The total assets of TD Bank’s two U.S. banking subsidiaries will be barred from exceeding $434 billion under that restriction. “Today, TD Bank also became the largest bank in U.S. history to plead guilty to Bank Secrecy Act program failures, and the first US bank in history to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering,” Garland said. “TD Bank chose profits over compliance with the law — a decision that is now costing the bank billions of dollars in penalties. “In August 2021, a TD Bank store manager emailed another store manager and remarked, quote, ‘You guys really need to shut this down. “This settlement lets bad bank executives off the hook for allowing TD Bank to be used as a criminal slush fund.

A TD bank stands in Brooklyn on June 04, 2024 in New York City. TD Bank is reportedly expected to pay a whopping $3 billion in fines to the Department of Justice and financial crimes regulators to settle a federal probe over its alleged failure to monitor money laundering by drug cartels. TD Bank, whose U.S. unit is the 10th-largest American bank by assets, is also set to accept limits on its growth as part of the settlement, according to the report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday night. The reported restrictions on TD Bank's growth would be similar to those imposed by the Federal Reserve on Wells Fargo in 2018 over what the Fed called "widespread consumer abuses" at that bank. TD Bank shares were down more than 3% midday Thursday.

Kalshi wagers on the presidential race outcomes were split 50-50, roughly reflecting national polling on the contest. The new contracts were added to Kalshi's platform within days of a favorable federal appeals court ruling for the company on Oct 2. Even more political races could soon become available for betting with Kalshi contracts, the CFTC said, citing contract terms published on the exchange's web site. But the commission argues that Kalshi's contracts might cast doubt on the integrity of elections. The appeals court initially blocked that judge's ruling from taking effect, which meant Kalshi could not offer any political contracts.

States sue TikTok over app's effect on kids' mental health

Schwalb's suit alleges a slew of "profound" mental health risks are posed to teens and children by compulsive TikTok use, including depression, anxiety, sleep loss and body dysmorphia. "TikTok knows that its design features make its App more addictive and keep users engaged for longer," the suit in D.C. Superior Court alleges. The complaint also says that in 2019, the company introduced "two new dangerous features": a live-streaming feature called TikTok LIVE and a virtual currency system called TikTok "Coins." TikTok incentivizes users to go LIVE by promising these monetary rewards 'the more popular [their] content becomes.'" The suit says that TikTok "earns substantial revenue" from its Coins, charging commissions of up to 50% on each transaction.

Supreme Court rejects Martin Shkreli fine appeal

The Supreme Court in rejecting that request did not explain its reason for doing so. Shkreli's request that the Supreme Court take his appeal of federal court decision was his last chance to overturn the penalty related to the drug Daraprim . People pass outside the U.S. Supreme Court on October 7, 2024 in Washington, DC. Shkreli in June asked the Supreme Court to hear his appeal of that ruling, but only as it applied to the financial penalty. The attorney said that the Supreme Court should hear Shkreli's appeal to resolve the so-called circuit split on the question of a defendant's financial liability.

Almost all of the creditors of failed crypto company FTX will end up profiting from the money they put into the exchange, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled Monday. Ray, who also shepherded Enron through bankruptcy, added that the estate is working to finalize arrangements to make distributions to creditors around the world. FTX previously estimated that it owes creditors around $11.2 billion. According to the plan approved by Delaware bankruptcy Judge John Dorsey, 98% of FTX's creditors will get 119% of the amount of their allowed claim as of November 2022, when the exchange filed for bankruptcy protection. The bankruptcy estate says it will make a separate announcement about the date the payout plan will go into effect and when it anticipates the start of distributions.

Appeals court greenlights betting on congressional elections
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( Dan Mangan | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A federal appeals court on Wednesday refused to block a lower-court ruling allowing Americans to bet on the outcome of the 2024 congressional elections. The CFTC had barred KalshiEx from listing its congressional contracts on the exchange, which the commission regulates, on the ground that they would violate the laws of many states that ban gambling on elections. But a judge in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., ruled last month that the CFTC had erred in finding that KalshiEx's congressional contracts involved gaming or gambling. That ruling was in effect for only about eight hours before the D.C. appeals court stayed it at the request of the CFTC. That administrative stay was lifted in Wednesday's ruling.

The United States has seen indications that Iran is preparing to "imminently" launch a ballistic missile attack on Israel on the heels of Israel's ground incursion into south Lebanon, a senior White House official told NBC News on Tuesday,The White House official warned that any direct attack on Israel by Iran "will carry severe consequences for Iran." Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the press at Trump Tower in New York City, U.S., September 26, 2024. REUTERS/David Dee DelgadoDonald Trump on Friday called for Google to be criminally prosecuted for what the Republican presidential nominee called the company's bias toward his election opponent Vice President Kamala Harris in online search results. Trump in a social media post wrote that if the Department of Justice does not prosecute Google "for this blatant interference of Elections" he would request its prosecution "when I win the election and become President of the United States!" He seemed to be reacting to a new study by the right-leaning Media Research Center, which purportedly found that Google search engine results tended to show news articles that supposedly were positive to the Democrat Harris ahead of Trump's own campaign website when a user searched for "Donald Trump presidential race 2024." In his post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "It has been determined that Google has illegally used a system of only revealing and displaying bad stories about Donald J. Trump, some made up for this purpose while, at the same time, only revealing good stories about Comrade Kamala Harris."

The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a crackdown on what the regulator called "deceptive AI claims and schemes" by three business opportunity ventures and two companies, including the legal services firm DoNotPay. The third count the judge tossed — numbered as Count 14 in the indictment — was criminal attempt to commit filing false documents. Lawyers for Caroline Ellison, the star witness in the prosecution of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, are recommending no prison time for their client’s role in the implosion of the crypto empire that was run by her former boss and ex-boyfriend. Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over Bankman-Fried’s case, cited Ellison’s testimony when he decided in March to sentence the FTX founder to 25 years behind bars. Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, agreed to a plea deal in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried forced Ellison into a sort-of isolation, culminating in her moral compass being “warped,” the lawyers say. Her former roommates and ex-FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, will be sentenced in October and November, respectively.
