Some days, more than 1,000 arrive in the boulder-strewn mountains near San Diego, alone. These encampments would likely vanish under a Senate bill that would make sweeping changes to immigration laws, including allowing a border emergency authority that would restrict asylum when arrests for illegal crossings hit certain thresholds. If it overcomes long odds, the legislation would radically upend how asylum is handled at the border. Mbala Glodi, 42, arrived in Jacumba Hot Springs, a tiny border town east of San Diego, after crossing the border illegally in September. ___Spagat reported from San Diego.

While 30-year mortgage rates have come down by more than a full percent to around 6.6%, they're still significantly more elevated than their 2021 low of less than 3%. Lower mortgage rates mean higher cash flows and a higher likelihood for appreciation, which is good for strategies like flipping. But there are ways for real-estate investors to get around higher rates, Meyer says. This means asking the seller if they can provide a cash payment that effectively lowers mortgage rates for the first few years of ownership. Given that rising mortgage rates have largely killed demand in the housing market, buyers have had more success recently getting deal-sweeteners like rate-buydowns, according to research from Redfin.

Maggie Poston started the morning after her 90th birthday the same way she has nearly every day for the past 45 years: helping students at P.S. Poston started working as a crossing guard at P.S. "We haven't had any students hit by a car with Maggie here, because she makes sure that everyone stops," says Katerina Sidbury, P.S. The only time Poston says she's been late was on Jan. 29, the morning after her 90th birthday. She told her friends she was looking for a part-time job with a short commute, and one of them told her about the open crossing guard job.

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The state also prides itself on giving a boost to lesser-known contenders who make the effort to meet one-on-one with Hawkeye State voters. It’s not clear how long DeSantis – who had hoped to win Iowa outright and gain momentum in the race – would be able to continue.

The Iowa caucuses, which are the opening contest in the months-long Republican presidential primary process, begin at 8 p.m. EST. Trump's political strength heading into the Iowa caucuses, which come 426 days after he launched his 2024 campaign, tells a remarkable story of a Republican Party unwilling or unable to move on from him. On the eve of the caucuses, Trump predicted he would set a modern-day record for an Iowa Republican caucus with a margin-of-victory exceeding the nearly 13 percentage points that Bob Dole earned in 1988. Last month, some presidential campaigns were expecting close to 200,000 Republican voters to participate in the caucus. Associated Press writers Jill Colvin in Des Moines, Iowa, and Adriana Gomez Licon in Council Bluffs, Iowa, contributed to this report.

The final poll from Iowa’s premier pollster, Ann Selzer, has Trump at 48% followed by former South Carolina Gov. If the final outcome Monday night mirrors the poll, Trump will have won the highest Iowa GOP caucus vote share for a non-incumbent ever. A Haley win in the first primary race in the nation would indicate that Trump is not invincible. He did more than 5 points better than where his final Iowa poll had him. The 2024 Iowa Republican caucuses are just days away. As they have for decades, Iowa Republicans will kick off actual voting with a series of caucuses around the state's 99 counties. And yet, no candidate will have anywhere near the number of delegates needed to become the Republican presidential nominee. As for the winners, the last three winners of a competitive Iowa Republican caucus, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, and former Arkansas Gov. COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley pushed across ice-cold Iowa Saturday to find voters open to an alternative to former President Donald Trump with just two days before the state's caucuses open the Republican primary calendar. On the Democratic side, Barack Obama won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 and went on to win the White House. And Trump, although he’s the favorite in pre-caucus polling this year, lost the Iowa caucuses in 2016 to Cruz. Weren’t there some problems with the Iowa caucuses? This is the first time since 1972 that the Iowa caucuses will not be the first event on Democrats’ presidential nomination calendar. President Joe Biden, who placed fourth in the 2020 Iowa caucuses, pushed Democrats to change up the calendar.

Electric vehicles is the only industry on track to meet climate goals by 2030, a new report found. But a report published Tuesday found that the EV sector is on track to meet 2030 targets aimed at averting the worst impacts of the climate crisis. There's no indication that any other industry — including power, buildings, agriculture, and finance — will curb greenhouse-gas emissions enough to meet 2030 targets. People still need to drive less and take more buses and trains to reduce emissions, Hecke added. The report found that, collectively, countries would need to build the equivalent of three New York City transit systems a year until 2030 to meet climate goals.

CNN —Donald Trump is promising a second presidency that would be an aberration in American history. And Trump’s ambitions should be taken seriously because one year from the election, President Joe Biden’s reelection hopes are far from secure. He dehumanizes his political enemies, has discredited the legal, political and electoral system, has demonized the press and has targeted vulnerable members of society, minorities and immigrants, as scapegoats. With questionable historic comparisons, Trump’s critics only fuel his bid to provoke the outrage that is essential to his political appeal. Nikki Haley have only criticized Trump obliquely, understanding there’s no market in the modern Republican Party for confronting Trump’s lawlessness.
