☆ Disney and DirecTV strike deal to restore ABC, ESPN and other networks

CNN —A short but tense distribution dispute between Disney and DirecTV came to an end Saturday after the two sides agreed to a new deal that will restore Disney-owned channels, including ABC, ESPN and FX, to the satellite TV provider. DirecTV stopped airing Disney-owned channels on September 1, denying sports fans the ability to watch NFL games on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” and US Open tennis on ABC. The companies said the distribution deal will include new options for customers, including new packages that include the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ streaming services. DirecTV will also be able to distribute the forthcoming ESPN standalone streaming service at no extra cost to DirecTV customers. Last week, DirecTV filed a complaint Saturday with the Federal Communications Commission alleging Disney did not negotiate in good faith.

In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, during a White House visit in April, told reporters that the legal reviews would determine the deal’s outcome. US Steel put itself up for sale in 2023 after receiving an unsolicited, $7 billion takeover offer from Ohio-based Cleveland Cliffs. McDonald’s will extend its $5 value meal into December in most U.S. markets as it looks to win back lower-income consumers. Franchisees have been voting on extending the value meal, and roughly 80% of local markets have opted to extend the deal into December. The value meal offers a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, small fries, four-piece chicken nuggets and a small soft drink for $5. The restaurant sector focused on value this summer, as companies including McDonald’s, Burger King and even Starbucks attempted to lure consumers in with discounted offerings. Among other benefits increases, the contract would increase union members’ pay by last least 25% over four years. Union members have launched a series of protests this week outside of Boeing plants and may ultimately reject the new contract union leaders negotiated with Boeing management. The deal will be officially approved if more than 50% of the members vote in favor of the tentative agreement. That would prevent a strike, no matter how many workers vote to strike. If just more than a third of members vote against a strike, then the contract takes effect, no matter the results of the ratification vote.
