After 23 years in corporate America, I decided I needed a career change and signed up for a course. AdvertisementCareer change, shift, pivot. During one marathon search session, I stumbled upon Careershifters and paid $1,175 for its eight-week Career Change Launch Pad course. I was eight months into my career shift before I felt confident about what I wanted. Simply expanding that bubble a little bit opened my mind to new possibilities for my career shift.

He and his wife felt it would be unsafe to raise their child there and decided to move to Japan. He finds Japan more affordable, safe, and is happy to be living near his wife's family — but he's scared of bullying. AdvertisementMy wife was already six months pregnant when we agreed she would leave the US and have our baby in Japan. I want him to learn to speak Japanese fluently and feel safe enough to enjoy his childhood to its fullest. As a professor myself and after a 20-year long career in education, I have read studies that note the lack of critical thinking taught in Japanese high schools.

President Biden traveled on Thursday to North Carolina, a possible swing state in the fall election, to promote his efforts to replace toxic lead pipes as part of his administration’s program to expand and upgrade the nation’s network of roads, airports and other critical infrastructure. “Until the United States of America, God love us, deals with this, how can we say we’re a leading nation in the world?” he told a crowd of supporters at the Wilmington Convention Center. “For God’s sake, we’re better than this.”Mr. Biden has committed to replacing all lead pipes across the nation within a decade. Lead exposure can affect brain development in children, damage kidneys and interfere with the production of red blood cells that carry oxygen. The administration estimates that more than nine million homes, schools, day care centers and businesses still receive water through lead pipes, particularly in communities of marginalized people.

The bill, called the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, is the first attempt to police warehouse quotas at the federal level, after similar laws have passed in states including California, New York, Washington and Minnesota. The legislation would require employers to be more transparent about workplace quotas and potential disciplinary consequences, and provide workers with at least two business days' notice of any changes to quotas or workplace surveillance. Wendy Taylor, a packer at an Amazon warehouse in Missouri, said during Markey's press conference on Thursday that she and others are "fighting for quota transparency." Taylor blamed Amazon's "inhumane work rates" for the injury, and added, "Amazon workers provide same-day shipping, but we can't even get the same-day care we deserve." A day care would've been cheaper and we would've done less admin work. At day care, she'd be one of 10 babies in a class, which I (incorrectly) assumed would mean a lower level of care. So yes, if we had been set on using a nanny instead of day care, doing a share would have saved us money. Related storiesBut a nanny share compared to day care? For us, that was the final straw on the big pile of reasons to stop the nanny share.

In January 2022, I was planning a summer trip to Ukraine and Russia for my 4-year-old son and me. I spent half of my childhood in Ukraine and half in Russia before moving to the United States when I was a teenager. When I became a parent, my one, obsessive goal — as a mother raising a child in America with a man who spoke only English — was to teach my son Russian. He started inserting English words in otherwise Russian sentences and talking to himself in English while playing alone. A visit to Ukraine and Russia would allow him to see that his mother’s native language wasn’t a quirk of hers but something normal for millions of people.

CNN —Despite working a full-time job in human relations and caring for her 6-year-old son Chase and 3-year-old daughter Millie, Anne Helmes often feels isolated and lonely. In fact, 66% of 1,005 surveyed parents felt the demands of parenthood sometimes or frequently left them feeling isolated and lonely, while nearly 40% felt as if they have no one to support them in their parenting role. “When parents are feeling lonely and isolated, that tells me their adult needs aren’t being met because they’re pouring what they can into their child. By definition, burnout is an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion, Gawlik said. “Burnout is not new for parents, but I think the pandemic took it to a totally different level,” she added.

A nanny share is when two or more families have one nanny taking care of their kids. Finally, even though you save money compared to a private nanny, shares still tend to be more expensive than larger childcare environments. There are a lot of logisticsYou have flexibility with a nanny share, but that also means you have to sort through logistics. My family loves having a nanny shareAs with most decisions, there are pros and cons to nanny shares. Since we all have different preferences and priorities, whether to move forward with a nanny share will depend on how you personally weigh the pros and cons.

As one might imagine, there are a number of significant differences between German daycares and American daycares. AdvertisementThe cost of day care depends on where you liveThe costs for day care differ throughout Germany based on your location. In some areas, day care for children from either ages 1 and up or ages 2 and up is completely free. Another interesting thing is that kids brush their teeth before naptime at German day care — you'll see adorable little toothbrushes all lined up in the bathrooms. I've definitely observed with my own kids how their day care experiences made them more independent at home.

For a while, Kelly couldn't figure out whether there would be a recession, given how mixed signals were muddying the waters. Most economists now agree that there won't be a downturn, but one of the main explanations Kelly gave as to why may be shocking. Besides adding jobs, which tends to boost economic growth, Kelly noted that the presence of cheap workers has kept a lid on wage growth and, by extension, inflation. "But you could say that it has widened the runway for the soft landing. It's made it easier for us to achieve a soft landing."

Being on leave gives you time to think with some distance from everyday life. I have been financially supported during my parental leave and as my children grow. The organization advocates for company and government policy that supports working parents. All companies offered some form of childcare benefits — stipends, on-site care, or backup care. And, for each company, its annual net return for childcare benefits far outweighed the cost. But, when a company offers childcare benefits, retaining just 1% of eligible working parents could cover the price a company pays for those benefits, the study said. Childcare benefits boost employees' career prospects and earning potentialNot only do childcare benefits support a company's bottom line, but the study shows it improves the earning potential and career growth of individual employees.

Some DINKs are using their higher net worth to retire early, travel, and afford luxury items. But there's an even darker side to DINKs: The slice that forgoes kids not by choice but out of necessity. It's difficult to parse out the exact number of Americans who might want kids but can't have them. We know that the childfree group — people who don't want kids — might be about 20% of the US adult population. It's contributing to a whole population of DINKs who can't afford to shed the moniker.
