A sports bettor turned $100 into more than $80,000 after cashing out of his championship parlay bet. The $100 parlay ticket created by Shelton in May 2023 was based on who would win the MLB World Series, the NFL Super Bowl, and the NBA Championship. Shelton said DraftKings offered him an initial $11,000 to cash out his $100 parlay ticket. Shelton had previously shopped around his $100 parlay ticket after the Thunder won the first round of their playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans. Using sports bet platform WagerWire, Shelton said he received offers for as much as $200,000 for his parlay ticket.

Sports bettors flocked to ESPN Bet after its mid-November launch. Taking 10% to 20% market share by 2027 no longer seemed like such a stretch — even in a crowded, competitive space. ESPN Bet's share of the online sports betting market has dipped in recent months. The gamble may be riskier than analysts thought, and it will be an outright disaster if ESPN Bet doesn't perform better than Barstool Sportsbook. The Dublin-based parent company of FanDuel launched a secondary listing of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange on Jan. 29. Shareholders have since voted to making the NYSE the primary listing for the stock rather than London, and that change is slated to take effect May 31. UBS analyst Ben Shelley said in a May 9 note to clients that the primary listing change could help close those gaps. Flutter is not the only company in recent years to shift its primary listing to the U.S., and the track records of those companies could be a positive sign for Flutter. UBS pointed to building materials companies CRH — which transitioned its primary listing to the NYSE in September 2023 — and Ferguson — which made the switch in May 2022 — as examples.

In today's big story, we're looking at how a sports bettor trying to hedge a $1.7 million payout shows the gambling world is taking a page out of Wall Street's book . The big storySports gambling goes Wall StreetiStock; Rebecca Zisser/BIHow would you like to turn $100 into $1.7 million in a little over a year? Thanks to a secondary market for gambling tickets, Shelton could sell his ticket to another bettor. And not unlike Wall Street's feelings about retail traders, Shelton is the type of gambler sportsbooks love. Unlike mom-and-pop gamblers who often bet on a whim, so-called sharps' systematic approach to gambling can pose a problem for sportsbooks.

A bettor could score a payout of $1.7 million if the Oklahoma City Thunder win the NBA title. The original $100 bet was a parlay ticket that also included championships for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Chiefs, both of which have happened. The parlay ticket was purchased via DraftKings and cost Shelton just $100. Now he stands to win $1.7 million, representing a potential return of 1,690,900% if the bet pans out. There is an entire separate industry dedicated to playing matchmaking between high-rolling sports bettors and opportunities with high initial buy-ins, like Shelton's parlay ticket.

From Princeton University in New Jersey to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the same chant can be heard: “Disclose! The specifics of student protesters’ divestment demands vary in scope from school to school. Other students, like those at Cornell University and Yale, are asking their schools to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. Other common threads include demanding universities disclose their investments, sever academic ties with Israeli universities and support a ceasefire in Gaza. Proponents for divestment counter that its value lies in raising awareness and stigmatizing partnerships with targeted regimes or industries.

Raine was an early investor in DraftKings — which helped establish the US sports-betting sector — and has been investing at a rate of about three companies a year. Raine is looking to take stakes in leagues with rights they can monetize in various ways and invest in growing, founder-led companies. Raine says college sports still hold a big opportunity for outside investors, even if the structure of college athletics adds complexity. In 2019, Raine helped the Pac-12 Conference explore raising private equity (which it ultimately decided against doing). Raine also helped the PGA Tour raise $3 billion this year through a for-profit entity.

Still, Einhorn said sports betting, if executed right, could take the shares much higher. "Were the market to credit PENN with merely 15% of DraftKings' value, that segment alone would be worth $20 per share."
