That was in Maine in 2020, when voters re-elected Republican Sen. Susan Collins while backing Democrat Joe Biden for president. The first involves voters who were motivated to turn out for Trump, but then skipped all of the other races on the ballot. The other factor the GOP will need to address involves Democratic defectors — traditionally Democratic voters who have essentially made an exception for Trump.

Short bursts of movement throughout the day — no matter how small — can help the heart, especially for women, research published Tuesday found. On average, men in the study did 11 short bursts of vigorous activity during the day, some which lasted less than a minute, and women did about nine. Vigorous activity meant it was high intensity, said Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Sydney, who led the study. Women who got just under 3.5 minutes of vigorous movement a day, however, were found to have a 45% lower risk of any of the heart problems than women who didn’t log any vigorous movement throughout the day. Getting about 5.5 minutes of vigorous movement per day reduced their risk of a major heart problem by 16%.

The 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players in the 1990s will be deposed Wednesday after a judge ruled he was competent to be questioned about the allegations. They alleged that their coaches and trainers were aware that Bomba was subjecting basketball players to unnecessary prostate examinations and did nothing to stop him. Indiana University is represented by the Indianapolis-based Barnes & Thornburg law firm, university spokesperson Mark Bode wrote in an email. Bomba had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. The accusations that the university turned a blind eye to allegations that a team doctor was sexually abusing players echo a scandal involving a team doctor at a rival school.

A small asteroid sped toward Earth before burning out above far northeastern Russia on Tuesday night, sparking a natural light show for residents in that remote corner of the planet, officials said. A "nice fireball in the sky over northern Siberia" was reportedly spotted at 5:15 p.m. CET (11:15 a.m. ET) by residents in the Russian republic of Yakutia, ESA said. An 8-year-old boy has died after a statue fell on him outside the luxury Arizona Biltmore hotel, the Phoenix Police Department said. The boy's death was announced Monday, five days after he was struck in the head by the statue and hospitalized. Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday why the statue came apart and how the boy came to be hit by it, but they ruled out foul play, police said. The Biltmore hotel, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is part of a 39-acre resort spanning the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with views of palm trees and mountain ranges. The statue that collapsed was one of 19 "solemn sprites" sculptures on the grounds of the resort, KVOA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tuscon, Arizona, reported.

Police confirmed that the babies were the missing girls from the stolen vehicle, the news station reported. A dozen Moscow clubgoers were found guilty of “petty hooliganism” and detained following anti-LGBTQ "propaganda" raids by Russian security forces, according to Russian court documents and local news reports. An American woman is accused of fatally stabbing a man at a train station in southwest Germany, over 60 miles south of Frankfurt. In a statement on Monday, the Kaiserslautern Public Prosecutor’s Office said the incident took place at the Kaiserslautern Central Station on the afternoon of June 29. The woman followed the man, who grabbed the arm she was using to wield the knife, according to the prosecutor's office. The American woman said that she acted in self-defense and did not aim for the man’s heart, the prosecutor's office said. Amid an unprecedented cyberattack on telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon, U.S. officials have recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps to ensure their communications stay hidden from foreign hackers. A Central California woman died from rabies after she was bitten by a bat, officials said Tuesday, in the first fatality from the saliva-passed disease in her county in more than 30 years. Seneng, an art teacher, saw the bat in her classroom and didn't think anything of helping it get on its way, Splotch said. "She found it in her classroom before school started and, being a kind-hearted person, she didn't want to hurt any animals. This rabies death was the first in Fresno County since 1992, according to deputy health officer Dr. Trinidad Solis. "Rabies is 100% preventable if individuals seek medical care right away," Solis told reporters last week, shortly after Seneng's passing.

An Indian American photographer is speaking out about a video he captured of a woman verbally attacking his family with racist slurs on a United Airlines shuttle bus. The E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers is over, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. Since the investigation began Oct. 22, 104 cases of E. coli in 14 states were identified. California-based Taylor Farms distributed the onions linked to the outbreak and served at McDonald’s restaurants in several states, according to the Food and Drug Administration. A McDonald’s spokesperson said that all Quarter Pounders were pulled from the restaurants in the 14 states when the outbreak was announced in October. The high school freshman’s initial symptoms — fever and stomach pain — began just days after she visited McDonald’s several times for her favorite meal: a Quarter Pounder with cheese and extra pickles.

The Federal Trade Commission announced that it is taking action against two location data companies after it said that they unlawfully tracked and sold private consumer information. Venntel and Gravy Analytics Inc., Venntel's parent company, are banned from “selling, disclosing, or using sensitive location data in any product or service,” a proposed order from the FTC states. The companies must also establish a sensitive data location program. A complaint alleges that Venntel and Gravy Analytics violated the FTC Act by collecting and selling consumer data without proper consent. The companies must also delete all sensitive data already collected if it is not compliant with the FTC's proposed order.

American model Alex Consani was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards on Monday night, becoming the first openly transgender person to win the esteemed accolade. “I’m the first trans woman to win this award!” she exclaimed to the audience. She is thought to be the youngest openly trans model to sign with a major modeling agency, having signed with IMG Models in 2019 at just 15 years old. And in October, she became one of the first openly trans models to walk in the iconic Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, along with Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio. The other winners at this year’s Fashion Awards included Jonathan Anderson, the creative director for LVMH fashion house Loewe, for the Designer of the Year award and Tom Ford for the Outstanding Achievement Award.

A former ballerina who was convicted of manslaughter in what she claimed was the self-defense killing of her estranged husband was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison. Ashley Benefield, 33, had faced a maximum sentence of 30 years in the fatal shooting of Doug Benefield, 58, at her Florida home on Sept. 27, 2020. Benefield was also sentenced to 10 years of probation after her prison sentence, NBC affiliate WFLA in Tampa reported. In trial testimony, she described her husband as controlling and volatile, with a history of abusive behavior. Benefield sought a second injunction in 2020 that accused her husband of child abuse.

But that penny-pinching mentality hasn’t been enough to lift sales for Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Dollar Tree is also exploring selling off Family Dollar, its more grocery-focused brand. Family Dollar, which Dollar Tree acquired in 2015 for nearly $9 billion, is found in more urban areas and sells more food and household staples. The company plans to close about 1,000 Family Dollar stores and is exploring a potential sale of the business. Dollar Tree has more than 16,000 stores, while Dollar General has nearly 20,000 locations across the U.S.
