The list of 10 was announced Wednesday by the National Book Foundation, which also released 10 nominees in literature in translation, with original languages including Korean, Arabic and French. The lists, along with those for fiction, nonfiction and poetry to be announced later this week, will be narrowed next month to five in each category. The winners will be revealed during a Manhattan ceremony Nov. 15. NEW YORK (AP) — Two cable news personalities from the complete opposite ends of the political spectrum — Mark Levin and Jen Psaki — are increasing their presence on television. Psaki, former press secretary to President Joe Biden and current MSNBC host, is moving into prime-time for one night a week. Since switching to media, her Sunday afternoon show “Inside with Jen Psaki” has proven to be successful for the network. Levin, the radio talk host whose TV show “Life, Liberty & Levin” airs Sunday nights on Fox News Channel, will have an additional weekend hour on Saturdays, Fox said. In addition to his Fox duty, Levin hosts a syndicated weekday radio show that is heard on some 300 stations.

China's slowing economy is chipping away at some American companies' revenues. China's July economic report didn't mention youth-unemployment statistics after it soared to 21.3% in the second quarter, citing economic and social changes. While Chinese manufacturing and construction are struggling to recover, some American companies with strong ties to China are also feeling the effects. Dow's rival DuPont also reported a drop in China sales from existing operations, a 14% year-over-year fall. To be sure, some American companies have performed well in China over the past few months.

The Dow's recent winning streak is a worrying sign, David Rosenberg says. Rosenberg says a recession may be underway, and plunging inflation can be bad news for stocks. For the first time since January 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed in the green for 13 straight sessions before snapping its winning streak on Thursday. Stocks were up 28% at this point in 1987, Rosenberg noted. Rosenberg cautioned investors who expect stocks to soar because inflation has now slowed.

Specifically, the central bank said it would offer to buy 10-year JGBs at 1.0% in fixed-rate operations, instead of the previous rate of 0.5% - tolerating the wider band for bond market borrowing rates. With July core inflation in Tokyo falling back to a 10-month low, the need for tightening may be ebbing anyway. Friday's data is expected to show another drop in the Fed's favoured core PCE inflation gauge in June. For markets more broadly, Friday seems a little scattergun so far after a heavy week of macro policy and corporate news. U.S. Treasury yields fell back from two-week highs hit after the punchy U.S. economy readouts and central bank moves, with the 2-to-10 year yield curve steepening as recession fears abate.

Over its 1987 streak, the Dow climbed to 2,104.47, from roughly 1,895.95 — a gain of 11%. If the Dow were to finish higher Thursday, it would tie the stock benchmark's longest winning streak ever, which was in June 1897. Honeywell 's (HON) 2.5% gain amid the Dow's 13-session winning streak is being wiped away by the stock's post-earnings slide Thursday. Microsoft 's (MSFT) roughly flat overall performance during the Dow's streak, squeaking out a just 0.2% gain, is due in large part to the stock's 3.8% decline Wednesday.

Its recent rally comes as traders widely believe that the U.S. Federal Reserve's 25 basis point rate hike on Wednesday was the last in its campaign to control inflation. The Dow's longest-ever winning streak was 14 sessions, set in 1897, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. Even after its recent gains, the Dow has lagged Wall Street's other main indexes in 2023. Reuters GraphicsWhile the Dow's recent winning streak is unusually long, its overall strength has not been exceptional. The Dow's last 13-day winning streak in January 1987 produced a gain of 11.1%.

ET, and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2.30 p.m. (You'll be able to watch it live here .) The Fed is likely to raise its benchmark policy rate by 0.25 percentage point to a range of 5.25% to 5.5%, a 22-year high. Investors will watch for clues about whether this is the last hike of the cycle and when policy makers might start cutting rates. Traders expect that the Fed will signal more future tightening to tame inflation, which could crimp energy demand. The rise followed a wild late session yesterday fueled by news of a deal with Banc of California.

July 25 (Reuters) - Dow (DOW.N) on Tuesday posted a 70% drop in second-quarter profit on lower product prices and weak sales volumes, while warning that the macroeconomic environment would remain challenging in the second half of the year after. Dow said it was expecting third-quarter net sales in the range of $10.25 billion to $10.75 billion, lower than Wall Street's expectations of $12.37 billion in net sales. Dow's net sales during the quarter fell to $11.4 billion from $15.7 billion, hinting at weak demand for its products that are used in everything from plastics and paints to building materials. Dow posted operating income of 75 cents per share, beating estimates by 5 cents, according to Refinitiv data, aided by its cost-saving efforts. All three "headline indexes" are considered, in one way or another, proxies for the stock market, and over long periods, they've tended to perform pretty similarly. S&P 500When investing pros talk about market returns, they're usually talking about the S&P 500. The index tracks roughly the 500 largest U.S.-traded stocks, comprising 80% of all stocks traded on the market. Created in 1957, the index was the U.S.'s first index weighted by market capitalization (stock price times total outstanding shares), and today it is the favored benchmark index for mutual fund managers who measure themselves against the broad stock market.
