft landing" in inflation, "ultimately it's going to lead to a much harder landing with stocks as inflation remains sticky for some time to come." The hedge fund manager identified three global stocks that he believes will perform well if this scenario comes to fruition. Livermore, the hedge fund founded by Neuhauser in 2009, owns shares in Amaroq, along with billionaire investor Louis Bacon.

The expansion comes as Grayscale is embroiled in a lawsuit with the Securities and Exchange Commission over the company's attempt to convert its $17 billion Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) into a spot bitcoin ETF. The SEC has repeatedly declined to approve spot bitcoin products, citing concerns about manipulation in the underlying crypto market. One of the new ETFs that Grayscale filed for on Tuesday could be seen as something of a substitute for a spot bitcoin fund. The Grayscale Global Bitcoin Composite ETF, which would have the ticker "BTC" upon launch, would invest in spot bitcoin products outside the U.S. as well as the equities of bitcoin mining companies. The other prospective funds are the Grayscale Ethereum Futures ETF (ETHG) and the Grayscale Privacy ETF (PRVC).
Investors looking to trade the showdown over the U.S. debt ceiling should focus on stocks that are tied most to government spending, according to Citigroup. Lawmakers have been trying to find a way to raise the debt ceiling so the government can pay its bills on time. On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that failing to raise the debt ceiling will cause a " steep economic downturn ." As the fight over the debt ceiling — and talk of spending cuts — ramp up, some stocks will trade down, Citi pointed out. He believes the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense , SPDR S & P Aerospace & Defense , and Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETFs "could be useful off-the-shelf trading tools to consider."
Why the inflows? A 'two-sided equation' for bank ETFs

"It's a two-sided equation here," Reggie Browne, principal of GTS, told Bob Pisani on CNBC's 'ETF Edge' on Monday. "If you look at the entire suite of regional bank ETFs, they're picking up assets." While regional bank ETFs continue to tumble, the funds still netted more than $105 million in inflows within the past month, according to FactSet. Flows were largely into the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) , which pulled in $108 million during the same period. The dividend yield on the KRE stands at 3.84%, while the SPDR S&P Bank ETF (KBE) offers 3.59%.
The first wave of first-quarter earnings will put two of the biggest holdings of a red-hot ETF under the microscope. The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) , which uses stock selection to find value plays and equity-linked notes to generate additional yield, has a 12-month rolling dividend yield of more than 11% and a 30-day SEC yield of 9.59%. But stock selection is still a big part of JEPI's performance, and earnings season can put that to the test. Two of the fund's top holdings, as of Tuesday, are set to report earnings this week: Progressive and UnitedHealth . Moreover, the Mayfield, Ohio-based Progressive only accounts for 0.25% in the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , but has a 1.6% weighting in JEPI.
Buffer ETFs, which are encompassed by defined outcome funds, offer participation in stocks or bonds while maintaining a level of downside protection — protection usually paid for by a cap level on potential upsides. For investors easing into the defined outcome ETF space, Day said, the Innovator Defined Wealth Shield ETF (BALT) is the more conservative strategy. "Every time the market has corrected the 20% buffer, BALT has really guarded investors against losses," Day said. But to counter those concerns, Sohn explained, market volatility in recent years has created an environment tailored for buffer ETFs to prevail. Now you're seeing options-related strategies to get that income through the equity market."
The S&P 500 is down 5% from its early February high though it remains up 3% year to date. ... Now the downside tail has a lot more risk priced into it," said Chris Murphy, co-head of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna. Volatility in the Cboe Volatility Index (.VIX), which reflects expectations of stock volatility, has been muted by comparison, though the index hit a five-month high earlier this week. "That is something worth monitoring closely to gauge the expansion of risk within the system," he said. March 6 (Reuters) - Trading in new near-dated U.S. options contracts can supercharge volatility in U.S. stocks, potentially leading to tremendous intraday declines, analysts at JPMorgan said. The U.S. equity options market has seen a rise in the trading of options contracts set to expire at the end of the trading day - dubbed 0DTE (zero day to expiry) options - with their daily notional value rising to about $1 trillion, according to JPMorgan data. Their recent growth has been eyed as one cause of intraday volatility, with JPMorgan's Marko Kolanovic last month warning they could spark a massive volatility event under certain circumstances. Such a scenario could occur if the S&P 500 fell 5% in five minutes, triggering $30.5 billion in 0DTE option-related trading that would tack another 20 percentage points onto the index's decline, the bank’s analysts said. Furthermore, JPM noted that retail traders were not the main driver of volume growth in 0DTE options, with individual investors accounting for about 20% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY.P) options volume and only around 5% of the S&P 500 same-day options.
WHAT ARE 0DTE OPTIONS? They are options contracts that have less than a day before expiring, though they may have been listed days, weeks or months ago. The daily notional value of trading in 0DTE options has grown to about $1 trillion, according to J.P. Morgan. WHY ARE TRADERS DRAWN TO 0DTE OPTIONS? With 0DTE contracts expiring daily, there is limited scope for positions to build up over time, they said.
