Delta Air Lines to Offer Free Wi-Fi Starting in February
  + stars: | 2023-01-06 | by ( Alison Sider | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
About 80% of Delta’s U.S. domestic mainline fleet will be equipped to launch the offering at the start of February. Delta Air Lines Inc. said it plans to begin offering free wireless internet starting Feb. 1, part of a broader new entertainment package that is likely to intensify competition over airlines’ in-flight offerings. Delta Chief Executive Ed Bastian said Thursday that about 80% of Delta’s U.S. domestic mainline fleet will be equipped to launch the free offering at the start of next month, with more aircraft being added weekly. The airline said free Wi-Fi will be available on more than 700 planes by the end of this year, with the service expanding to all of Delta’s international and regional planes by the end of next year.
Delta Air Lines is rolling out free Wi-Fi

New York CNN —Delta Air Lines is rolling out free Wi-Fi to most of its planes beginning February 1. Customers will know if their flight has free Wi-Fi by a decal noting it near the boarding door. It has been testing free Wi-Fi over the past several years, and made messaging free in 2017. Delta is the first of the “Big Three” airlines to offer free Wi-Fi: United Airlines and American Airlines (AAL) both charge varying rates for access. JetBlue (JBLU) has offered free Wi-Fi since 2017.

Rail workers nearly went on strike over paid sick leave. Glen Stubbe / Star Tribune via AP fileMore than 100,000 rail workers were days away from a likely strike after the rail companies refused demands for five paid sick days. Labor experts and organizers say the pandemic aimed a floodlight at the public health ramifications of in-person work, elevating for workers the importance of paid leave in contract disputes. “This was the sticking point for the railroads.”Following Congress’ resolution of the impasse, activist investors have put forth proposals to get two of the biggest rail companies, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, to offer their workers paid sick leave next year. “We appreciate the work of the negotiating teams and the mediator in reaching this agreement in principle.”Other unions are paying attention to these fights — and gearing up to make sick leave a major part of their negotiations.
Delta, pilots reach labor deal with 34% pay hike
  + stars: | 2022-12-05 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The Atlanta-based carrier’s pilots have been working without a new contract for nearly three years after their old contract became amendable in December 2019, fueling frustration. With the industry returning to profitability, pilots argue airlines can pay them more to cover their increased costs of living. In the draft agreement, Delta promises that pay rates for its pilots will exceed those at United and American by at least 1%. In a memo to its members, the union representing Delta pilots said the deal represents more than $7.2 billion of cumulative value increases over the next four years. Hundreds of United pilots picketed outside Chicago’s O’Hare airport on Thursday, asking for an “industry-leading” contract.
Delta Air Lines Inc. is offering pilots raises amounting to at least 34% over the term of a proposed deal, another sign of how pilots are pushing the now-booming airline industry for better pay and other benefits. The proposal still needs to be approved by union leaders and then would have to be ratified by Delta’s pilots. But an agreement would set a bar for rivals that are also trying to hammer out new contracts in what has effectively become an industrywide standoff between airlines and pilots’ unions.
The airline said it saw a record number of visitors to its Sky Clubs in 2022 and hasn’t been able to keep up with long lines. For some Delta Sky Club denizens, free cookies, carrot sticks, wine and Wi-Fi at the airline’s lounges may soon be a perk of the past. Delta Air Lines is overhauling its requirements for fliers to access its airport lounges in an effort to stymie overcrowding, an issue raised often by customers. The airline said Wednesday it saw a record number of visitors to its Sky Clubs in 2022 and hasn’t been able to keep up with the long lines for food and seating.
One day after Delta Air Lines pilots authorized a potential strike, United Airlines pilots rejected a tentative contract agreement, setting the stage for possible work stoppages as the busy holiday travel season approaches. Delta pilots voted Monday for a strike if necessary in order to secure a new contract with the nation's second-largest carrier. In a statement, Delta said Monday's strike authorization vote would not affect customers and that under federal labor law, a strike cannot occur until certain conditions are met. According to a statement, pilots will immediately begin a series of informational picketing events as they work to rally support. Pilot scheduling issues are one of the reasons air travel in 2022 has been beset by delays and cancellations, he said.
Starbucks customers can now earn Delta SkyMiles
  + stars: | 2022-10-12 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN Business —Starbucks customers can now earn more than just “stars” for their purchases. Customers must first link their Starbucks Rewards and Delta SkyMiles accounts on a special website in order to start receiving miles on purchases made at US Starbucks locations. As another perk, on days that members are scheduled to fly Delta, they will earn double stars, or rewards points, on their Starbucks orders. Starbucks (SBUX) has more than 27 million US members and Delta (DAL) has around 100 million global members (the airline doesn’t break out numbers for the US). Expanding Starbucks Rewards is a goal for the company because it gives the chain access to customers’ data and ordering habits, which in turn helps the company target members with deals.
September has been off to a good start, Mr. Janki said at a conference last week. Consumer demand remains strong and corporate travel—an important income generator for Delta before the pandemic—is recovering, Mr. Janki said. “We are keenly focused on continuing to strengthen the balance sheet and drive debt down,” Mr. Janki said. Adjusted net debt stood at $19.6 billion at the end of the second quarter, Delta said. Mr. Janki wants his 600-people strong finance team to rely more on data and improve its systems, including streamlining information in the cloud.
