Faryar Shirzad, chief policy officer at Coinbase, told CNBC he sees crypto legislation making its way through Congress "fairly quickly" after the Republican president-elect — who ran on a notoriously pro-crypto policy platform — enters the White House. "I think the combination should finally allow the 50 million Americans who own crypto to have their interests and voice heard in policy." Shirzad told CNBC he's "optimistic" the legislation will get passed, but noted there's only a "small" chance the crypto legislation is considered in the so-called "lame duck" post-election period. Crypto's lobbying powerTrump's election win marked a major victory for the crypto industry — but it also highlighted the power of the crypto lobbying machine. Meanwhile, the Coinbase-backed Stand With Crypto Alliance developed a grading system to determine how for or against crypto House and Senate candidates were.

As a modern energy company, it would be dedicated to “solving the global energy crisis,” its press statement reads. Unlike the Enron scandal, however, this one appears to be little more than performance art designed to sell branded hoodies. Publicly available documents show that an Akansas-based LLC called The College Company bought the Enron trademark for $275 in 2020. The strategist said “we’ll have more to share soon,” but declined to comment beyond the statement posted on the Enron site. In its statement, oddly posted as an image file on the Enron site, the company lays out its “bold new vision” to solving the world’s energy problems.

‘Brain rot’ is Oxford’s word of the year
  + stars: | 2024-12-02 | by ( Rosa Rahimi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
“Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37,000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot,” wrote Thoreau, “will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”All these years later, it seems brain rot is well and truly established. “’Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, in Monday’s announcement. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha… These communities have amplified the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot,’” he added. The word, which means being reserved in appearance or behavior, had already been named word of the year by Dictionary.com last week.

“In the law, there is a clear separation of church and state,” Childs, an attorney who represents the Houston area on the board, said of her decision. This year, Oklahoma’s top education official began ordering public schools with students in grades five through 12 to incorporate the Bible into lesson plans. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, a Republican, has purchased 500 Bibles and asked for $3 million from the state to buy copies for every classroom. “Public school is not Sunday school,” Wright said. Childs, the Texas State Board of Education member, sees the current push for increased religious influence in public schools as concerning, as it comes amid a dialing back of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at companies and institutions.

TikTok is defending itself in federal court over legislation President Joe Biden signed in April that would ban TikTok if it doesn’t sell itself to an American owner by the time Trump takes office. Most Trump allies who oppose TikTok have cited claims of Chinese government influence over American users, which TikTok denies. Six people were pulled alive from the rubble of a Missouri home Saturday morning after an unexplained explosion mangled the residence, authorities said. All six, said to have been inside the home in Jefferson City when it exploded, were taken to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, with moderate to severe injuries, the Jefferson City Fire Department said in a statement. Two of them were in bad enough shape that they were taken by helicopter for a faster trip to University Hospital trauma center. The Jefferson City Fire Department's Special Operations Rescue Team was enlisted to help pull victims from the rubble, it said. Oxford’s Word of the Year Is ‘Brain Rot’
  + stars: | 2024-12-01 | by ( Jennifer Schuessler | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
It’s not just you. Oxford University Press, the publisher of the august Oxford English Dictionary, is also going a bit fuzzy between the ears. After digging through its enormous database, it has chosen “brain rot” — specifically, the kind brought on by digital overload — as its 2024 Word of the Year. It’s been quite a journey for “brain rot,” which triumphed over a shortlist of contenders including “lore,” “demure,” “romantasy,” “dynamic pricing” and “slop.” According to Oxford, its earliest known appearance was in 1854, in “Walden,” Henry David Thoreau’s classic account of moving alone to a cabin in the woods. “While England endeavors to cure the potato-rot,” Thoreau lamented, “will not any endeavor to cure the brain-rot, which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”
