A family businessThis picture shows Illinois Senator Dave Koehler with teenager Shreya Nallamothu, who helped inspire new legislation protecting child influencers. Although children are predominantly featured in these monetized videos, parents have had no legal obligation to give them any portion of the earnings. “But we know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetize kids being on videos. That California law required parents to set aside a portion of 15% of child earnings in a blocked trust account that the child actor could access after the age of 18. “Even though Illinois is the first state to pass such a law, this legislation is a long time coming,” Maddox said.

CNN —Robert Bowers, the gunman who killed 11 worshippers and wounded six others at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018, was unanimously sentenced to death by a federal jury on Wednesday. The jury further found he was eligible for the death penalty on July 13, moving the trial to a third and final sentencing stage. “This is a case that calls for the most severe punishment under the law – the death penalty,” he said. In court, those who survived the shooting testified about hiding in closets and listening to the final words of their friends and loved ones. This is the second federal death penalty case to be prosecuted under the administration of President Joe Biden, who had criticized the death penalty on the campaign trail.

CNN —Texas’s ban on TikTok at state institutions violates the First Amendment, claims a lawsuit filed Thursday by a group of academics and civil society researchers. The lawsuit specifically challenges Texas’ TikTok ban in relation to public universities, saying it compromises academic freedom and impedes vital research. Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered all Texas state agencies to ban the use of TikTok in early December. The Knight Institute lawsuit notes that Texas has not imposed a ban on other online platforms that collect similar user data, such as Meta and Google. TikTok told CNN last month that it is funding the suit by users and creators on the platform.

They told him they were walking from their homes to Kroger, the nearest grocery store — which was at least a 25- to 30-minute walk. That got Miller thinking about building a grocery store, or even just a shed to sell fresh food from at a lower cost. He learned the city land committee had taken over the abandoned structure and that, way back when, it had been a grocery store called Abraham Grocery. Athletics acquire land for Las Vegas ballpark

Athletics president Dave Kaval said the team was pushing ahead with plans for a new stadium in Las Vegas after the process to build a waterfront ballpark in Oakland stalled. "We have a pact in Las Vegas that we think can work and has the support from the league, so we are really putting all our focus in Las Vegas and the efforts there." MLB is the latest major sport league eager to get in on the Las Vegas action. "In 2021, given the continued lack of progress, MLB instructed the A's to explore a parallel path plan with Las Vegas. "We support the A’s turning their focus on Las Vegas and look forward to them bringing finality to this process by the end of the year."
The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement to acquire land near the Las Vegas Strip and said Wednesday that they hoped to be playing games in a new, billion-dollar retractable roof stadium on the site by 2027. The agreement on the 49-acre site in Nevada, which the team’s president, Dave Kaval, confirmed to The Las Vegas Review-Journal on Wednesday night, will seemingly end years of tense negotiations for a new stadium in the Bay Area, an investment the team said it needed to remain financially viable and competitive with its peers in Major League Baseball. “It’s obviously a very big milestone for us,” Kaval said of the potential move to Las Vegas, which would be the first relocation of a major league franchise in two decades. “We spent almost two years working in Las Vegas to try to determine a location that works for a long-term home. To identify a site and have a purchase agreement is a big step.”
CNN —Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Oakland Athletics have signed a binding purchase agreement for land near the Las Vegas Strip, where the team plans to construct a Major League ballpark, according to reports from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and The Athletic, citing Athletics team president Dave Kaval. Dara Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal he encountered problems that discouraged drivers. He was surprised to find out just how many issues there were – and how unpleasant some riders could be. Khosrowshahi told the Journal he had a five-star rating for the 100-odd rides and deliveries he'd completed around San Francisco. The Uber CEO said he would try to keep customers happy by offering phone charging cables and serving up Spotify playlists featuring artists including Taylor Swift and The National. Khosrowshahi told the Journal that some drivers had returned in response to economic uncertainty, which was yet to have an impact on rider demand.
After five years running Uber Technologies Inc., Dara Khosrowshahi in September got behind the wheel himself. Using the alias “Dave K” and a gray Tesla Model Y that he purchased secondhand, the chief executive made dozens of trips as a ride-share driver in the following months ferrying people around the hills of San Francisco.
Satoshi Nakamoto is said to be the inventor of bitcoin and wrote the token's original white paper in 2008. Nakamoto's paper, "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System," was published in October 2008. In his white paper, Nakamoto cited the work of Stuart Haber, a computer scientist credited with helping invent blockchain technology. A Newsweek article in 2014 said that Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto, a Japanese American man living in California, was the elusive inventor of bitcoin. After the article published, Nakamoto's online account revived itself after a five-year hiatus, stating: "I am not Dorian Nakamoto."
"I'm all for free and fair trade," said Fred Huddlestun, who grows GM corn and soybeans in Yale, Illinois. Supporters of the policy say GM corn can contaminate Mexico's age-old native varieties and have questioned its impact on human health. NCGA said GM corn is safe and it will fight all illegal trade barriers for farmers. But many would consider growing more non-GM corn, if the price were right. "You need to make it worth my while," said Illinois farmer Dave Kestel, who grows GM corn and sells seed for Corteva.

Kimbell said that consumer spending across income levels remained strong in the fourth quarter and that customers are not trading down to cheaper options, despite higher prices on the company's products. Same-store sales grew 15.6% in the fourth quarter, slower growth than the 21.4% jump it posted in the same quarter the previous year, but well above analysts' estimates of 8.4%, according to StreetAccount. Beauty retailer Ulta Beauty Inc. has tapped Michelle Crossan-Matos, a former Samsung Electronics America marketing leader, as its new chief marketing officer. The chief marketing officer role was previously held by Shelley Haus, who died of cancer last June. Most recently, Ms. Crossan-Matos was chief marketing, citizenship and communications officer at Samsung Electronics America. “I think beauty care is probably going to be one of the most resilient categories, and then I think Ulta Beauty will be even more resilient, just because of the portfolio that Ulta Beauty has and the type of guests that come in—they tend to be much more resilient,” Ms. Crossan-Matos said. Ulta will stay focused on social media, video, beauty tutorials and experience-based marketing in the year ahead, said Ms. Crossan-Matos.
They were victorious in all six states that featured ballot initiatives around abortion access this year. If approved, it would require a 60% threshold of support for future ballot measures to pass, as opposed to the current majority. Ballot initiative groups say that’s the point. Critics have alleged the measure amounts to a test run for a more comprehensive measure that would raise the threshold for all such constitutional ballot initiatives. “They’re trying to use ballot measures — to change ballot measures,” said Fields Figueredo of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center.

According to NBC, Leno joked to reporters outside the venue, “We got two shows tonight. Regular and extra crispy.”This week’s interview will appear on NBC News’ “Today” show on Wednesday.
