Donald Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani is set to answer more questions after facing a grilling last week at a contempt-of-court hearing stemming from his failure to surrender valuable items to satisfy a $146 million defamation judgment against him. At stake is whether Giuliani should be held in contempt for defying court orders to surrender valuable items, including a New York Yankees jersey autographed by Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio. Freeman and Moss have asked U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman to find Giuliani in civil contempt for failing to hand over the jersey and other items intended to supplement their $146 million judgment against him. The pair was awarded the sum in their defamation lawsuit against Giuliani, who they said had spread falsities about Trump’s election loss in 2020 resulting in an onslaught of racist and violent threats against them. New York CNN —Donald Trump is appealing Judge Juan Merchan’s two rulings that dismissed his attempts to toss his conviction in the hush money case, and the president-elect is seeking a stay of Friday’s scheduled sentencing. Trump’s appeal comes on the same day that he will be certified as the winner of the 2024 presidential election – and four years since he tried to overturn his election loss and his supporters rioted at the US Capitol. On Friday, Merchan rejected Trump’s attempt to throw out his conviction because he’s been elected president, scheduling Trump’s sentencing in the hush money case for Friday – though Merchan made clear he would not sentence Trump to any jail time. Trump’s lawyers argued that the sentencing must be put on hold while his appeals play out. Last month, however, Merchan rejected Trump’s attempt to dismiss the case on the basis of presidential immunity.

Some of those rioters called for then-Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged as he declined to contest the results of the 2020 election. Even as Harris will certify Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, the president-elect has telegraphed plans to grant pardons to those convicted for their roles in the Capitol riot. Most recently, Vice President Al Gore certified his own razor-thin loss to President George W. Bush in 2001, rejecting multiple objections by lawmakers on behalf of his own candidacy. When I started following Nikki Glaser in early December as she began putting together her Golden Globes monologue, she planned a joke that never made it into Sunday’s awards show about shouting out Harrison Ford and then saying, “Harrison Ford is here to show us a cool rock he found.”It was more off-kilter than her usual material, and it absolutely delighted Glaser. She told her staff that this was a different kind of laugh they should embrace: “Don’t be scared to be weird.”You saw evidence of this in her stellar monologue at the Globes that included the kind of hard punchlines she is known for, including a good insult of Paramount+, a joke about the effect of Sean Combs’s arrest on the after-party and a sharp feminist shot at the Globes for ignoring women for best director in past years (two, Coralie Fargeat and Payal Kapadia, are nominated this year). But there was also a new bit added in the last week: an impression of Adam Sandler pronouncing Timothée Chalamet’s name that was just pure silliness. She even got Sandler to join in. Glaser doesn’t usually do impressions, but she committed and it went over really well, adding to a celebratory, fun tone to kick the night off.
