Despite the concerning top-line numbers, the Times/Siena College polls do offer some hope and a road map to Biden’s victory. The other issue Biden wins more trust than Trump on is the handling of “democracy,” according to the new polls. Biden made democracy a key issue in the closing weeks of the 2022 midterms. For those who want Biden to win in 2024, you can’t ignore the polls but shouldn’t be panicked by them. The Biden campaign needs to do its part in terms of campaigning on the key issues and building an effective ground game.

House Republicans kick off their impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden on Thursday, but a majority of voters do not believe the process should move forward. In a new national NBC News poll, 56% of registered voters say Congress should not hold hearings to start the process of removing Biden from office, while 39% say it should. An overwhelming majority of Democrats (88%) oppose the hearings, while 73% of Republicans support them. Just 35% of GOP voters say support for impeachment would make them more likely to support a lawmaker. But 62% of Democrats say voting to impeach Biden would make them less likely to support a member of Congress.

Voters overwhelmingly say they trust Republicans to do a better job than Democrats dealing with border security, crime, the economy and immigration, a new national NBC News poll finds. Still, Republicans have advantages on the issues with the widest margins — dealing with border security and with crime. But independent voters polled agree that Republicans are better at dealing with crime (by 19 points) and with the economy (by 25 points). Voters in swing states agreed that Republicans are better at dealing with the economy, crime, border security, immigration, protecting democracy and protecting constitutional rights. Moderates, who make up 34% of the total poll sample, agreed with the topline results on all but two issues — protecting constitutional rights and protecting democracy.

A 60% majority of registered voters indicated in the poll that they do not consider Biden "mentally up for the job" of being president. Majorities of registered voters said they disapproved of how Biden has handled the economy (59%), inflation (63%) and growth of the middle class (58%), according to the poll. Nearly two-thirds of registered voters, 63%, said they viewed the strength of the U.S. economy negatively, including 36% who called it "poor." Inflation is a major pain point: 74% of respondents said it has moved in the wrong direction over the past year. Most voters, 86%, said the cost of housing has gone in the wrong direction over the past year.

CNN —Much remains unknown of course about the presidential general election whose traditional kick-off will come one year from today on Labor Day, 2024. Twenty states have likewise voted for the GOP presidential nominee in all four of those contests. That means 40 of the 50 states, or 80%, have voted the same way in four consecutive presidential elections. In the presidential elections of 2012, 2016 and 2020, though, the states where the margin of victory landed within four points of the national vote total dwindled. Eventually a Democratic choice to write off Florida and Ohio could provide a tactical benefit for the GOP presidential nominee.

At a more fundamental level, Bateman wrote:It’s not at all clear that what most Republican voters (rather than donors) want is a mainstream and party credentialed version of Trump. The problem with this approach, Ayres continued, is that “the Always Trump voters are ‘Always Trump’ for a reason — they are not going to settle for the second-best Trump if they can get the real thing.”Geoff Garin, a Democratic pollster, wrote:There is no room for DeSantis or anyone else to outflank Trump on the right, where Trump has his most loyal base. While surveys now usually show Biden leading Trump, the president’s margin rarely exceeds his four-point margin of victory from 2020. Instead, the pandemic quickly evolved into just another front in the preexisting culture war lines of division between the parties.
