CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday revisited alcohol stocks, a sector he's been largely negative on throughout the year. While he said he's willing to consider that investors may have been too pessimistic about the industry, he's not ready to lend his full support to many of these companies. "I'm too concerned about the long-term challenges to pound the table on any of these names, especially Brown-Forman or Diageo," he said. According to Cramer, alcohol companies face a number secular challenges, such as changing trends in consumer behavior. Cramer also pointed out that several analysts upgraded a number of alcohol stocks, including Diageo — which owns liquor names like Ketel One and Smirnoff — as well as beer makers Molson Coors and Constellation Brands .

Since the early stages of Syria's bloody civil war that began in 2011, Iran has supported Syria's strongman president, Bashar Assad. Advancing in the face of Russian and Syrian airstrikes, they overran Syria's fourth-largest city, Hama, on Thursday. Earlier in the Syrian conflict, Iran helped orchestrate interventions on Assad's side by its powerful Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in 2013, and Russia in 2015. While Iran will undoubtedly remain committed to supporting Assad, it's unlikely to prove capable of organizing a 2016-style counteroffensive to recapture Aleppo. Century's Lund recalled that the last time Iran intervened to help Assad recapture Aleppo, it did so in close collaboration with Russia.

But as the country contends with a housing crisis, the fastest growing use of these spaces is apartment complexes, real estate developers said. At least a dozen more apartment projects are underway at malls across the country, including in California, Florida, Arizona and Texas. For developers, adding apartments can not only fill a need, but also bring people closer to their remaining retail stores and restaurants. The Lafayette Square Mall in Indianapolis is slated to open 1,200 apartment units, including affordable housing in a former Sears building, beginning in 2025. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has asked a court to dismiss the criminal case against him related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. “A sitting president is completely immune from indictment or any criminal process, state or federal,” Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow wrote in the filing. “Any ongoing criminal proceeding against a sitting president must be dismissed under the U.S. Constitution,” Sadow added in a statement. He noted that two federal criminal cases against Trump – over 2020 election interference and his handling of classified information – have already been dropped by the Justice Department. The Georgia Court of Appeals is considering whether Willis should be allowed to stay on the case, and is expected to issue a ruling by the spring.

That’s an unnerving reality for the United States military, which has nearly 30,000 troops and its largest overseas base in South Korea, serving as a check against a belligerent North Korea and counterweight to an aggressive China in a strategically critical region. ‘Major ramifications’The US-South Korea alliance has long been seen by both countries as a cornerstone of peace in the region, where North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and the US with its illegal weapons program. “Any instability in South Korea has major ramifications for our Indo-Pacific policies,” retired US Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, pointing to how US troops in the country are geared for a “fight tonight” scenario against North Korea. “We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise,” he said. And Yoon, who’s taken a harder line on North Korea than many of his predecessors, has been a willingly staunch partner of the US.

South Korea's foe, North Korea, could seek to exploit the turmoil. Kim Jong Un, North Korea's emboldened leader, is likely watching the events in South Korea closely and may use the turmoil to his benefit. Advertisement"We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise," he added. Kim could use the crisis to intimidate and undermine its neighbor, and drive a wedge between South Korea and the US, say analysts. "I would expect some rhetorical gloating about the superiority of North Korea's political system, but not much else," he said.

President Biden has put a special emphasis on South Korea, choosing it as the first non-U.S. site for his annual international conclave, the Summit for Democracy. And in 2023, he hosted President Yoon Suk Yeol for a state dinner at the White House, where the tuxedo-clad Mr. Yoon sang “American Pie” to an adoring audience. Mr. Biden has also relied on Mr. Yoon to provide munitions for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion. Now, with Mr. Yoon imposing martial law after wildly accusing the opposition party of conspiring with North Korea to undermine him, the American alliance with South Korea faces its biggest test in decades. The move aims to curb China's AI and defense tech growth, citing national security risks. Trump previously billed China as the main threat to the US AI industry. The US announced another round of export controls on China's semiconductor industry on Monday, multiple outlets reported, weeks ahead of Donald Trump's second term. Previous comments from Trump suggest he is aligned with the Biden administration when it comes to thwarting China's AI growth. In a June interview with social media personality Logan Paul, Trump billed China as the "main threat" to the US AI industry.

The retired detective was accused of using his position as a police officer in Kansas City, Kansas, to sexually assault vulnerable Black women over the course of decades. Prosecutors said in court filings that Golubski hand-picked his victims because he was confident they would never be believed. The second case accused him of being in cahoots with a drug kingpin in the sex trafficking of underage girls. Developments were chronicled on the front pages of the local newspaper, The Kansas City Star, and resulted in a crusading newspaper columnist winning one of journalism’s highest honors — a Pulitzer Prize. “This trial will turn entirely on victim credibility,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing last year.

Between stubbornly high mortgage rates and elevated prices, home buyers had a tough time navigating the housing market in 2024, but more changes could be coming next year, Zillow says. In a recent outlook, the real estate listings site forecast a handful of developments for next year's housing market, which they noted is still in the process of normalizing since the pandemic. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in a recent speech in Dallas that it is still too early to consider how Trump’s tariff plans would affect the US economy. Trump’s tariffs would almost certainly push up prices for imported goods like avocados, cars and tequila. Retaliatory tariffs and consumer perceptionsFed officials will eventually develop economic models of how the US economy could perform under different tariff scenarios. Two potential developments they’ll consider will be whether retaliatory tariffs emerge from Trump’s plans, if enacted, and if Americans believe inflation will pick up. Despite the better outlook on price increases, “consumers overwhelmingly selected higher prices as their top concern and lower prices as their top wish for the new year,” the Conference Board added.

The country of 3.7 million people has seen months of rising tension between the ruling Georgian Dream party and opponents who accuse it of pursuing increasingly authoritarian, anti-Western and pro-Russian policies. Opposition TV channel Formula showed footage of people in Khashuri, a town of 20,000 in central Georgia, throwing eggs at the local Georgian Dream office and tearing down the party’s flag. Georgian Dream says it is acting to defend the country’s sovereignty against outside interference. Georgia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that foreign states were trying to “interfere in the functioning of the institutions of a sovereign state”, and that this was unacceptable. But domestic opponents and Western governments have become increasingly concerned that Georgian Dream is intent – despite its denials – on abandoning that course.

CNN —At least 200 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on northern Gaza Saturday, according to local health officials, as the United Nations said it would pause aid deliveries through the enclave’s main crossing after more of its trucks were stolen. The figure is thought to be an underestimate, as much of northern Gaza is inaccessible and many casualties never arrive at a hospital to be counted. A source involved in transferring aid inside Gaza told CNN that a further five trucks loaded with flour were stolen near the crossing Sunday. Israeli authorities “must ensure aid flows into Gaza safely and must refrain from attacks on humanitarian workers,” he said. CNN has reached out to COGAT, the Israeli agency responsible for approving aid into Gaza, for comment.

Turkey wants the F-35s and may be willing to move the Russian air defenses that triggered the ban. Until five years ago, Turkey had planned to buy 100 of Lockheed Martin's F-35 stealth jets to modernize its air force. According to Bloomberg, Turkey may agree to restrict its Russian S-400s air defenses in return for the US lifting sanctions.
