PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ third straight 100-win season led to a third consecutive postseason flop. “There’s some things with the format that people can dissect or whatever, but the bottom line is that the last two years we’ve got outplayed in the postseason,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers won the NL West in 10 of those seasons, yet their only World Series in that span was following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Dodgers need to win three consecutive games to avoid the embarrassment of a second NLDS defeat in two seasons. Just about everything has gone right for the Diamondbacks, who have scored nine first-inning runs in two games and have limited Dodgers starters Clayton Kershaw and Bobby Miller to a combined two innings. Evan Phillips (2-4) pitched the 10th inning and Joe Kelly got the final three outs. There was debate before the season if San Diego might be ready to take over the NL West from the Dodgers after its heavy offseason spending. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Juan Soto hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the ninth inning, and the San Diego Padres rallied from an early five-run deficit for an 11-8 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Manny Machado homered twice for the Padres, who beat their playoff-bound rivals for only the third time in 11 meetings this season. The victory was a rare moment of satisfaction for the underachieving Padres, who eliminated the Dodgers from last year's playoffs before regressing this season. Max Muncy also hit his 35th homer, but Los Angeles’ patchwork pitching staff squandered a 7-2 lead. A ‘Perfect Marriage’ Between Team and Player

The harmonic convergence between the resurrected Jason Heyward and the rampaging Los Angeles Dodgers crystallized beautifully one evening in Baltimore last month. It was in the top of the second inning at Camden Yards when Heyward smashed a three-run home run off the right-hander Tyler Wells, opening the gates to a five-run inning. And the Dodgers, being the Dodgers, adjusted accordingly. “I told him the situation, that my bet was that they were going to use a lefty the rest of the way,” said Manager Dave Roberts. “I told him, ‘You did your job to help us win this game.’ And he was like, ‘Doc, I’m in.’”

LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts was returning from paternity leave, his car was stuck in Chicago freeway gridlock for what seemed like an eternity and he arrived at Wrigley Field late for that night’s game. The Los Angeles Dodgers knew in advance that Betts would miss the first pitch against the Cubs. And Manager Dave Roberts had put Betts on notice that once he arrived he was going to be playing shortstop for the first time in his major league career — and for the first time at any level in 10 years. So which was more harrowing for Betts, an All-Star outfielder and Most Valuable Player Award winner: the anxiety of being caught in traffic while the game was starting, or playing shortstop in the majors for the first time? Roberts, in his ninth season as the Dodgers’ manager, is known for his superhuman-like communication with his players.
CNN —Dusty Baker was sitting in the dugout, looking down and making a note when his coaching and support staff spontaneously mobbed him, chanting his name, as the Houston Astros secured victory in the World Series on Saturday. “I mean, I got 2,000 wins and all they talk about is I haven’t won the World Series yet, you know?” he said before the game, according to MLB.com. David J. Phillip/APWith this victory, Baker became the third Black manager to win the World Series after Dave Roberts and Cito Gaston. Fans hold up a sign for Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker during Game 6. Before coaching, Baker enjoyed a successful playing career, winning the World Series in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and his 40 years in between titles is the most between any two consecutive World Series won as a player or manager, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
