The coming reign of the only child
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Ann Friedman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +16 min
American women are having kids later in life, leaving less time to bear multiple children. American women in general are having children later, but the delay is most pronounced among the most educated. Even religious conservatives, who are biblically motivated to be fruitful and multiply, are starting families later and more often having only one child. So what will the coming reign of the only child mean for America? Just as having children is no longer seen as a required stage of adulthood, having siblings will no longer be a de facto part of childhood.

Treasury yields have ripped higher of late, even as the Federal Reserve continues to cut rates. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield has soared nearly 70 basis points to 4.3% since mid-September, when the Fed cut rates by a half-point. Despite the Fed's latest action, the incoming Trump administration is likely to keep yields elevated, according to Ned Davis Research. Democrats called for a full party reckoning on Wednesday, as they attempted to pick up the pieces of their shattered organization a day after Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to former President Donald Trump. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., put out a statement blasting "big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party." "It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them," he said Wednesday. Harris offered to console Democrats over the loss to former President Donald Trump, acknowledging they were "feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now." Trump never did when he lost to President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Democrats reveled in the change, flooding donation channels and crushing fundraising records. Stocks exploded higher, bonds tanked and crypto boomed to historic peaks, indicating lofty hopes for when the president-elect takes office in January. However, there's still a lot of game left to be played, and the score could change a lot in future days. Essentially, strategists worry Trump's plan for punishing tariffs, higher spending and lower taxes will send bond yields higher, generally a recipe for trouble in stocks. "The question for me is how much can the Trump rally extend in the short term, but it strikes me that selling long positions into a rally makes a good deal of sense."
